ۿ۴ý Boys Tennis Team Crowned National Champions at 2023 Thailand School Cup

Our Seahawk varsity boys tennis players were in Minburi from Saturday to Monday, September 2-4, to vie for the title of national champion at the 2023 Thailand School Cup, sponsored by 100Plus and organized by Thai Tennis Magazine at the Game-Set-Match Tennis Center. Twelve of the country’s top boys teams were invited and seeded based on a criteria that included past performance, international (ITF) and national (LTAT) ranking of each team’s individual players. This year’s field included international schools, as well as Thai government schools and Thai private schools, seeded as follows: Seed 1 – ۿ۴ý; Seed 2 – Prasarnmit Demonstration School; Seed 3 – Khon Khaen University Demonstration School; Seed 4 – Panyapiwat Institute Of Management Demonstration School; Seed 5 – Assumption College Sriracha Campus; Seed 6 – Assumption College Thonburi Campus; Seed 7 – Triam Udom Suksa School; Seed 8 – Patumwan Demonstration School; Seed 9 – Ramkhamhaeng University Demonstration School; Seed 10 – St. Gabriel’s College; Seed 11 – Silpakorn University Demonstration School; and Seed 12 – Bangkok Patana School.

In pool play, Wells went undefeated, beating Assumption College Thonburi, St. Gabriel’s College and Ramkhamhaeng University Demonstration School, all by the same score of 3-0. In the semi-final match, Wells was paired against Patumwan Demonstration School who, despite a lower seed, made it out of pool play as the 4th-ranked team. However, Wells boys continued their dominance, with Penn Charusorn winning 2-0 (4-1,4-0) at 1st Singles, Riku Higash winning 2-0 (4-0,4-0) at 2nd Singles, and the pair of Kla Laosakulphan and Patrick Pattanalerthpan winning 2-0 (4-1,4-1) in doubles.

The championship matches were arguably the most challenging. However, true to form, our Seahawks wrapped up an undefeated tournament run, defeating 2nd-ranked Prasarnmit Demonstration School, 3-0. However, though Penn cruised to a 2-0 (4-0,4-0) win and Kla/Patrick also won 2-0 (4-1,4-1) in doubles, Riku did face a stiff challenge in the 2nd Singles match. However, he eventually pulled off the win at 2-0 (5-3,4-2).

After the dust settled, the final Thailand top-four school rankings for boys tennis teams were as follows:

1st Place – ۿ۴ý

2nd Place – Prasarnmit Demonstration School

3rd Place – Assumption College Sriracha Campus

4th Place – Patumwan Demonstration School

With Thai competition completed, our tennis players, boys and girls, will be preparing for higher level international competition at overseas venues throughout the school year.

Congratulations Seahawks!

As the country’s education systems strive to move forward in a post-pandemic world, Wells athletes have been waiting in eager anticipation for the return of inter-school competition. This week, our Seahawk Volleyball teams excitedly opened their 2022-2023 campaigns with matches scheduled against some very familiar rivals.

VARSITY SEASON OPENER AGAINST TRADITIONAL RIVAL ICS

On Thursday, September 8, both our boys and girls varsity volleyball teams took the “quick” drive to International Community School Bangkok (ICS) to start off their season. A young team with no senior leaders, our boys started out visibly nervous, dropping their first set to a much more confident ICS Eagles team. However, that early setback was enough to light a fire under everyone as the Seahawks dominated sets 2 and 3. After giving our novice players some game time in set 4 allowing ICS to tie it up at 2 sets apiece, our starting team put it away in the tiebreaker set to win the match at 3-2 (16-25, 25-16, 25-16, 23-25, 15-5).

Our varsity girls, also made up of mostly young players, showed clear improvement over previous years and pushed the much taller ICS team to a tiebreaker set as well. However, after a series of back-and-forth rallies, our Lady Seahawks came up just short, losing the tiebreaker, 15-17, and the match, 2-3.

JV TEAMS GO UNDEFEATED AGAINST POWERHOUSE SCHOOLS ISB AND NIST

On the very next day, Friday, September 9, it was our junior varsity volleyball teams opening their seasons at a tri-school meet hosted by ۿ۴ý (ISB) in Nonthaburi. Being very young with all players being Grade 9 and below, the teams entered the meet anxious and untested. However, after the dust settled, both teams came out victorious and, for now, undefeated.

On the boys side of the gym, our Seahawks had to come from behind in set 1 before dominating set 2, first winning against the ISB Panthers, 2-0 (25-21, 25-17). Their second match was very similar, starting slow and clawing their way back in set 1 before dominating in set 2, defeating the NIST International School Falcons, 2-0 (25-23, 25-16).

The girls matches were much closer with the Lady Seahawks prevailing in a tiebreaker to defeat host ISB, 2-1. And in the second match against NIST, our girls were down 21-23 in set 2 before surging at the end with 4 straight points to win the set 25-23, and the match, 2-0.

Seahawks win back-to-back-to-back championships at both ISB invitational and AISAA league tournaments

It’s been three years since the host Panthers from the ۿ۴ý (ISB) has won its own tournament, beating Wells in 2016 in the Seahawk’s debut in the championship match. Since then, Wells has reached AND won the championship match each year, against two different international schools from Singapore – United World College East (UWCE) in 2017 and Stamford American International School (SAIS) in 2018.

However, after ISB went undefeated in their pool, and earned a spot in the finals after a win against Bangkok Pattana School (BPS) in the semi-finals, urged on by a boisterous crowd screaming, “This is OUR house!” — the hungry Panthers were poised to reclaim the throne.

But our Seahawks would have NO SUCH THING!

With just one senior, the young Seahawks showed the mental maturity and emotional fortitude to stave off stiff challenges in pool play, beating ICS Bangkok, 2-0 (25-20, 25-10); SAIS, 2-1 (25-13, 24-26, 17-15); and BPS, 2-1 (23-25, 25-18, 15-11). They then survived a tough semi-final match-up against another Singapore school, United World College Dover (UWCD), beating them 2-1 (18-25, 25-23, 15-13).

In the end, Wells had just a bit more energy, a bit more depth on the bench, and a bit more heart to outlast ISB, winning 2-0 (26-24, 27-25) in two nail-biting, overtime sets, to complete the “three-peat” championship run.

The Seahawks were led by tri-captains Insee Akarapan (c/o 2020), Corey Beer (c/o 2021), and Perth Vichitchoti (c/o 2021). Other members of the squad include Pat Pinsrisirirath, Kohyo Miyajima, Ronnie Kwok, Justin Omland, and Phurin Kosumapinun (c/o 2021); and MJ Caunan, Jr., Kendrick Acda, Herb Udompholvanich, Gabriel Xumsai Na Ayudhaya, Shiva Chandnani, and Time Phatigulsate (c/o 2022). Head Coach – Ray de la Pena and Asst. Coach – Rhyll Catangcatang.

AISAA Champions

In the second tournament, held all day Sunday, a condensed version of the varsity boys squad took on other AISAA teams, as well as a few visiting teams. Pool play turned out to be a cakewalk as Wells easily beat Berkeley International School, 2-0 (25-22, 25-12); King Mongkut International Demonstration School (KMIDS), 2-0 (25-9, 25-10); KIS, 2-0 (25-16, 25-23); and the International School of the Eastern Seaboard (ISE), 2-0 (25-17, 25-14). In the knock-out matches, Wells beat Ekamai International School (EIS), 2-0 (25-12, 25-14) and, finally, KIS, 2-0 (25-14, 25-9) to repeat as champions. Wells also won the AISAA Tournament championships in 2017 and 2018.

Lady Seahawks also in action over weekend

Also, playing in the tournaments were the Wells varsity girls who played hard and showed much improvement since the beginning of the season. In pool play of the ISB tournament, the Lady Seahawks won two matches; first to ICS Bangkok, 2-1; then International School of Ho Chi Minh City (ISHCMC) from Vietnam. The girls ended the tournament in 4th place.

At the AISAA tournament, the girls went 3-1 in pool play, but fell in the semi-finals to Concordian. The girls ended in 3rd place.

Both teams now have over a month to prepare for their final tournaments of the season against member schools of the ASEAN Schools Athletic Conference (ASAC), coming up at the beginning in November.

2018 Panther Invitational – 9
Back-to-back champions at the ISB Panther Invitational.

In yet another role as David, Wells varsity boys volleyball team faced another Goliath international schools, and, for the second year in a row, our Seahawks came out victorious, going undefeated after beating Stamford American International School (SAIS) from Singapore in the championship match of the ۿ۴ý (ISB) Panther Invitational Volleyball Tournament held this past weekend.

The tournament, which ran over two days, featured international schools from Thailand and other Southeast Asia countries including Singapore and Vietnam.

On Friday, pool play began with wins against International Community School Bangkok, 2-0 (25-22, 25-15) and United World College Dover from Singapore, 2-0 (25-10, 25-18). The winning streak continued on Saturday against Saigon South International School from Vietnam, 2-0 (25-22, 25-12) putting us in 1st place in Pool A.

For the semi-finals, our boys faced host ISB, who placed 2nd in Pool B, winning 2-0 (25-21, 25-22), including a dramatic come-from-behind win in set 2.

Finally, the championship match turned out to be the most challenging with both Wells and SAIS going undefeated through their respective semi-final matches. However, after splitting the first two sets, the Seahawks proved too much for the Lions, cruising to a win in the tie-breaker for the championship trophy, 2-1 (25-21, 18-25, 15-5).

In the second tournament, held all day Sunday, a condensed version of the varsity boys squad took on other AISAA league teams, as well as visiting teams from Chonburi and Cambodia. Pool play turned out to be a cakewalk as Wells easily beat AISAA teams from Berkeley International School, 2-0 (25-10, 25-9) and Mahidol University International Demonstration School (MUIDS), 2-0 (25-5, 25-5), followed by a win against the International School of the Eastern Seaboard (ISE), 2-0 (25-23, 25-7). In the knock-out matches, Wells beat Logos International School from Cambodia, 2-0 (25-8, 25-15) and, finally, Ekamai International School, 2-0 (25-7, 25-19) to repeat as champions.

Also, playing in the tournaments were the Wells varsity girls who played hard, winning two matches, both against International School Ho Chi Minh City (ISHCMC), to place 7th at the ISB tournament. At the AISAA tournament, the girls went undefeated in pool play, but fell in the semi-finals to the eventual champions from Logos International School. The girls ended in 3rd place with a win against East-West International School from Cambodia.

Both teams continue the season with two more major tournaments, one in Malaysia and one in Vietnam, coming up through November.

In the inaugural AISAA Open Tennis Tournament, the Wells tennis program dominated the field to capture both the individual and team titles. Eventual champion Phuwish Lee “Bank” (Gr. 10) cruised through the play-in round and quarterfinals, blanking “Charles”, 8-0, and Hugo Abe, 8-0, both from Berkeley International School (BIS). In the semifinals, Bank lost his only game of the tournament, but still overpowered Thanapat “Putter” Boosarawongse from Concordian International School (CIS), 8-1. In a rather anti-climactic finish, the championship match pit Wells top player against his seemingly strongest opponent, Thanakorn “Jark” Runglerdkriangkrai from Ekamai International School (EIS), who eked by Wells #2 player, Possawat Akarapan “Insee” (Gr. 10), in the other semifinal match, 8-7 (10-7). However, due to injury, the EIS challenger needed to bow out.
Aside from Bank and Insee, Wells players making the tournament’s main draw included Bank’s twin, Best Warisara Lee “Best” (Gr. 10) and Seahawk newcomer Jao Van Schalkwyk (Gr. 7). Best fell to Jark from EIS, 8-3, and Jao fell in a tight match against Putter from CIS, 8-6.
In the team standings, Wells accumulated 22 team points, followed by Ekamai with 7 team points, Concordian with 4 team points, Berkeley with 1 team point. Also participating were players from AISAA member Mahidol University International Demonstration School – MUIDS (MUIDS).
The season continues next weekend with Wells players entered in a UTR-sanctioned tournament held at Bangkok Pattana School.

The varsity volleyball season came to a close this past week with Wells teams ending on a very positive note with both girls and boys winning their respective AISAA varsity volleyball championship tournaments.

VARSITY GIRLS WIN AISAA VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP

In the inaugural girls volleyball tournament of the Asia Interscholastic Athletic Association (AISAA), the Wells varsity girls volleyball team came up on top in a field of seven schools, bringing home the school’s first girls championship trophy of the year.

In pool play, Wells came out strong, cruising to victories over fellow AISAA members Berkeley, 2-0 (25-7, 25-9), and Mahidol, 2-0 (25-8, 25-8). Their toughest competition in their pool was visiting Logos International School from Cambodia, also winning in straight sets, 2-0 (25-10, 27-25).

Entering the play-offs with momentum and confidence on their side, our Lady Seahawks stormed through the brackets, beating AISAA members Ekamai in the quarter-final match, 2-0 (25-13, 25-15) and Concordian in the semi-final match, 2-0 (25-14, 25-19).

In the championship game, Wells faced another team from Cambodia, East West International School (EWIC). Though clearly deserving to be in the finals, EWIC couldn’t match the confidence and consistent play of our girls as Wells won in straight sets, 2-0 (25-20, 25-22).

VARSITY BOYS WIN FINAL TOURNAMENT OF VOLLEYBALL SEASON

Wells varsity boys team capped off the most successful season in the program’s 7-year history with its fourth championship trophy, winning the inaugural AISAA Boys Varsity Volleyball Tournament on Thursday, October 19. With the wins, the Seahawks ended the season with a 26-1 record, with a single loss coming against an adult team at the ISKL Twin Towers Invitational in Malaysia.

The eight-team tournament was also the largest tournament ever hosted by Wells with five AISAA teams and three visiting teams from around the region.

In pool play, Wells came out strong, with victories over visiting Logos International School (Cambodia), 2-0 (25-9, 25-10), followed by straight-set wins against fellow AISAA members Mahidol University International College, 2-0 (25-12, 15-10), and Ekamai International School, 2-0 (25-17, 25-7).

As the winner of the pool, our boys earned a spot in the semi-finals of the championship bracket, facing the Eagles, an up-and-coming program from Bangkok Advent School. Despite a strong, scrappy defense, the eagles were no match for Wells power offense as the Seahawks prevailed, 2-0 (25-16, 25-7).

In the championship game, Wells had a chance to reassert its dominance with a rematch against Ekamai, the third meeting between the two teams in a little over a week. Despite the long day, the outcome was no different with Wells winning the championship, 2-0 (25-15, 25-11).

Other schools participating in the tournament included fellow AISAA schools Concordian International School and Berkeley International School (Bangkok, Thailand), as well as another visiting school, International School Eastern Seaboard, Pattaya, Chonburi (ISE) from Chonburi.

The varsity boys volleyball team came just short of winning their fourth consecutive tournament title, falling to an adult league volleyball club, LAYDVC, in the championship game of the Twin Towers Invitational Volleyball Tournament. The tournament, hosted by the in Malaysia, was the first overseas tournament ever for the young Seahawks.

In pool play, Wells went undefeated, beating the Eagles of from Penang, 2-0 (25-19, 25-9), the host Panthers of ISKL, 2-1 (20-25, 25-20, 15-10), and LAYDVC, 2-0 (26-25, 25-15).

In the championship game, pitting the #1 and #2 pool teams against each other, the adult team came out strong, cruising to a win in the first set, 20-25. Not giving up, the younger Seahawks stormed back in the second set, winning easily, 25-13. However, experience proved to be the winning edge in the tiebreaker set, with the adult team winning a tight, seesaw battle, 15-13, for the championship.

Despite the loss and an overall record of 17-1, Wells boys remain undefeated against other international schools with a record of 16-0. To date, our wins were against teams from across the country (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chonburi) and Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Singapore, and Malaysia).

JUNIOR VARSITY “A” TEAM WIN IN EXHIBITION GAMES

Also in action in Kuala Lumpur were the younger members of the varsity team, aka Wells Junior Varsity “A” team. Facing a much taller ISKL JV team, our Jr. Seahawks were not intimidated, winning a best-of-5 match, 3-1 (25-18, 25-21, 19-25, 25-16). In day 2, our boys played the Dalat team, winning 2-1 (25-17, 22-25, 15-11). However, on a day 3 rematch, Wells fell to Dalat, 1-2 (25-23, 16-25, 12-15).

MAHALO!

Huge thanks go out to our hosts at International School of Kuala Lumpur, especially Athletic Director Mr. Ryan Naughton who organized the tournament and arranged our ground transportation while we were in Malaysia. Also, thanks go out to Mr. Wai Tak (Willie) Kwok for arranging our airport to hotel transfer when we arrived in Kuala Lumpur.

UPCOMING TOURNAMENTS

Both our boys and girls will be playing in the AISAA League Championship Tournaments will be held in mid-October with the girls playing at Concordian International School on October 20, and the boys at Wells on October 19.

The varsity boys volleyball made it a clean sweep, winning the big one: the two-day, 8-team ISB Invitational Volleyball Tournament held this weekend.

In pool play, Wells immediately faced host ISB, winning in split sets, 2-1 (16-25, 25-21, 15-12). After easily putting away NIST, 2-0 (25-12, 25-10), our boys clinched the top seed in pool play by beating Saigon South International School from Vietnam, 2-1 (21-25, 25-15, 15-6). In the semi-finals, Wells faced the top volleyball team in Northern Thailand, Grace International School Chiang Mai. After being pushed to the limit in game one, the boys were able to put it away in two games, winning 2-0 (27-25, 25-20).

In the championship game, our Seahawks faced the big boys from United World College East (UWCE) in Singapore, winners of their pool, in a battle of two undefeated teams. In two very tight games, Wells was able to avoid a tie-breaker set, winning 2-0 (27-26, 25-20) to clinch the championship.

With this championship, along with the Ruamrudee Phoenix Invitational in early September, and the NIST Invitational last weekend, the Seahawks achieved a rare “Triple Crown”, winning all three of the major Bangkok international school tournaments this year.

VARSITY GIRLS WIN THIRD PLACE

Also in action on this weekend at the ISB tournament were the girls, hoping to ride on the momentum following their bronze-medal performance at NIST last weekend.

In the first day, the Lady Seahawks came out strong, going undefeated with impressive wins against two foreign schools, beating International School of Ho Chi Minh from Vietnam, 2-0, and UWCE from Singapore, 2-0. However, our girls played two tough matches in a row against the big BISAC schools, losing to NIST, 2-0, in the final game of pool play, and host ISB, 2-0, in the semi-final match of the championship bracket.

In the bronze-medal match, Wells faced the Eagles from International Community School (ICS) who they lost to earlier in the first match of the season. However, clearly a new and improved team, the girls easily dismantled the Lady Eagles in straight sets, 2-0, to bring home their second trophy in as many weeks.

UPCOMING TOURNAMENTS

The boys will also be traveling to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to play in the Twin Towers Classic from October 5-7. Finally, the AISAA League Championship Tournaments will be held in mid-October with the girls playing at Concordian International School on October 20, and the boys at Wells on October 19.

In their second major tournament of the still young season, the varsity boys volleyball team once again faced the big boys from BISAC and across the region, this time at the NIST International School Falcon Invitational Tournament on Saturday.

In pool play, Wells came out strong, beating UNIS-Hanoi from Vietnam, 2-0 (25-15, 25-10). With little time to catch their breaths, the boys were then pushed to a tiebreak set against heavy-hitting Bangkok Pattana, but still came up on top 2-1 (25-19, 17-25, 15-10) to win the pool and the right to play for the championship.

In the championship game, our Seahawks faced host NIST, winners of their pool, in a battle of two undefeated teams. The boys were a bit rattled by a raucous home crowd, falling far behind in the first set, before clawing back but eventually falling 22-25. With momentum on their side, Wells cruised through the second set, easily winning 25-13. However, the tiebreaker set was a seesaw battle with our boys finding themselves behind 20-22. With one final push and a key series of monster blocks by sophomore MB Pew Apithanangsiri (#4), our boys powered past the home team, appropriately clinching it with a big assist-kill combo by co-captains Insee Akarapan (#9) and Sean Ogden (#15) to end the game at 25-23 and the match at 2-1.

With the NIST championship trophy and the recent RIS championship trophy, Wells completes a 2-week sweep over the top four BISAC schools: ISB, Ruamrudee, Bangkok Pattana, and NIST.

VARSITY GIRLS WIN FIRST TROPHY OF THE SEASON

Also in action on Saturday at the NIST tournament were the girls. Picking up their first win of the season earlier in the week, the Lady Seahawks were anxious to prove to themselves that they can be a force to contend with.

Facing eventual girls champions Ruamrudee (RIS) in their first game, Wells fell quickly 2-0. However, our girls regrouped and were able to pull off a win against UNIS-Hanoi 2-0 to earn the right to play against Harrow ۿ۴ý (HIS), the second place team from Pool B. In their final match of the tournament, the girls pulled together to beat their first BISAC school of the year, 2-0, to earn themselves bronze medals and the 3rd place trophy.

UPCOMING TOURNAMENTS

Both boys and girls varsity teams will be preparing for several tournaments featuring schools from all around Southeast Asia. The BIG one is up next — the 16-team ISB Panther Invitational on Friday and Saturday, September 29-30. We would LOVE for parents and students to come and watch our Wells teams in action on either day. With a total of 32 teams in both volleyball and football, it is a carnival atmosphere with non-stop sports action at ISB’s massive sports complex.

The boys will also be traveling to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to play in the Twin Towers Classic from October 5-7. Finally, the AISAA League Championship Tournaments will be held in mid-October with the girls playing at Concordian International School and the boys at Wells.
