In response to the growing interest in STEAM education, Bangna Campus is proud to incorporate basic robotics using LEGO® WeDo 2.0 in the curriculum for Grade 1 and Grade 2 students. This move will provide our young students with fundamental skills in critical thinking, creativity, and practical insights into technology-characteristics that are so vital in today’s swiftly evolving environment.

Why STEAM and Robotics?

STEAM education globally encourages the integration of these disciplines in education to better equip students with the challenges they will face. In particular, robotics enhances problem-solving, collaboration, and innovation-skills that are increasingly in high demand in the contemporary labor market. By using LEGO® WeDo 2.0 in Grades 1 and 2, we are introducing students at an early age to the opportunity of exploring and experimenting with technology in an appealing and age-appropriate manner.

About LEGO® WeDo 2.0

The LEGO WeDo 2.0 is an award-winning robotics platform for elementary education, which introduces students to the basics of coding and engineering. Using simple drag-and-drop programming along with sensors, motors, and LEGO bricks, students are empowered to build and program a robot to interact with its environment. This activity-based teaching aid is aimed explicitly at sparking curiosity so that students will explore real-life issues and develop creative solutions.

Preparing for the future

The integration of LEGO® WeDo 2.0 fundamental robotics in Grades 1 and 2 forms part of our progressive strides in preparing our students for the future. We are proud that Bangna campus is leading the way with this integration into the curriculum in the field of STEAM education, and consequently giving our students everything they need to navigate life through in a technologically driven world.

By promoting creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking, this program enhances students’ comprehension of robotics while laying a solid foundation for lifelong learning and innovation. Our commitment to STEAM education, further empowered by the integration of robotics within formative years, ensures that we will be on the frontline in the pursuit of excellence in education.

Wells Bang Na recently hosted its first in-person PYP Exhibition, an event that highlights the creativity, critical thinking, and collaborative efforts of the Grade 5 students. This exhibition is the culminating event of the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and a chance for the entire school community to celebrate the year-long inquiries that the students have explored.

The theme that Grade 5 chose for this year’s exhibition was “Change the World, Save the World,” reflecting the students’ dedication to making a positive impact on the planet. Each group of students chose their own global issue and found ways to take action in the community. The themes this year included gender equality, sustainable and responsible energy use, and protecting marine ecosystems.

Throughout the course of these extended projects, students undertook research that included speaking to experts in their respective fields. Groups were fortunate enough to speak to oceanographers from around the world, the Maltese commissioner for gender equality, and one group even had a video interview with a U.S Senator!

The resulting actions included a successful family fitness event at Nong Bon Park, a resource pack to support teaching in Grade 3, a YouTube channel, and collecting pledges from visitors. Each group also wrote letters to decision-makers in Thailand and abroad to encourage change on a national and international scale.

During the exhibition week, students displayed their research and action projects, alongside interactive elements, artworks and creative performances. The students also presented elements in Thai and Mandarin, highlighting the importance of multilingualism in the PYP programme.

The event was well attended by students from different Wells campuses, as well as visitors from D-Prep International School. The students received wonderful feedback about the dedication, passion and skills they demonstrated. We are all incredibly proud of these Grade 5 students and wish them every success as they continue their academic journey.

A Conversation with Granddad

In today’s fast-paced world, we often overlook the valuable knowledge that older generations hold. Recently, our 3rd-grade class had a special opportunity to learn about a significant time in American history – segregation. This unique chance came about thanks to one of our students’ granddad, who lived through those challenging times and kindly shared his experiences and wisdom with us.

As Granddad walked into our classroom, we could feel the excitement and curiosity in the air. For most of us, segregation was something we only knew from history books or documentaries. But here was a real connection to that period, a person who had lived through it and was eager to tell his story.

When different generations share their ideas and information, it’s a powerful way to learn and grow. Granddad made the history of segregation come alive by sharing personal stories. He talked about the difficulties, discrimination, and the strength that helped people during those tough times. Listening to him, we realized that history is not just about facts and dates; it’s about the experiences and feelings of real people.

This encounter also showed us the importance of talking to people who were directly involved in historical events. Granddad didn’t just watch history happen; he was a part of it. His firsthand accounts gave us insights that textbooks or documentaries couldn’t provide. We could ask questions, seek clarification, and have a real conversation that made history more understandable. Granddad also stressed the importance of using peaceful methods to change people’s perspectives.

These conversations between generations are very important. In today’s fast-paced world, where information is easy to access, we sometimes forget the wisdom and experiences our elders have. By talking to them, we can learn about our history, heritage, and the challenges and successes that have shaped our society.

Granddad’s stories fit well with our ongoing study of different perspectives from the past. His personal experiences during the era of segregation gave us a unique view into that time, helping us understand the emotions, challenges, and triumphs of those who lived through it. This conversation taught us not only about historical events but also about the human side of history – the dreams, fears, and goals of individuals who influenced the world we live in today. It reminded us of the importance of considering different viewpoints when studying history, which helps us understand the past with more empathy and depth.

As we said goodbye to Granddad, we felt grateful for the chance to connect with the past and learn from someone who had experienced it firsthand. We left our classroom that day with a newfound appreciation for the power of sharing ideas across generations, understanding that we must cherish and preserve these connections to ensure that the lessons of history are never forgotten.
