Our Seahawk volleyball teams have once again showcased remarkable skill and team spirit at the prestigious 2023 FOBISIA Varsity Volleyball Tournament, hosted by Shrewsbury International School this past weekend. This marks the second consecutive year of Wells’ participation in this 3-day event.

The Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA) tournament brought together teams from across the region.

**Seahawk Boys: A Dominating Force**

Wells’ boys’ volleyball team, known for its prowess, continued its winning streak. They remained undefeated in pool play, overpowering teams from Bangkok Prep, Rugby School Thailand, Epsom College, and Shrewsbury Team B. The knockout phase saw them triumph over Wellington College Shanghai and Potisarn Pittayakorn in the semifinals. The championship match against Bangkok Prep was arguably the best-played match of the season, with Wells clinching the gold medal, winning 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-14).

The boys’ team featured a blend of experience and emerging talent. Ending their storied careers as Seahawks were seniors Sena Nakamura, Asahi Fukuura, Bijay Pun, Japan Kittayachaiyawat, Kenshin Ushikubo, and Haruto Kagei. They were supported by juniors Rafael Jung and Rishi Sharma.

**Lady Seahawks: An Emerging Powerhouse**

The girls’ team, significantly improving since their 6th place finish at the ISB tournament, mirrored the boys’ success in pool play, securing victories against Shrewsbury Team B, Potisarn Pittayakorn, and Bangkok Prep. They continued their winning form in the playoffs, overcoming Shrewsbury Team A and International School Myanmar in the semifinals. The championship game saw them put up a fierce fight against St. Andrew’s Bangkok, eventually earning a respectable second place.

The girls’ roster showcased a diverse mix of players, including senior Bianca Castillo; juniors Ally Gu, Jimin An, and Preme Mongkolprasert; sophomores Alia Abdelwahab, An Fukuura, Alisa Kupari, Hayeon Kim, Yebin Sung; and freshmen Aom Vetchayanvivat, Hrishika Bhattacharya, and Amy Park.

The varsity volleyball season came to a close this past week with Wells teams ending on a very positive note with both girls and boys winning their respective AISAA varsity volleyball championship tournaments.

VARSITY GIRLS WIN AISAA VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP

In the inaugural girls volleyball tournament of the Asia Interscholastic Athletic Association (AISAA), the Wells varsity girls volleyball team came up on top in a field of seven schools, bringing home the school’s first girls championship trophy of the year.

In pool play, Wells came out strong, cruising to victories over fellow AISAA members Berkeley, 2-0 (25-7, 25-9), and Mahidol, 2-0 (25-8, 25-8). Their toughest competition in their pool was visiting Logos International School from Cambodia, also winning in straight sets, 2-0 (25-10, 27-25).

Entering the play-offs with momentum and confidence on their side, our Lady Seahawks stormed through the brackets, beating AISAA members Ekamai in the quarter-final match, 2-0 (25-13, 25-15) and Concordian in the semi-final match, 2-0 (25-14, 25-19).

In the championship game, Wells faced another team from Cambodia, East West International School (EWIC). Though clearly deserving to be in the finals, EWIC couldn’t match the confidence and consistent play of our girls as Wells won in straight sets, 2-0 (25-20, 25-22).

VARSITY BOYS WIN FINAL TOURNAMENT OF VOLLEYBALL SEASON

Wells varsity boys team capped off the most successful season in the program’s 7-year history with its fourth championship trophy, winning the inaugural AISAA Boys Varsity Volleyball Tournament on Thursday, October 19. With the wins, the Seahawks ended the season with a 26-1 record, with a single loss coming against an adult team at the ISKL Twin Towers Invitational in Malaysia.

The eight-team tournament was also the largest tournament ever hosted by Wells with five AISAA teams and three visiting teams from around the region.

In pool play, Wells came out strong, with victories over visiting Logos International School (Cambodia), 2-0 (25-9, 25-10), followed by straight-set wins against fellow AISAA members Mahidol University International College, 2-0 (25-12, 15-10), and Ekamai International School, 2-0 (25-17, 25-7).

As the winner of the pool, our boys earned a spot in the semi-finals of the championship bracket, facing the Eagles, an up-and-coming program from Bangkok Advent School. Despite a strong, scrappy defense, the eagles were no match for Wells power offense as the Seahawks prevailed, 2-0 (25-16, 25-7).

In the championship game, Wells had a chance to reassert its dominance with a rematch against Ekamai, the third meeting between the two teams in a little over a week. Despite the long day, the outcome was no different with Wells winning the championship, 2-0 (25-15, 25-11).

Other schools participating in the tournament included fellow AISAA schools Concordian International School and Berkeley International School (Bangkok, Thailand), as well as another visiting school, International School Eastern Seaboard, Pattaya, Chonburi (ISE) from Chonburi.

Along with volleyball matches, the tournament allowed us to recognize two of our programs graduating seniors who played their final games with the team: Matter Kwanlertchit and Ping Ping Praepant (Ping Ping Liu).

Also representing Wells were Juniors, Sean Ogden, Finn Dardarananda, Ryosuke Toda, Yuta Nishio, Jira Trinetkamol, and Sunand Sethi; Sophomores, Possawat Akarapan and Pew Apithanangsiri; Freshman, Perth Vichitchoti; and coach, Ray de la Pena.

The varsity boys volleyball team came just short of winning their fourth consecutive tournament title, falling to an adult league volleyball club, LAYDVC, in the championship game of the Twin Towers Invitational Volleyball Tournament. The tournament, hosted by the in Malaysia, was the first overseas tournament ever for the young Seahawks.

In pool play, Wells went undefeated, beating the Eagles of from Penang, 2-0 (25-19, 25-9), the host Panthers of ISKL, 2-1 (20-25, 25-20, 15-10), and LAYDVC, 2-0 (26-25, 25-15).

In the championship game, pitting the #1 and #2 pool teams against each other, the adult team came out strong, cruising to a win in the first set, 20-25. Not giving up, the younger Seahawks stormed back in the second set, winning easily, 25-13. However, experience proved to be the winning edge in the tiebreaker set, with the adult team winning a tight, seesaw battle, 15-13, for the championship.

Despite the loss and an overall record of 17-1, Wells boys remain undefeated against other international schools with a record of 16-0. To date, our wins were against teams from across the country (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chonburi) and Southeast Asia (Vietnam, Singapore, and Malaysia).

JUNIOR VARSITY “A” TEAM WIN IN EXHIBITION GAMES

Also in action in Kuala Lumpur were the younger members of the varsity team, aka Wells Junior Varsity “A” team. Facing a much taller ISKL JV team, our Jr. Seahawks were not intimidated, winning a best-of-5 match, 3-1 (25-18, 25-21, 19-25, 25-16). In day 2, our boys played the Dalat team, winning 2-1 (25-17, 22-25, 15-11). However, on a day 3 rematch, Wells fell to Dalat, 1-2 (25-23, 16-25, 12-15).

MAHALO!

Huge thanks go out to our hosts at International School of Kuala Lumpur, especially Athletic Director Mr. Ryan Naughton who organized the tournament and arranged our ground transportation while we were in Malaysia. Also, thanks go out to Mr. Wai Tak (Willie) Kwok for arranging our airport to hotel transfer when we arrived in Kuala Lumpur.

UPCOMING TOURNAMENTS

Both our boys and girls will be playing in the AISAA League Championship Tournaments will be held in mid-October with the girls playing at Concordian International School on October 20, and the boys at Wells on October 19.

The varsity boys volleyball made it a clean sweep, winning the big one: the two-day, 8-team ISB Invitational Volleyball Tournament held this weekend.

In pool play, Wells immediately faced host ISB, winning in split sets, 2-1 (16-25, 25-21, 15-12). After easily putting away NIST, 2-0 (25-12, 25-10), our boys clinched the top seed in pool play by beating Saigon South International School from Vietnam, 2-1 (21-25, 25-15, 15-6). In the semi-finals, Wells faced the top volleyball team in Northern Thailand, Grace International School Chiang Mai. After being pushed to the limit in game one, the boys were able to put it away in two games, winning 2-0 (27-25, 25-20).

In the championship game, our Seahawks faced the big boys from United World College East (UWCE) in Singapore, winners of their pool, in a battle of two undefeated teams. In two very tight games, Wells was able to avoid a tie-breaker set, winning 2-0 (27-26, 25-20) to clinch the championship.

With this championship, along with the Ruamrudee Phoenix Invitational in early September, and the NIST Invitational last weekend, the Seahawks achieved a rare “Triple Crown”, winning all three of the major Bangkok international school tournaments this year.

VARSITY GIRLS WIN THIRD PLACE

Also in action on this weekend at the ISB tournament were the girls, hoping to ride on the momentum following their bronze-medal performance at NIST last weekend.

In the first day, the Lady Seahawks came out strong, going undefeated with impressive wins against two foreign schools, beating International School of Ho Chi Minh from Vietnam, 2-0, and UWCE from Singapore, 2-0. However, our girls played two tough matches in a row against the big BISAC schools, losing to NIST, 2-0, in the final game of pool play, and host ISB, 2-0, in the semi-final match of the championship bracket.

In the bronze-medal match, Wells faced the Eagles from International Community School (ICS) who they lost to earlier in the first match of the season. However, clearly a new and improved team, the girls easily dismantled the Lady Eagles in straight sets, 2-0, to bring home their second trophy in as many weeks.

UPCOMING TOURNAMENTS

The boys will also be traveling to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to play in the Twin Towers Classic from October 5-7. Finally, the AISAA League Championship Tournaments will be held in mid-October with the girls playing at Concordian International School on October 20, and the boys at Wells on October 19.

In their second major tournament of the still young season, the varsity boys volleyball team once again faced the big boys from BISAC and across the region, this time at the NIST International School Falcon Invitational Tournament on Saturday.

In pool play, Wells came out strong, beating UNIS-Hanoi from Vietnam, 2-0 (25-15, 25-10). With little time to catch their breaths, the boys were then pushed to a tiebreak set against heavy-hitting Bangkok Pattana, but still came up on top 2-1 (25-19, 17-25, 15-10) to win the pool and the right to play for the championship.

In the championship game, our Seahawks faced host NIST, winners of their pool, in a battle of two undefeated teams. The boys were a bit rattled by a raucous home crowd, falling far behind in the first set, before clawing back but eventually falling 22-25. With momentum on their side, Wells cruised through the second set, easily winning 25-13. However, the tiebreaker set was a seesaw battle with our boys finding themselves behind 20-22. With one final push and a key series of monster blocks by sophomore MB Pew Apithanangsiri (#4), our boys powered past the home team, appropriately clinching it with a big assist-kill combo by co-captains Insee Akarapan (#9) and Sean Ogden (#15) to end the game at 25-23 and the match at 2-1.

With the NIST championship trophy and the recent RIS championship trophy, Wells completes a 2-week sweep over the top four BISAC schools: ISB, Ruamrudee, Bangkok Pattana, and NIST.

VARSITY GIRLS WIN FIRST TROPHY OF THE SEASON

Also in action on Saturday at the NIST tournament were the girls. Picking up their first win of the season earlier in the week, the Lady Seahawks were anxious to prove to themselves that they can be a force to contend with.

Facing eventual girls champions Ruamrudee (RIS) in their first game, Wells fell quickly 2-0. However, our girls regrouped and were able to pull off a win against UNIS-Hanoi 2-0 to earn the right to play against Harrow ۿ۴ý (HIS), the second place team from Pool B. In their final match of the tournament, the girls pulled together to beat their first BISAC school of the year, 2-0, to earn themselves bronze medals and the 3rd place trophy.

UPCOMING TOURNAMENTS

Both boys and girls varsity teams will be preparing for several tournaments featuring schools from all around Southeast Asia. The BIG one is up next — the 16-team ISB Panther Invitational on Friday and Saturday, September 29-30. We would LOVE for parents and students to come and watch our Wells teams in action on either day. With a total of 32 teams in both volleyball and football, it is a carnival atmosphere with non-stop sports action at ISB’s massive sports complex.

The boys will also be traveling to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to play in the Twin Towers Classic from October 5-7. Finally, the AISAA League Championship Tournaments will be held in mid-October with the girls playing at Concordian International School and the boys at Wells.

Ekamai – For the second time this month, the Wells girls volleyball program challenged the bigger schools of BISAC, facing Ruamrudee, Harrow, and host EIS at the 2012 Ekamai International School Varsity Girls Volleyball Invitational Tournament on Sunday. Coming off a gold medal performance by the junior varsity team just two weeks prior, a very young varsity team nearly accomplished the improbable. The Lady Seahawks powered their way through pool play, defeating Ekamai Varsity 2-0 (25-12, 25-23), Ekamai JV 2-1 (25-23, 17-25, 15-12), and Ruamrudee 2-0 (25-23, 25-23), but dropping a match against Harrow 0-2 (20-25, 16-25). Nonetheless, based on winning records and head-to-head tiebreakers, Wells ended up at the top after pool play, earning them a spot in the championship match against pool-play runner-up Ruamrudee.

In the championship game, however, the Seahawks’ youth and inexperience became apparent as the confident and experienced Phoenix from Ruamrudee took advantage of nervous miscues and free balls to win in straight sets, 2-0 (25-19, 25-22), giving RIS the gold and leaving Wells with the silver.

With the Lady Seahawk varsity team made up largely of members of the under 15 and junior varsity teams, the future is certainly looking bright for Wells’ volleyball program. A member of TISAC, the Seahawks have been competing regularly with the larger schools outside of the conference, as no other team in TISAC currently has a formal volleyball program. The school hopes to change this as it plans to host, on a trial basis, the first TISAC volleyball tournament later in the school year.

Bang Na – The Seahawk Volleyball Program took a giant leap forward in earning the respect of Bangkok’s premiere international school athletic programs, garnering a rare championship sweep at the 2012 Bangkok Patana U17 Volleyball Invitational this weekend. Both the boys and girls teams brought home the gold, despite representing the smallest school in a tournament field that included some of the top schools in Bangkok, including host school Bangkok Patana, ۿ۴ý, Ruamrudee International School, International Community School, NIST, and the American School of Bangkok.

In the boys tourney, Wells had an early start, facing NIST in their first match. Starting out strong, the Seahawks were able to withstand several Falcon surges to win in straight sets, 2-0 (25-22, 25-18). The Seahawks were able to carry their intensity through to the second match, soundly defeating the Phoenix from Ruamrudee, 2-0 (25-16, 25-16), and securing a berth in the play-offs.

In the semi-finals, the boys faced their toughest challenge to that point, facing the Panthers of ISB. After a series of lead changes in game 1, the game was tied at 23-23 before Wells was able to pull away to win by two, 25-23. With that close game serving as a wake-up call, the Seahawks roared back to life, taking game two 25-13, and earning a spot in the championship game against NIST who defeated ICS, 2-0, in the other semi-final match up.

Having already defeated NIST in pool play, Wells had the confidence needed to build an insurmountable lead early in game 1 of the championship match, leading to a lopsided 25-10 win for the Seahawks. However, the Falcons refused to give up, putting up a fight in game two to make it a bit closer. Nonetheless, the hunger for their first championship was much too strong as the Seahawks held on for a 25-21 win, earning gold for the school’s volleyball program for the first time in its short history.

Not to be upstaged by the boys, the Lady Seahawks were also able to make it to the play-offs with a big win over Bangkok Patana, 2-0 (25-12, 25-8), and a split-set win over NIST, 2-1 (25-18, 21-25, 17-15).

However, the girls had a much tougher road ahead of them. In the semi-finals, Wells found itself backed against the wall as the Lady Panthers of ISB took charge of the match at the onset, winning game 1 easily 25-18. However, the Lady Seahawks refused to submit, dominating the second game 25-11 and moving on the finals with a win in the tie-breaker, 15-12.

As in the semi-final match, Wells put themselves in a hole in the finals, dropping game 1 to NIST, 22-25, and falling behind early in game 2. However, with the sideline urging them on, the girls stormed back to steal game two, 25-22. With everything on the line, both teams traded points with the lead see-sawing back and forth for most of the game. However, a late run of strong serving allowed the Seahawks to prevail, giving Wells a sweep of the tourney championships.

A member of TISAC, Wells Seahawks has been competing regularly with the larger schools as no other team in the conference currently has a formal volleyball program. The school hopes to change this as it plans to host, on a trial basis, the first TISAC volleyball tournament later in the school year. More photos of the tournament can be viewed on our .

Wells Seahawks with hall-of-fame coach Dave Shoji

Hawaii, USA – Four Wells Seahawks and their coaches participated in eight days of intensive training with world-class players and university coaches at the University of Hawaii’s summer volleyball program held in Honolulu in early July. Along with their coaches Mr. Antonio Boff and Mr. Ray de la Peña, Varsity/JV Girls Volleyball captain Marin Takahashi, Varsity/JV Boys co-captains Bo-An Shang Kuan and Kevin Han, and Under-15 Boys captain Peter Choi traveled on a journey few people can even imagine, let alone experience firsthand.

The adventure began with a three-day tour of the island of Kauai to visit Mr. Ray’s childhood home and to get a taste of what it’s like to grow up in paradise. Highlights of this side trip included kayaking up a serene tropical river, snorkeling with giant green sea turtles, a coastal kayaking/hiking/swimming trek to an isolated beach and little known turtle nesting site inside an ancient cliff-side lava tube, and, to top it off, a few games of “real” beach volleyball at Kalapaki Bay.

Flying back to the island of Oahu, the remainder of the trip was spent in Honolulu, where the team trained for four hours a day for the next eight days at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Under the guidance of hall-of-fame coach David Shoji from the UH women’s team, and his protégé and UH men’s team coach Charlie Wade, players worked intensively on all the basic skills of the game, including passing, hitting, serving, setting and blocking. With over 150 young volleyball players from across the country participating, the four from Wells were the only players from outside the United States.

The University of Hawaii is a perennial powerhouse in both women’s and men’s volleyball, and is a hotbed of world-class volleyball talent, including current USA Men’s Olympic Team Captain Clayton Stanley and former USA Women’s Olympic Team Captain Robyn Ah Mo.

On Nut – Seahawk volleyball teams opened up the 2011-2012 sports season undefeated with wins over traditional BISAC powerhouses Bangkok Patana, NIST and Thai-Chinese International School.

On Wednesday, August 31, both the U17 Boys and U17 Girls teams were in action against the Tigers of BPS. Playing on their home court, the Lady Seahawks were at first noticeably intimidated by the much taller visiting team. However, it didn’t take long for them to realize that the teams were much more evenly matched than they had initially thought. Behind the steady setting of Kanny Smith (Class of 2014) and Pleng (Class of 2016), and with the consistent all-around play of Marin Takahashi (Class of 2014), the girls conquered the visiting Lady Tigers, 3-1.

While the girls took care of business at home, the boys team travelled to BPS in Bangna for their first match of the season. With a returning team virtually intact after last year’s charter season, the Seahawks proved they deserved to play with the “big boys”, powering their way through games 1 and 2 behind the surprisingly consistent jump serves of Joon Young Lee (Class of 2013), power spikes of Kevin Han (Class of 2014) and monster blocks of Matthew Seo (Class of 2015). After a minor letdown in game 3, the team regrouped to cruise to a win in game 4 to win the match 3-1.

For their second match in as many weeks, the U17 Boys team stayed home to take on the Falcons of New International School Thailand (NIST). Despite playing on their home court for the first time this year, there was no sign of nervousness as the Seahawks jumped to quick leads in the first two games and cruised to a 2-0 lead. However, like their previous match, the team experienced a letdown through most of game 3. However, toward the end of that game, the team shook it off to force a deuce situation at 24-24. Despite eventually losing game 3 by a score of 24-26, the momentum had shifted to Wells’ side leading to an easy win in game 4, sealing the match for the Seahawks, 3-1.

The U17 Boys continued their streak by taking a break from their age bracket to test themselves against a higher age bracket when they visited Thai Chinese International School (TCIS) to take on their U19 Boys team on Monday, September 12. The age difference seemed to have intimidated the younger Seahawks as they dropped the first game 22-25. However, after a few “strong” words of encouragement from the coaching staff, the boys regained their confidence, ultimately blowing away the Wolves in three straight games, 25-11, 25-22, and 25-11, for a final 3-1 win. The victory pushed Wells’ record to 3-0 for the season.

Next up for the U17 Boys will be the EIS Varsity Boys Volleyball Invitational on Sunday, September 25.

A relatively light two weeks in sports due to the mid-term break featured more volleyball games for both boys and girls JV teams, and a single basketball game for the Senior Girls.

The JV Boys Volleyball Team continues to face the bigger teams of BISAC, beginning with an away game at Ekamai International School. Despite taking a quick 2-0 lead, the young Seahawks could not put it away as the host Flames roared back to win three games in a row to take the match 3-2. Similarly, inconsistency and inexperience took its toll against the Lions of Harrow International School with Wells once again dropping a close match 3-2. The Seahawks were finally able to get back into the win column with a single match during the mid-term break against the Wolves of Ramkamhaeng Adventist International School. Heroics from freshman reserve Sitibhum “Tenn” Chaiwatnarathorn and Thapadit “Oxygen” Suksakorn helped the Seahawks fend off 8 game points to steal games 1 and 3 away from the Wolves, on their way to a 3-1 win.

Also seeing action was the JV Girls Volleyball Team with a home game versus Ekamai International School. Despite showing steady improvement since the beginning of the season, the Lady Seahawks were no match for the older and more experienced Flames, losing 3-0.

The lone basketball game came just before the mid-term break with the Senior Girls hosting Regents International School. Every player on the host team had a chance to play as the Lady Seahawks dominated the game from the start and cruised to a 26-8 victory.

The Seahawks come back from break with a heavy slate of both basketball and volleyball games. The Boys JV Volleyball team stays home to take on BISAC heavyweights Bangkok Pattana (Monday) and Harrow (Thursday), while the volleyball girls take a break. In basketball, Wells takes on St. Andrew’s (U11 Coed, U15 Boys, U15 Girls), BCIS (U11 Coed, U15 Boys, U15 Girls), and St. Stephen’s (Senior Boys, Senior Girls).
