About Camille Clarin

Camille Clarin is a 20-year-old Fil-Canadian, who was born and raised in Canada. At a young age, she was able to experience different kinds of circumstances, from living away from her family at the age of 14 to flying across the world to chase her dreams. At the age of 16, she tore her ACL and as a result, she had to put in a lot of work to get back in shape, which was a really difficult time for her and her family.

Camille isn’t only great in basketball but she also excels in school with a 3.83 GPA.Camille was disappointed about the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) which is the top collegiate sports organization in the Philippines. These big schools have thousands of supporters watching them but since basketball is a non-dominated sport for women, she and her teammates did not receive a lot of support, despite their 96-0 streak.

Due to that, she wants to change our society’s perspective on women in sports. She believes that people should watch women play “not because of what they wear, but because of how they play”. They put in the same kind of effort, and have the same resilience, perseverance, and dedication as men do.Clarin is an advocate for sports equality. She points out that people tend to forget to support women who play basketball, as it can sometimes be perceived as a male-dominated sport. Regardless, there are many women basketball players who are talented and passionate about what they do.

The Importance of Perseverance

On Tuesday, October 12th, members from the BDFY Club, teachers, staff, and high school students, together with a few middle school students participated in an online Q&A with Camille. The purpose of the event was for Camille to share her experiences with the students and serve as a good reminder that there are other people who go through ups and downs in life. With this, students could receive advice in dealing with challenges and adversity, as well as make informed decisions about their futures.

Camille Clarin

As a positive influential figure or athlete, we asked her if she receives criticism and how she deals with it. According to Camille, she says that she is very lucky as she only receives criticism whenever she plays. On the other hand, she feels a little frustrated whenever there are people who want to bring her down. People never really know how hard-working she is. Nevertheless, at the end of the day, she knows that she cannot please everyone. As she reminded us,“Everything is good at the end, so if it’s not good, it’s not the end”.

Lastly, we asked her what advice she could give to students who do not have as much self-confidence. She replied by saying, “If you put in the work, and you believe in what you do, your confidence will come”. It is really important to build a relationship with yourself, and it will take time to develop self-confidence.

Times Around the World
Mr. David – Grade 2A Homeroom Teacher

Recently we have been studying time in grade two. Using the mechanical gear clocks students have been exploring how the hands move around the clock face. Each student has make their own paper plate clocks showing times to the hour, quarter hour, half hour, and quarter till. We also practiced telling time to five minute increments. When problem solving students worked with class and train schedules to determine when future events will happen. We then decided to study time for International Day! Each student selected a country and city that they are interested in. On March 6th at 2:30 P.M. we looked up the time and date for each of those cities. We discovered that most places had a different time and that some places where just waking up. We also saw that some cities, such as Seattle, were still March 5th!

Primary School Sports Day 2018
Ms. Dana – Grade 5A Homeroom Teacher

Who will run the fastest? Who will pull the hardest? Who will balance the longest? These were the questions buzzing around ۿ۴ý on the Monday of Sports Day. Students from grade 1 to grade 5 worked together in their house teams to complete various feats of strength, speed, and athleticism. There were some disappointing defeats, but also moments of pride where students were able to pull together and accomplish something great. At the end of the day, everyone had a great time.

Measurement in Grade 4
Mr. Snider
Head of Primary and Grade 4A Homeroom Teacher
In math, class 4A has been exploring measurement. The textbook focuses on standard metric measurements (meters, grams, and liters), converting between units, and solving problems with these measurements. In order to enrich the unit, class 4A has been doing hands-on stations using the standard metric measurements, but then have gone way beyond this. The class has been using a wide variety of tools and instruments to measure all sorts of things, including temperature, humidity, decibel levels around the school, water purity using a TDS meter, water density, and volume with a variety of tools. The idea behind the stations is for students to learn all the different ways measurement affects and influences our lives, while having fun doing so.

Bang Na – The Seahawk Volleyball Program took a giant leap forward in earning the respect of Bangkok’s premiere international school athletic programs, garnering a rare championship sweep at the 2012 Bangkok Patana U17 Volleyball Invitational this weekend. Both the boys and girls teams brought home the gold, despite representing the smallest school in a tournament field that included some of the top schools in Bangkok, including host school Bangkok Patana, ۿ۴ý, Ruamrudee International School, International Community School, NIST, and the American School of Bangkok.

In the boys tourney, Wells had an early start, facing NIST in their first match. Starting out strong, the Seahawks were able to withstand several Falcon surges to win in straight sets, 2-0 (25-22, 25-18). The Seahawks were able to carry their intensity through to the second match, soundly defeating the Phoenix from Ruamrudee, 2-0 (25-16, 25-16), and securing a berth in the play-offs.

In the semi-finals, the boys faced their toughest challenge to that point, facing the Panthers of ISB. After a series of lead changes in game 1, the game was tied at 23-23 before Wells was able to pull away to win by two, 25-23. With that close game serving as a wake-up call, the Seahawks roared back to life, taking game two 25-13, and earning a spot in the championship game against NIST who defeated ICS, 2-0, in the other semi-final match up.

Having already defeated NIST in pool play, Wells had the confidence needed to build an insurmountable lead early in game 1 of the championship match, leading to a lopsided 25-10 win for the Seahawks. However, the Falcons refused to give up, putting up a fight in game two to make it a bit closer. Nonetheless, the hunger for their first championship was much too strong as the Seahawks held on for a 25-21 win, earning gold for the school’s volleyball program for the first time in its short history.

Not to be upstaged by the boys, the Lady Seahawks were also able to make it to the play-offs with a big win over Bangkok Patana, 2-0 (25-12, 25-8), and a split-set win over NIST, 2-1 (25-18, 21-25, 17-15).

However, the girls had a much tougher road ahead of them. In the semi-finals, Wells found itself backed against the wall as the Lady Panthers of ISB took charge of the match at the onset, winning game 1 easily 25-18. However, the Lady Seahawks refused to submit, dominating the second game 25-11 and moving on the finals with a win in the tie-breaker, 15-12.

As in the semi-final match, Wells put themselves in a hole in the finals, dropping game 1 to NIST, 22-25, and falling behind early in game 2. However, with the sideline urging them on, the girls stormed back to steal game two, 25-22. With everything on the line, both teams traded points with the lead see-sawing back and forth for most of the game. However, a late run of strong serving allowed the Seahawks to prevail, giving Wells a sweep of the tourney championships.

A member of TISAC, Wells Seahawks has been competing regularly with the larger schools as no other team in the conference currently has a formal volleyball program. The school hopes to change this as it plans to host, on a trial basis, the first TISAC volleyball tournament later in the school year. More photos of the tournament can be viewed on our .

GO SEAHAWKS!

Wells Seahawks with hall-of-fame coach Dave Shoji

Hawaii, USA – Four Wells Seahawks and their coaches participated in eight days of intensive training with world-class players and university coaches at the University of Hawaii’s summer volleyball program held in Honolulu in early July. Along with their coaches Mr. Antonio Boff and Mr. Ray de la Peña, Varsity/JV Girls Volleyball captain Marin Takahashi, Varsity/JV Boys co-captains Bo-An Shang Kuan and Kevin Han, and Under-15 Boys captain Peter Choi traveled on a journey few people can even imagine, let alone experience firsthand.

The adventure began with a three-day tour of the island of Kauai to visit Mr. Ray’s childhood home and to get a taste of what it’s like to grow up in paradise. Highlights of this side trip included kayaking up a serene tropical river, snorkeling with giant green sea turtles, a coastal kayaking/hiking/swimming trek to an isolated beach and little known turtle nesting site inside an ancient cliff-side lava tube, and, to top it off, a few games of “real” beach volleyball at Kalapaki Bay.

Flying back to the island of Oahu, the remainder of the trip was spent in Honolulu, where the team trained for four hours a day for the next eight days at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Under the guidance of hall-of-fame coach David Shoji from the UH women’s team, and his protégé and UH men’s team coach Charlie Wade, players worked intensively on all the basic skills of the game, including passing, hitting, serving, setting and blocking. With over 150 young volleyball players from across the country participating, the four from Wells were the only players from outside the United States.

The University of Hawaii is a perennial powerhouse in both women’s and men’s volleyball, and is a hotbed of world-class volleyball talent, including current USA Men’s Olympic Team Captain Clayton Stanley and former USA Women’s Olympic Team Captain Robyn Ah Mo.

On Nut – Seahawk volleyball teams opened up the 2011-2012 sports season undefeated with wins over traditional BISAC powerhouses Bangkok Patana, NIST and Thai-Chinese International School.

On Wednesday, August 31, both the U17 Boys and U17 Girls teams were in action against the Tigers of BPS. Playing on their home court, the Lady Seahawks were at first noticeably intimidated by the much taller visiting team. However, it didn’t take long for them to realize that the teams were much more evenly matched than they had initially thought. Behind the steady setting of Kanny Smith (Class of 2014) and Pleng (Class of 2016), and with the consistent all-around play of Marin Takahashi (Class of 2014), the girls conquered the visiting Lady Tigers, 3-1.

While the girls took care of business at home, the boys team travelled to BPS in Bangna for their first match of the season. With a returning team virtually intact after last year’s charter season, the Seahawks proved they deserved to play with the “big boys”, powering their way through games 1 and 2 behind the surprisingly consistent jump serves of Joon Young Lee (Class of 2013), power spikes of Kevin Han (Class of 2014) and monster blocks of Matthew Seo (Class of 2015). After a minor letdown in game 3, the team regrouped to cruise to a win in game 4 to win the match 3-1.

For their second match in as many weeks, the U17 Boys team stayed home to take on the Falcons of New International School Thailand (NIST). Despite playing on their home court for the first time this year, there was no sign of nervousness as the Seahawks jumped to quick leads in the first two games and cruised to a 2-0 lead. However, like their previous match, the team experienced a letdown through most of game 3. However, toward the end of that game, the team shook it off to force a deuce situation at 24-24. Despite eventually losing game 3 by a score of 24-26, the momentum had shifted to Wells’ side leading to an easy win in game 4, sealing the match for the Seahawks, 3-1.

The U17 Boys continued their streak by taking a break from their age bracket to test themselves against a higher age bracket when they visited Thai Chinese International School (TCIS) to take on their U19 Boys team on Monday, September 12. The age difference seemed to have intimidated the younger Seahawks as they dropped the first game 22-25. However, after a few “strong” words of encouragement from the coaching staff, the boys regained their confidence, ultimately blowing away the Wolves in three straight games, 25-11, 25-22, and 25-11, for a final 3-1 win. The victory pushed Wells’ record to 3-0 for the season.

Next up for the U17 Boys will be the EIS Varsity Boys Volleyball Invitational on Sunday, September 25.

A relatively light two weeks in sports due to the mid-term break featured more volleyball games for both boys and girls JV teams, and a single basketball game for the Senior Girls.

The JV Boys Volleyball Team continues to face the bigger teams of BISAC, beginning with an away game at Ekamai International School. Despite taking a quick 2-0 lead, the young Seahawks could not put it away as the host Flames roared back to win three games in a row to take the match 3-2. Similarly, inconsistency and inexperience took its toll against the Lions of Harrow International School with Wells once again dropping a close match 3-2. The Seahawks were finally able to get back into the win column with a single match during the mid-term break against the Wolves of Ramkamhaeng Adventist International School. Heroics from freshman reserve Sitibhum “Tenn” Chaiwatnarathorn and Thapadit “Oxygen” Suksakorn helped the Seahawks fend off 8 game points to steal games 1 and 3 away from the Wolves, on their way to a 3-1 win.

Also seeing action was the JV Girls Volleyball Team with a home game versus Ekamai International School. Despite showing steady improvement since the beginning of the season, the Lady Seahawks were no match for the older and more experienced Flames, losing 3-0.

The lone basketball game came just before the mid-term break with the Senior Girls hosting Regents International School. Every player on the host team had a chance to play as the Lady Seahawks dominated the game from the start and cruised to a 26-8 victory.

The Seahawks come back from break with a heavy slate of both basketball and volleyball games. The Boys JV Volleyball team stays home to take on BISAC heavyweights Bangkok Pattana (Monday) and Harrow (Thursday), while the volleyball girls take a break. In basketball, Wells takes on St. Andrew’s (U11 Coed, U15 Boys, U15 Girls), BCIS (U11 Coed, U15 Boys, U15 Girls), and St. Stephen’s (Senior Boys, Senior Girls).

A busy two weeks of Seahawk Sports began with the Senior Girls continuing to have their way with fellow TISAC rivals, followed by the debut of two of last year’s defending TISAC champions: the U15 Girls and U15 Boys teams.

On Wednesday, September 29, the Senior Girls welcomed the Lady Lions from Bangkok Christian International School (BCIS) for Wells’ first home game of the year. The game started out as a defensive battle with neither team able to capitalize on the other’s turnovers. However, as the game progressed, the Lady Seahawks were able to pull away and eventually rout their visitors, 25-9.

The debuts of both defending championship teams took place at TISAC-rival Bangkok Prep on Thursday afternoon, September 30. Despite the expected hostile environment both teams were able to walk away with blowout wins.

Action continued for both U15 teams as the boys and girls traveled to Khao Yai for the St. Stephen’s Khao Yai Basketball Invitational from Friday, October 1, through Sunday, October 3. Facing several “big name” BISAC schools, our boys captured the tournament championship by going 5-1 overall, with a thrilling 24-22 overtime victory of the Harrow Lions in the final game. Our girls also were relatively successful, placing 3rd, with losses only to BISAC powerhouses TCIS and Shrewsbury.

TISAC play continued on Wednesday, October 6, with our Senior Boys team blowing out Bangkok Prep 46-20 to remain undefeated at 3-0. The blowouts continued with strong wins for our Senior Girls team versus Keerapat, 42-22, and our Under 13 Boys team blowing out St. Andrew’s 35-9. The lone loss for this period was from our Under 13 Girls team, which lost a hard-fought defensive game to St. Andrew’s, 18-12.

The upcoming week will be dominated by volleyball games, with the JV Boys Volleyball Team taking on NIST in their first home game in the new Wells Colosseum. NIST visits the campus hoping to avenge an earlier loss to Wells on the Falcon’s home court. The boys continue play on Thursday when they travel to Ruamrudee in Minburi. The JV Girls Volleyball Team will also see some action on Tuesday against ASB in Bangna. In basketball, both the U13 Boys and U13 Girls will be traveling to Bangkok Prep on Thursday.

U15 Boys are champs, U15 Girls place 3rd at Khao Yai tournament

KHAO YAI, NAKHON RATCHASSIMA – Fresh off a stunning upset in boys volleyball against New International School of Thailand (NIST) of the Bangkok International School Athletic Conference (BISAC), the ۿ۴ý Seahawks continued to assert themselves as a major force to contend with in interscholastic sports even amongst Thailand’s largest international schools.

Not taking any breaks after their TISAC opener the day before, the U15 Boys and Girls took their first ever out-of-town road trip, participating in the 2010 St. Stephen’s Khao Yai Invitational Basketball Tournament, held in Nakhon Ratchassima from October 1st to 3rd. Featured in the tournament were BISAC powerhouses Harrow International School (Boys) and Thai-Chinese International School (TCIS), along with fellow BISAC members Traill International School and Shrewsbury (Girls). Also entering the tournament were St. Andrew’s International School – Sathorn Campus and, of course, the host school, St. Stephen’s International School – Khao Yai.

In what turned out to be yet another classic battle between David and Goliath, the U15 Boys Basketball Team fought its way to the championship game, facing the Lions from Harrow International School. Despite suffering an early blow-out loss to the Lions, 30-12, in pool play, the Seahawks were able beat TCIS by one point, and blow out Traill, St. Andrew’s and host St. Stephen’s Khao Yai, to earn the number two spot in the championship game.

Not willing to squander a chance to redeem themselves, the Seahawks started the final game strong, taking an early lead behind the aggressive shooting of freshmen Chayut “Van” Chayutti and Sitibhum “Tenn” Chaiwatnarathorn. However, the Lions clawed their way back into the game, eventually overtaking Wells to a 15-13 lead with just a few minutes left in the fourth quarter. But the Seahawks refused to give up. A last minute offensive surge propelled Wells ahead 17-15 as the clock ticked down to zero. However, much to the dismay of a prematurely celebrating Seahawk crowd, a shooting foul was called against Wells with no time left, allowing Harrow one last chance to tie up the game. And, in dramatic fashion, the Lions showed their mettle, sinking both free throws to knot up the score at 17-17, forcing the game into overtime.

In the 5-minute extra period, veteran captain Yueh Ting “Kevin” Han decided to take charge of his team, forcing two quick steals to put Wells up 20-17 after an easy layup and 1 of 2 foul shots. But the Lions weren’t finished, catching the Seahawks with a layup and foul shot of their own to tie it at 20-20 with two minutes left in OT. However, another aggressive drive to the basket put Wells up 22-20. With the clock ticking down, the Lions rushed, perhaps too hastily, down the court only to turn the ball over on an errant pass, hence giving the Seahawks a chance to put up an insurance shot to take a commanding 24-20 lead. And, despite being able to add another two points with just 10 seconds left to close the gap at 24-22, the exasperated Lions could only chase the ball in vain as Seahawks wisely played “keep-away” to run down the clock and claim the tournament crown. For their accomplishment, team members earned themselves gold medals, 1st place certificates and a tournament championship plaque for the Wells trophy case.

The U15 Girls Team also was able to make a statement of its own, though not necessarily in as dramatic a fashion as the boys. Despite being vastly outnumbered and outsized by the BISAC behemoths, the Lady Seahawks hung tough but lost against TCIS, 16-13, and Shrewsbury, 24-19. Nonetheless, the Wells girls were able to earn victories against Traill, also from BISAC, and host school St. Stephen’s Khao Yai, to even their record at 2 wins and 2 losses, earning Wells a spot in the championship bracket.

Like the boys, the girls were given one final opportunity to show the crowd that they belonged among the elite schools. And show the crowd they did – at least at first.

The semi-final game was a rematch between the Lady Seahawks and the Lady Storm from Shrewsbury. Behind the quick hands of freshman captain and point guard Kanny Smith, and solid shooting by freshman center Marin Takahashi, Wells was able to build a commanding 8-2 lead in the first quarter. However, the aggressive full-court pressure from Shrewsbury eventually took its toll on the already short-staffed Lady Seahawks, allowing the Storm to surge ahead 18-14 by the final buzzer.

Wells’ girls did not, however, leave empty handed, as their appearance in the semi-final round earned them bronze medals and certificates for a 3rd place finish.

CONGRATULATIONS SEAHAWKS!!!
