On February 23rd, 2024, Thai Club paid a visit to the Santisuk Day Care Center. This nursery school, operating in Chalongkrung, currently has up to 200 students attending. The visit was a heartwarming and enriching experience, as we were able to plan activities with the children and contribute essential supplies to support the school, including milk, snacks, and various kitchen essentials. The appreciation from the teachers and students there were palpable and filled the atmosphere with joy.Santisuk Day Care Center

The day at Santisuk began with an opening ceremony followed by four engaging activities planned by the Thai Club. There were 66 students present that morning, ranging from Kindergarten 1-3, and they were divided by class into 3 groups in circles. The activities were as follows: bag painting which allowed the children to unleash their creativity onto plain canvas bags, jigsaw puzzles that encouraged problem-solving and technical skills among the children, and lastly, the color scratching and origami activities entertained motor skills and interactive learning environments.

The children exhibited genuine curiosity and enthusiasm during these activities and showcased their creations at the end of our time together. It was a reminder of how small gestures can greatly influence younger learners. Following the activities, the teachers offered us a quick tour of the school which provided valuable insights into the daily routines, learning spaces, and the dedication of the teachers and staff.听

The month of October is considered as Pinktober which is 鈥淏reast Cancer Awareness Month,鈥 founded by the American Cancer Society in October of 1985. Pinktober serves as an international health campaign with the purpose of globally raising awareness about breast cancer. Throughout October, the SerWIS club, a club dedicated to community service, planned various activities and events to celebrate Pinktober.听

Pinktober

Pinktober

SerWIS club members opened up Pinktober by making morning announcements at the beginning of October. A brief description of the purpose of the celebration of PINKtober and facts about diagnosis were shared with students and teachers. Once a week, SerWIS members made morning announcements about early prevention, survivor stories, and statistics about breast cancer. The purpose of these morning announcements were to inform and spread awareness among the school community about breast cancer knowledge that is not widely known.听

Pinktober

On top of verbal announcements, SerWIS organized 鈥淧ink Shirt Day.鈥 Pink has been chosen as the color of breast cancer awareness by Susan G.Komen for the Cure Foundation since the 1990s. All students and teachers were encouraged to wear pink shirts or items to celebrate PINKtober.听

Pinktober

Pinktober

Moreover, SerWIS encouraged the school community to contribute in improving research for breast cancer and supporting the diagnosis by donating to the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer Foundation through a donation box in the lobby. Over 1000 THB of donations have been donated to Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer Foundation. SerWIS Club would like to show appreciation to everyone for your donations. Thank you very much!听

Pinktober

In addition, Wells SerWIS club engaged in an inter-School initiative with ICS and NIST International Schools to celebrate PINKtober through a connection made at the ServICE Conference earlier in September. The purpose of this musical event was to spread awareness about breast cancer and the theme of 鈥楬armony in Health鈥 through music, celebrating physical & mental health, and uniting international schools with the mission to promote and advocate for quality health. Along with wearing Pink shirts, SerWIS held PINKtober Music Festival with the theme of 鈥淗armony in Health,鈥 during middle and high school lunch periods on Friday, October 27, 2023.

Pinktober

Pinktober

For Primary school, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students danced along to the song 鈥淔ight Song鈥 by Rachel Platten to show positive and powerful energy and honor people fighting against breast cancer. For middle and high schoolers, Mr.Richie, one of our talented teachers, played a guitar and sang along to the song 鈥淪oon You鈥檒l Get Better鈥 by Taylor Swift to celebrate women empowerment and breast cancer awareness. Students gathered in the coliseum wearing pink shirts or ribbons to show their support. As a product of this collaboration, a Pink Music Movie听 consisting of pictures and videos of students showing 鈥淗armony in Health鈥 from 3 different international schools was produced.

This past weekend from September 15th until the 17th, over 20 of Wells鈥 high school students attended the 13th annual ServICE Conference at NIST International School! The ServICE conference is a collaborative, largely student-led event organized by various international schools in Bangkok. The aim of the conference is to inspire, connect, and empower students to create meaningful changes within their communities and surrounding environment.

ServICE Conference 2023

ServICE Conference 2023

The conference provided students with opportunities to share and learn from each others鈥 experiences in collaboration with numerous local projects and organizations. This was achieved through various activities, such as the impassioned keynote speeches, 鈥楬ow-To鈥 sessions for students wishing to raise awareness about nationwide NGOs, and most memorably, the ICExperiences where students were able to gain firsthand experience with the missions of nonprofits.

On the first day of the conference, students were welcomed with a lively icebreaker, setting the tone for the day, followed by brief meet & greets from the ICExperiences. Followed by another popular event amongst students: the ICE Fair where organizations sold trinkets and were able to raise awareness and funds for their respective causes. To end the day, 鈥楬ow-To鈥 sessions were introduced as students made their way to the first rounds. Keynote speeches were delivered throughout the day as students reconvened in the auditorium to wind down and listen to their peers鈥 unique experiences.

ServICE Conference 2023

ServICE Conference 2023

ServICE Conference 2023

The second day of the conference followed a similar schedule to the first day; however, it was far more hands-on as new students had familiarized themselves with the events prior. The icebreaker energized students once more as students immersed themselves within their ICExperiences for the majority of the day. Students were placed in diverse groups giving them the chance to network and mingle with other students while simultaneously supporting community organizations, including RoyRak, Shark Guardians, Rescued Glass, Bangkok Soap Opera and Love Wildlife. Needless to say, countless friendships were formed during these workshops and students were able to collaboratively engage in direct service!

ServICE Conference 2023

The third day was the most hectic, but the most rewarding as the conference came to an end. It was truly bittersweet as our seniors rejoiced over a successful experience, but realized this would be their last conference. Needless to say, the day went by in a flash with most of the day dedicated to 鈥業CE Action Planning鈥 to spark change for the remainder of the school year, carrying on ServICE鈥檚 legacy beyond the conference. The ICE Fair was also brought back for the second time before the closing ceremony, marking the end of the 13th conference. Students bid their newly-made friends goodbye, and promised to cherish the memories made over the past few days and continue inter-school collaboration.

ServICE Conference 2023

ServICE Conference 2023

Special acknowledgements to a few of our student leaders: Sana Shibuichi, Rachel Kim, Franny Pandya and Tunn Sayamipuk (Class of 2024) for leading a How-To workshop on repurposing plastic bottles to combat plastic pollution in today鈥檚 world and raise awareness of the importance of environmental sustainability.

Overall, all of our students left the conference feeling inspired and empowered. It was energizing to interact and collaborate with peers from other schools. Wells would like to thank NIST for their exceptional job hosting the conference, as well as the teacher advisors for their ongoing support with this event.

ServICE Conference 2023

We look forward to seeing what students will do with their inspiration from the conference, and how they will continue to make a positive difference in the school and local community. We are also very excited to announce that next year鈥檚 conference will be hosted by 扣扣传媒 at our new Chonburi campus! We look back at the 13th with fondness, and look forward to the promise of the 14th!

On the 15th of February, Wells鈥 American Sign Language (ASL) Club paid a visit to two noteworthy locations for the deaf community in Bangkok. The first being the Setsatian School for the Deaf, and the latter being the YimSoo Cafe, a cafe that promotes the use of sign language in order to accommodate their employees with hearing disabilities. This trip was particularly useful for the members of the ASL club since we were able to apply our knowledge of sign language in the real world, whilst learning the fundamentals of Thai sign language from patient and enthusiastic experts, namely the students and staff at Setsatian who welcomed us with warmth and excitement.听听

Comments from our leaders:听听

鈥淭his trip to Setsatian School for the Deaf was a life changing experience for me. Through this trip not only did I learn Thai sign language but got to experience how deaf people communicate and get through daily life. The kids at the school were very friendly and I felt really welcomed in the school. I would definitely go on this trip again next year!鈥

– Franny, Club Leader (Class of 2024)

鈥淎s deaf students cannot speak to express their feelings, they were all rich in facial expressions. I realized that deaf people appear more friendly and welcoming from these dramatic facial expressions, and I felt very comfortable interacting with them. I cannot wait to see them again.听

– Risa, Club Leader (Class of 2024)

ASL Club
Initially, we were all quite nervous of how our presence would be received upon entering Setsatian, and how smoothly the activities we had planned would go, but by the time we introduced ourselves and the workshops began, we were slowly able to ease into the task at hand, especially due to the organization of our club leaders.

ASL Club

We began by teaching the students how to make origami cranes and hearts, then moved onto matching games and Uno shortly after. Although there were minor setbacks in the beginning, we were able to adjust to our atmosphere as best we could. Much of our reassurance can be attributed to the Setsatian students, who were nothing but patient with us throughout this process, and seemed to thoroughly enjoy the activities we had planned, allowing us to form connections beyond the need for words.听

By the time we had to depart, one could easily classify our visit as a success as new friendships had been formed, and the continuation of our partnership with the school, renewed and ready for the new members of ASL to continue the legacy.听

Our final stop before heading back to Wells was the YimSoo cafe, where we were able to learn the basics of ordering food and drink in sign language, and were presented with the opportunity to try the beverages the cafe had to offer.听

ASL Club

All in all, the trip left all of us in high spirits as we made our way back, and overall quite satisfied with the turnout, since we were presented with a hands-on learning experience, and a memorable trip we spent, united as a club.听

ASL Club

Comments from club members about the trip:

I enjoyed watching my students step out of their comfort zone and quickly adjust to make the most out of their time with the kids. They made connections and impressed the staff as well. I could not be more proud!鈥澨

– Ms. Jessica, ASL Club Advisor

鈥淚 was very nervous about any difficulty in communication among deaf students at the beginning. However, through different activities, we instantly got close and became friends! We shared each other鈥檚 Instagram accounts and I am still in contact with my friends at the Setsatian school. I even did a video call and they taught me many TSL words! I am already looking forward to seeing them on the next trip.鈥澨

– Seoyeon (Class of 2025)

鈥淚 was really amused with this trip to the deaf school as I thought it would be really challenging to communicate with the little children, but to our surprise they were much older and very fun to communicate with. I enjoyed playing UNO with them and they did not fail to entertain all of us. I would most definitely love to go again.鈥

– Zara (Class of 2024)

鈥淭he trip to the deaf school was very enriching as it was fun to be able to interact with them and see their facial expressions. Although it was nerve-wracking at first, we eventually felt very welcomed by them. It was also amusing to play UNO with them in unconventional ways.鈥澨

– Li Han (Class of 2024)

鈥淚 enjoyed interacting and playing with the deaf students. It gave me more confidence and comfort at the place and I’m impressed by their skills in making Origami.鈥澨

– Kim (Class of 2024)

鈥淚 found it very fascinating that there are people who could live without one of the five senses and still enjoy life. As I interacted with the students, I noticed that they liked to joke around and play certain games just like normal people would like to. Overall, everyone was very friendly and welcoming, making it a fun and unique experience.鈥澨

– Cowboy (Class of 2024)听

鈥淭he trip to the Deaf school was a very amusing experience as I have never been to a place like it before. I learned a lot of things as well as had fun trying to communicate with the kids using sign language. I remember making origami and playing UNO to entertain the kids. Overall, it was a very fun experience.鈥澨

– Farzam (Class of 2024)

鈥淭he trip to Setsatian School was my first ever interaction with a deaf person. Growing up, it never really struck me that there are people who have it harder than us. The experience was a sensational one to be exact. Starting from strangers to friends, it really went fast like an arrow. Even though we have zero experience talking to deaf people, they made us feel welcome and treated us like we were normal people. I believe that there is a lesson behind everything. And the lesson I learnt from this experience is that there are many different types of people everywhere and not all of them may be good. But one thing is for sure. It is to never judge a person before you get to know them.鈥澨

– Binay (Class of 2026)
