扣扣传媒 Boys Tennis Team Crowned National Champions at 2023 Thailand School Cup

Our Seahawk varsity boys tennis players were in Minburi from Saturday to Monday, September 2-4, to vie for the title of national champion at the 2023 Thailand School Cup, sponsored by 100Plus and organized by Thai Tennis Magazine at the Game-Set-Match Tennis Center. Twelve of the country鈥檚 top boys teams were invited and seeded based on a criteria that included past performance, international (ITF) and national (LTAT) ranking of each team鈥檚 individual players. This year鈥檚 field included international schools, as well as Thai government schools and Thai private schools, seeded as follows: Seed 1 – 扣扣传媒; Seed 2 – Prasarnmit Demonstration School; Seed 3 – Khon Khaen University Demonstration School; Seed 4 – Panyapiwat Institute Of Management Demonstration School; Seed 5 – Assumption College Sriracha Campus; Seed 6 – Assumption College Thonburi Campus; Seed 7 – Triam Udom Suksa School; Seed 8 – Patumwan Demonstration School; Seed 9 – Ramkhamhaeng University Demonstration School; Seed 10 – St. Gabriel鈥檚 College; Seed 11 – Silpakorn University Demonstration School; and Seed 12 – Bangkok Patana School.

In pool play, Wells went undefeated, beating Assumption College Thonburi, St. Gabriel鈥檚 College and Ramkhamhaeng University Demonstration School, all by the same score of 3-0. In the semi-final match, Wells was paired against Patumwan Demonstration School who, despite a lower seed, made it out of pool play as the 4th-ranked team. However, Wells boys continued their dominance, with Penn Charusorn winning 2-0 (4-1,4-0) at 1st Singles, Riku Higash winning 2-0 (4-0,4-0) at 2nd Singles, and the pair of Kla Laosakulphan and Patrick Pattanalerthpan winning 2-0 (4-1,4-1) in doubles.

The championship matches were arguably the most challenging. However, true to form, our Seahawks wrapped up an undefeated tournament run, defeating 2nd-ranked Prasarnmit Demonstration School, 3-0. However, though Penn cruised to a 2-0 (4-0,4-0) win and Kla/Patrick also won 2-0 (4-1,4-1) in doubles, Riku did face a stiff challenge in the 2nd Singles match. However, he eventually pulled off the win at 2-0 (5-3,4-2).

After the dust settled, the final Thailand top-four school rankings for boys tennis teams were as follows:

听听听听听听1st Place – 扣扣传媒

听听听听听听2nd Place – Prasarnmit Demonstration School

听听听听听听3rd Place – Assumption College Sriracha Campus

听听听听听听4th Place – Patumwan Demonstration School

With Thai competition completed, our tennis players, boys and girls, will be preparing for higher level international competition at overseas venues throughout the school year.

Congratulations Seahawks!

3, 2, 1, Blast Off!!

Grade 2 students have been exploring the solar system unit – one of the most exciting units students always look forward to learn! This space unit involves a number of interactive activities and fun experiments.听

Students have shown a great interest in learning about the history of the universe, particularly about the discovery of the Milky Way galaxy and how the Sun and the Moon were formed. They researched facts and information about the inner planets, outer planets, and also the dwarf planets. They were captivated by the explosion of stars and the appearance of the Asteroid Belt and Kuiper Belt.

To complement our learning, students created the solar system model painting to make a visual representation of the planets in our solar system as well as other celestial bodies in space. They enjoyed using their artistic skills in painting the planets and sprinkling glitter all around to add the finishing touches. Everyone鈥檚 final project turned out spectacular!

As part of their STEAM activity, students were given a challenge to design a space station using recyclables. After studying the purpose of the International Space Station and how astronauts live there, each child got creative with their ideas while making sure to include the main components of a space station such as modules and solar panels.

Students鈥 desire to become an astronaut when they grow up was further expressed in their writing project where each student chose a planet or a celestial object which they imagined and explored in their writing. Everyone got really creative with their entertaining stories. What a fabulous month of learning it was in Grade 2!

On Friday, Aug 30 2019 all Wells Thong Lo parents were invited to attend a BACK TO SCHOOL BASH!听 During this event parents had the opportunity to meet with their child鈥檚 Homeroom Teacher for an overview of the Wells early years and primary programs and find out what to expect from the year ahead. Teachers shared specific information about arrival and dismissal – buses, snack, lunch, volunteering opportunities, classroom schedules, and special activities. Parents also got the chance to work with their child to make 鈥榳ishes鈥 for the coming year, and discussed how we, as a class and school can make those wishes come true.

Thank you to our families that took time out to attend the first event of the year and help our Wells Community grow.听 The first chapter of school life is an exciting time for children and their families. The initial steps in a child’s learning journey should be filled with excitement, anticipation and wonder about what lies ahead. Our goal is to help children and families feel comfortable, safe and happy here at Wells Thong Lo.

Back-to-back champions at the ISB Panther Invitational.

In yet another role as David, Wells varsity boys volleyball team faced another Goliath international schools, and, for the second year in a row, our Seahawks came out victorious, going undefeated after beating Stamford American International School (SAIS) from Singapore in the championship match of the 扣扣传媒 (ISB) Panther Invitational Volleyball Tournament held this past weekend.

The tournament, which ran over two days, featured international schools from Thailand and other Southeast Asia countries including Singapore and Vietnam.

On Friday, pool play began with wins against International Community School Bangkok, 2-0 (25-22, 25-15) and United World College Dover from Singapore, 2-0 (25-10, 25-18). The winning streak continued on Saturday against Saigon South International School from Vietnam, 2-0 (25-22, 25-12) putting us in 1st place in Pool A.

For the semi-finals, our boys faced host ISB, who placed 2nd in Pool B, winning 2-0 (25-21, 25-22), including a dramatic come-from-behind win in set 2.

Finally, the championship match turned out to be the most challenging with both Wells and SAIS going undefeated through their respective semi-final matches. However, after splitting the first two sets, the Seahawks proved too much for the Lions, cruising to a win in the tie-breaker for the championship trophy, 2-1 (25-21, 18-25, 15-5).

In the second tournament, held all day Sunday, a condensed version of the varsity boys squad took on other AISAA league teams, as well as visiting teams from Chonburi and Cambodia. Pool play turned out to be a cakewalk as Wells easily beat AISAA teams from Berkeley International School, 2-0 (25-10, 25-9) and Mahidol University International Demonstration School (MUIDS), 2-0 (25-5, 25-5), followed by a win against the International School of the Eastern Seaboard (ISE), 2-0 (25-23, 25-7). In the knock-out matches, Wells beat Logos International School from Cambodia, 2-0 (25-8, 25-15) and, finally, Ekamai International School, 2-0 (25-7, 25-19) to repeat as champions.

Also, playing in the tournaments were the Wells varsity girls who played hard, winning two matches, both against International School Ho Chi Minh City (ISHCMC), to place 7th at the ISB tournament. At the AISAA tournament, the girls went undefeated in pool play, but fell in the semi-finals to the eventual champions from Logos International School. The girls ended in 3rd place with a win against East-West International School from Cambodia.

Both teams continue the season with two more major tournaments, one in Malaysia and one in Vietnam, coming up through November.

Ekamai 鈥 For the second time this month, the Wells girls volleyball program challenged the bigger schools of BISAC, facing Ruamrudee, Harrow, and host EIS at the 2012 Ekamai International School Varsity Girls Volleyball Invitational Tournament on Sunday. Coming off a gold medal performance by the junior varsity team just two weeks prior, a very young varsity team nearly accomplished the improbable. The Lady Seahawks powered their way through pool play, defeating Ekamai Varsity 2-0 (25-12, 25-23), Ekamai JV 2-1 (25-23, 17-25, 15-12), and Ruamrudee 2-0 (25-23, 25-23), but dropping a match against Harrow 0-2 (20-25, 16-25). Nonetheless, based on winning records and head-to-head tiebreakers, Wells ended up at the top after pool play, earning them a spot in the championship match against pool-play runner-up Ruamrudee.

In the championship game, however, the Seahawks鈥 youth and inexperience became apparent as the confident and experienced Phoenix from Ruamrudee took advantage of nervous miscues and free balls to win in straight sets, 2-0 (25-19, 25-22), giving RIS the gold and leaving Wells with the silver.

With the Lady Seahawk varsity team made up largely of members of the under 15 and junior varsity teams, the future is certainly looking bright for Wells鈥 volleyball program. A member of TISAC, the Seahawks have been competing regularly with the larger schools outside of the conference, as no other team in TISAC currently has a formal volleyball program. The school hopes to change this as it plans to host, on a trial basis, the first TISAC volleyball tournament later in the school year.

Go Seahawks!

Wells Seahawks with hall-of-fame coach Dave Shoji

Hawaii, USA 鈥 Four Wells Seahawks and their coaches participated in eight days of intensive training with world-class players and university coaches at the University of Hawaii’s summer volleyball program held in Honolulu in early July. Along with their coaches Mr. Antonio Boff and Mr. Ray de la Pe帽a, Varsity/JV Girls Volleyball captain Marin Takahashi, Varsity/JV Boys co-captains Bo-An Shang Kuan and Kevin Han, and Under-15 Boys captain Peter Choi traveled on a journey few people can even imagine, let alone experience firsthand.

The adventure began with a three-day tour of the island of Kauai to visit Mr. Ray鈥檚 childhood home and to get a taste of what it鈥檚 like to grow up in paradise. Highlights of this side trip included kayaking up a serene tropical river, snorkeling with giant green sea turtles, a coastal kayaking/hiking/swimming trek to an isolated beach and little known turtle nesting site inside an ancient cliff-side lava tube, and, to top it off, a few games of 鈥渞eal鈥 beach volleyball at Kalapaki Bay.

Flying back to the island of Oahu, the remainder of the trip was spent in Honolulu, where the team trained for four hours a day for the next eight days at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Under the guidance of hall-of-fame coach David Shoji from the UH women鈥檚 team, and his prot茅g茅 and UH men鈥檚 team coach Charlie Wade,听 players worked intensively on all the basic skills of the game, including passing, hitting, serving, setting and blocking. With over 150 young volleyball players from across the country participating, the four from Wells were the only players from outside the United States.

The University of Hawaii is a perennial powerhouse in both women鈥檚 and men鈥檚 volleyball, and is a hotbed of world-class volleyball talent, including current USA Men鈥檚 Olympic Team Captain Clayton Stanley and former USA Women鈥檚 Olympic Team Captain Robyn Ah Mo.

On Nut 鈥 Seahawk volleyball teams opened up the 2011-2012 sports season undefeated with wins over traditional BISAC powerhouses Bangkok Patana, NIST and Thai-Chinese International School.

On Wednesday, August 31, both the U17 Boys and U17 Girls teams were in action against the Tigers of BPS. Playing on their home court, the Lady Seahawks were at first noticeably intimidated by the much taller visiting team. However, it didn鈥檛 take long for them to realize that the teams were much more evenly matched than they had initially thought. Behind the steady setting of Kanny Smith (Class of 2014) and Pleng (Class of 2016), and with the consistent all-around play of Marin Takahashi (Class of 2014), the girls conquered the visiting Lady Tigers, 3-1.

While the girls took care of business at home, the boys team travelled to BPS in Bangna for their first match of the season. With a returning team virtually intact after last year鈥檚 charter season, the Seahawks proved they deserved to play with the 鈥渂ig boys鈥, powering their way through games 1 and 2 behind the surprisingly consistent jump serves of Joon Young Lee (Class of 2013), power spikes of Kevin Han (Class of 2014) and monster blocks of Matthew Seo (Class of 2015). After a minor letdown in game 3, the team regrouped to cruise to a win in game 4 to win the match 3-1.

For their second match in as many weeks, the U17 Boys team stayed home to take on the Falcons of New International School Thailand (NIST). Despite playing on their home court for the first time this year, there was no sign of nervousness as the Seahawks jumped to quick leads in the first two games and cruised to a 2-0 lead. However, like their previous match, the team experienced a letdown through most of game 3. However, toward the end of that game, the team shook it off to force a deuce situation at 24-24. Despite eventually losing game 3 by a score of 24-26, the momentum had shifted to Wells鈥 side leading to an easy win in game 4, sealing the match for the Seahawks, 3-1.

The U17 Boys continued their streak by taking a break from their age bracket to test themselves against a higher age bracket when they visited Thai Chinese International School (TCIS) to take on their U19 Boys team on Monday, September 12. The age difference seemed to have intimidated the younger Seahawks as they dropped the first game 22-25. However, after a few 鈥渟trong鈥 words of encouragement from the coaching staff, the boys regained their confidence, ultimately blowing away the Wolves in three straight games, 25-11, 25-22, and 25-11, for a final 3-1 win. The victory pushed Wells鈥 record to 3-0 for the season.

Next up for the U17 Boys will be the EIS Varsity Boys Volleyball Invitational on Sunday, September 25.
