Mystery Book Hunt is one of the anticipated activities during Reading Month at ۿ۴ý Bangna. It started on March 1st after Ms. Viki, our school principal, announced all activities for this special event. Ms. Addie, the school librarian, dashed toward Ms. Viki and broke the bad news! Everyone was shocked and confused. Someone destroyed the giant book! Who could have done it?

Mystery book hunt

The students were concerned when the teachers explained how every page in our beautiful, hand-crafted book had been damaged. Piper from Grade 2 said he could not finish his drawings. Initially, Ete thought the giant bear in the library was responsible for this disaster. Every student was determined to find the villain! Wells students are indeed risk-takers and inquirers, and they were ready to solve the case.

Mystery book hunt

After the disaster, mysterious characters started to appear in our school. The students were bursting with ideas as the excitement began with two visitors. Some students said it was Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf.

Most of the Grade 1 students thought the teachers had tricked them! They caught the teachers having a secret meeting. K3 agreed that something was going on. However, how could they crack this mysterious case?

Mystery book hunt

There were many different theories about who broke the book such as that the monster liked books. It was very suspicious. The Grade 4 students predicted that the school’s Clutter Monster and its accomplice were the bad guys. The students collected clues on the bulletin board which had become a necessary center for reflective writing.

Later, Miss Marple and Nancy Drew flew to Wells Bangna to help our students solve the mystery! The students were thrilled to see the detectives in action. These keen detectives caught the Clutter Monster, which Grade 4 thought to be the culprit. The next week Geronimo Stilton and his sister Thea show up to help solve the mystery too.

The G1 students found a letter and read it aloud. The letter explained that the real villain was still causing chaos. The first-graders then decided to free the clutter monster.

The Bad Seed barged into the gym when the students were celebrating Pajama Day. Everyone was surprised. The Bad Seed confessed its unacceptable behavior. The students asked many questions: “Why did you destroy our book?”, “Why are you so bad?”, “Why are you wearing dark nail polish?” and “Why did you leave seeds and footprints?”.

The Bad Seed explained that it didn’t want to be mean anymore. It wanted to be a better seed. The students advised it on how to control its emotions. “We can help you be good”. In the end, the students gave the apologetic seed a socially distanced hug and wished it well on its journey back home.

We hope that this experience will inspire our students and our community on the importance of working together!

Reading Buddies

This year at Wells Bang Na, the Grade 3 students will be continuing their meetings with their little reading buddies in K1. “We need to do reading buddies so we can help K1 learn new things,” said Edward, age 8. To make their visits more enjoyable for the younger students, the Grade 3 class will add skits from Reader’s Theatre and their original, handwritten plays.

During our first visit, the boys put on a short skit “The Three Little Pigs”. “My experience as the narrator helped me see that the little kids can learn new things when we show them something first,” mentioned Brilliant, age 8. Edward reflected “We were inspired to do skits by Grade 5”.

“I like reading to my sister and her friends. It makes me feel like I am a teacher!”, commented Sam, age 9. Sam has grown into a leader by visiting the early years classroom. As a result of reading to K2 last year, he is more confident when he meets new children. Actually, all of the boys in Grade 3 have gained much confidence in terms of public speaking and presenting. As a result this year, they are less shy during reading buddies.

The students will continue to help one another build communication skills during this year of shared reading. “The little kids need to improve on their listening, so when we read to them we can remind them to pay attention,” shared Jason, age 8. The older students thought about what they would like to help the K1 students develop over the next few months of reading together. “I hope that the kids can sit still,” said Jason. “I hope that they improve on English so that when they grow up we can talk more,” thought Edward. “I hope that one day they can be reading buddies like us!,” Sam explained. We all hope that the K1 classes enjoy listening to reading as much as we enjoy visiting them.

March Morning Reading

As part of March reading month, the early years building at Wells Bang Na created a fun and interactive book morning for our young learners. There were five activities for the kindergarten students to engage in.

Station One- A variety of Dr. Seuss books was available for our students to read and explore. The kids were able to listen to the teacher’s read the books aloud. They were also able to read the picture books independently.

Station Two- In the second station, the students made book marks using different implements. The kids were able to utilize their fine motor skills while stamping, sticking, and coloring their bookmarks. They were even able to take the bookmarks home to mark their favorite books.

Station Three- In station three, the students chose different stories to roleplay. Students were able to practice cutting and slicing fruits and vegetables, wear animal masks, or pretend they were the three little pigs. It was a great way for the children to use their motor skills to ignite their cognition and brain development and develop literacy through play.

Station Four- In the fourth station, the students learned about characters in stories while creating their own art. The kids were able to choose from a variety of coloring sheets and mediums to color. Some children chose crayons, others chose markers, colored pencils or watercolor paints to create their artwork.

Station Five- In the fifth station the kids read aloud together using the overhead projector and Epic. The kids loved to read new stories on the big screen!

Reading Month

Every year March is reading month at ۿ۴ý. At our Bang Na campus, on March 20th, we invited our families and teachers to be “mystery readers”. The mystery readers arrived at the classrooms in their disguise with their favorite books. They read aloud to the kids. Reading aloud is the single most important activity to promote reading development in early learners. It stimulates cognition, ignites curiosity and develops language skills. At Wells Bang Na, our teachers engage in read alouds daily. We highly encourage our parents to read aloud at home as well.

The idea behind mystery readers is to effectively engage our community of learners and instill a love of literacy. Our parents were also very excited to dress up and read to the kids. Some students immediately guessed who their mystery reader was while others were not so sure. The kids loved the event and the parents were happy to spend quality time with their children at school. The activity continued to promote literacy in a fun and interactive way at our school. We love reading month!

Reading month at Wells Bang Na

During reading month at Wells Bang Na, our older students are meeting with younger learners for buddy reading sessions. The grade two and three students read with K2 classes on Tuesday, March 19th. The students had a relaxing reading experience together. “It was fun reading to the little kids because I love reading and want to share it with them”. said Jason, grade 2. One of the best aspects of this session was the great number of eager readers. “When I read to K2, the little kids were so nice, respectful and listened well”. thought Edward, from grade 2. “Reading to K2 is cool for me. I really like my partner in K2B. They like the books I choose”. mentioned Justin, grade 2. “It was nice to read to K2 because they are cute and can understand the stories, too”. said Brilliant, grade 2.

Times Around the World
Mr. David – Grade 2A Homeroom Teacher

Recently we have been studying time in grade two. Using the mechanical gear clocks students have been exploring how the hands move around the clock face. Each student has make their own paper plate clocks showing times to the hour, quarter hour, half hour, and quarter till. We also practiced telling time to five minute increments. When problem solving students worked with class and train schedules to determine when future events will happen. We then decided to study time for International Day! Each student selected a country and city that they are interested in. On March 6th at 2:30 P.M. we looked up the time and date for each of those cities. We discovered that most places had a different time and that some places where just waking up. We also saw that some cities, such as Seattle, were still March 5th!

Primary School Sports Day 2018
Ms. Dana – Grade 5A Homeroom Teacher

Who will run the fastest? Who will pull the hardest? Who will balance the longest? These were the questions buzzing around ۿ۴ý on the Monday of Sports Day. Students from grade 1 to grade 5 worked together in their house teams to complete various feats of strength, speed, and athleticism. There were some disappointing defeats, but also moments of pride where students were able to pull together and accomplish something great. At the end of the day, everyone had a great time.

Measurement in Grade 4
Mr. Snider
Head of Primary and Grade 4A Homeroom Teacher
In math, class 4A has been exploring measurement. The textbook focuses on standard metric measurements (meters, grams, and liters), converting between units, and solving problems with these measurements. In order to enrich the unit, class 4A has been doing hands-on stations using the standard metric measurements, but then have gone way beyond this. The class has been using a wide variety of tools and instruments to measure all sorts of things, including temperature, humidity, decibel levels around the school, water purity using a TDS meter, water density, and volume with a variety of tools. The idea behind the stations is for students to learn all the different ways measurement affects and influences our lives, while having fun doing so.

Reading Olympics 2018
Mr. Steve – Grade 4B Homeroom Teacher
The primary school has been promoting March as our month of reading in an event called the Reading Olympics. Students were engaged with meaningful reading opportunities all month long to support a love for reading and to encourage more reading among students. For the first weekly event, students wore shirts with words and were instructed to ‘Read My Shirt’. Students also participated ina Relax and Read where students were invited to cozy up in the gymnasium with a blanket and pillow to enjoy their favorite book. Other events included a bookmark designing competition, a used book sale, an author workshop and a big Raz Kids challenge where grades competed to see who could read the most at home. What a fullybookedmonth of events! A huge congratulations to the following students for their win in the RAZ Kids reading competition as well as the bookmark competition.
