The Back to school season is always an exciting time for students and teachers. Our students were happy to return to school, especially to meet their new teachers and friends. The first two weeks back went by fast. The students in primary classes worked on establishing essential agreements or codes of conduct that every student wanted to see from themselves and others. In the early years’ classes, students got to get to know each other, share their interests, and help decorate the classroom. By the third and fourth week of school, exciting learning experiences were underway, with each class unpacking their first unit of inquiry.Ìý

Wells Bang Na welcomed parents to visit the homeroom classes towards the end of August.
These visits were surprisingly exciting for our students. The upper primary students decided they would be the tour guides and managers, introducing their parents to teachers. The K3 students wanted to show off their learning centers and classroom organization systems. Our students were eager to introduce their friends to their moms and dads, strengthening the school and home connections and relationships. Families are an integral part of the support for our school, and we will continue to welcome their participation in event planning and whole-school initiatives throughout the year.Ìý

Our teachers are looking forward to an eventful year of learning. Seeing the happiness and enthusiasm of our students during this first month has breathed new life into our classrooms. We are so fortunate to have such a dynamic group of students that will continue to collaborate with teachers in positively shaping this school year and the campus environment.Wells BN

Grade 2 Bake Sale | Thong Lo Campus

On Friday, March 22nd, the students of Grade 2A and 2B held a bake sale Ìýfor all of the students in Thong Lor. As we are beginning our new theme of money, we decided to let Grade 2 lead the day and see how much money they can raise for charity, for the Camillian Home. ÌýThe students(and parents!) very kindly donated treats for the students to sell to the rest of the school. Throughout the day they rotated around and took turns in selling their treats to each class. They were also able to purchase treats during their own snack time.

By the end of the day, almost everything was sold out and the students were amazed with the big bag of money they had! They eagerly waited until the following Tuesday to be able to count it.

On Tuesday morning, Grade 2B counted it first and had to keep it a secret from Grade 2A to see if we counted the same amount! Note by note and coin by coin, the students counted the money in small groups. We made one large addition sum on the board and the students had to work it out. Finally, each class compared their findings and we counted 4,963 baht in total. ÌýThe students were so pleased with the amount and teachers very proud of all their hard work. Well done Grade 2.

Times Around the World
Mr. David – Grade 2A Homeroom Teacher

Recently we have been studying time in grade two. ÌýUsing the mechanical gear clocks students have been exploring how the hands move around the clock face. ÌýÌýEach student has make their own paper plate clocks showing times to the hour, quarter hour, half hour, and quarter till. ÌýWe also practiced telling time to five minute increments. When problem solving students worked with class and train schedules to determine when future events will happen.ÌýWe then decided to study time for International Day! ÌýEach student selected a country and city that they are interested in. ÌýOn March 6th at 2:30 P.M. we looked up the time and date for each of those cities. ÌýWe discovered that most places had a different time and that some places where just waking up. ÌýWe also saw that some cities, such as Seattle, were still March 5th!

Primary School Sports Day 2018ÌýÌý
Ms. Dana – Grade 5A Homeroom Teacher

Who will run the fastest? ÌýWho will pull the hardest? Who will balance the longest? ÌýThese were the questions buzzing around ¿Û¿Û´«Ã½ on the Monday of Sports Day. ÌýStudents from grade 1 to grade 5 worked together in their house teams to complete various feats of strength, speed, and athleticism. ÌýThere were some disappointing defeats, but also moments of pride where students were able to pull together and accomplish something great. ÌýAt the end of the day, everyone had a great time.

Measurement in Grade 4
Mr. Snider
Head of Primary and Grade 4A Homeroom Teacher
In math, class 4A has been exploring measurement. The textbook focuses on standard metric measurements (meters, grams, and liters), converting between units, and solving problems with these measurements. In order to enrich the unit, class 4A has been doing hands-on stations using the standard metric measurements, but then have gone way beyond this. The class has been using a wide variety of tools and instruments to measure all sorts of things, including temperature, humidity, decibel levels around the school, water purity using a TDS meter, water density, and volume with a variety of tools. The idea behind the stations is for students to learn all the different ways measurement affects and influences our lives, while having fun doing so.

Reading Olympics 2018
Mr. Steve – Grade 4B Homeroom Teacher
The primary school has been promoting March as our month of reading in an event called the Reading Olympics. Students were engaged with meaningful reading opportunities all month long to support a love for reading and to encourage more reading among students. For the first weekly event, students wore shirts with words and were instructed to ‘Read My Shirt’. Students also participated inÌýa Relax and Read where students were invited to cozy up in the gymnasium with a blanket and pillow to enjoy their favorite book. Other events included a bookmark designing competition, a used book sale, an author workshop and a big Raz Kids challenge where grades competed to see who could read the most at home. What a fullyÌý²ú´Ç´Ç°ì±ð»åÌýmonth of events! A huge congratulations to the following students for their win in the RAZ Kids reading competition as well as the bookmark competition.

¿Û¿Û´«Ã½s celebrates and promotes literacy in our young learners in “March Reading Month” every year. In order to kick off the event, we read the whole school book, “Rosie Run” that our students wrote collectively last year.Ìý This year, we are currently writing another whole school book and hope to finish in the next few days. This is a great way for our young learners to cooperatively write a book!

IMG_4706

IMG_4716

This year we had many exciting events at ¿Û¿Û´«Ã½ including pajama day accompanied by our whole school read, book character dress up day, poem in your pocket, a poetry slam, guest readers in our classes, a school visit from Jose Ortega, the illustrator of “Leo’s Pet Bug”, reading buddies, and a reader’s theater by On Nut high school students and Wells Bang Na’s Parent Teacher Organization.

IMG_5606

Pajama Day and Whole School Read

Our early years and primary students enjoyed our whole school read and pajama day. Our students snuggled up with their favorite blanket or stuffed animal in our primary gymnasium and read together. ÌýThe purpose of silent sustained reading is to promote reading by allowing children to read books they are interested in, increase vocabulary and comprehension, and improve writing skills.Ìý Our primary students also engage in silent sustained reading in their classrooms.

IMG_5666

Book Character Dress Up Day

For book character dress up day, our students came to school as a book character of their choice. ÌýThe kids loved parading around school dressed as their favorite characters and our teachers and staff had a great time as well. The goal of character book day is to promote reading.Ìý Research suggests that children who read for pleasure are more likely to be successful students.Ìý Wells encourages our young learners to read for enjoyment every day!

Poem in Your Pocket and Poetry Slam

Our students from kindergarten three to grade 3, we had a poetry writing session, shared our poems for our “poem in your pocket” activity and had a poetry slam.Ìý Our students were able to get up in front of their friends and perform their poem. The kids did a wonderful job presenting their poems while building their presenting skills, stage presence and poise.Ìý Poetry is a wonderful medium for our kids to write as it does not have prescribed rules and our young writers can be as creative.Ìý Reading poetry is a great way for reluctant readers to build their confidence.

Visiting Illustrator

Mr. Jose Ortega, the illustrator of “Leo’s Pet Bug” came to talk about his book with our students on March 26th. He spoke about the importance of reviewing and revising characters when illustrating a book. He walked our children through the process of creating a storyboard and gave our students time to create their own.Ìý He also signed the book that he wrote for our students!

IMG_6001

Read Alouds

In our early years classrooms, our teachers welcomed parents as guest readers in various languages in order for our kids to understand that books can be written in any language, not just English or Thai. Grade 2 and K1 classes joined together once a week for the month for our reading buddies program.Ìý The grade 2 kids read to the younger children which helps to build oral reading fluency and once again, confidence. The younger kids enjoyed listening to our primary students and realized how good they will become at reading if they practice daily.

20180306_092839

Reader’s Theater

The culmination of our reading month was a reader’s theater put on by Wells On Nut high school students and Wells Bang Na Parent Teacher Organization (PTO).Ìý Our high school students showcased three books and did a wonderful job reading on stage. Our PTO took a different approach and recorded their voices and acted out the play. Wells Bang Na had no idea of the acting skills that our parents and our high school students possess! The reader’s theaters were amazing and the perfect way to end our reading month!

The Science Ìýof ÌýSleepÌýandÌýLearningÌýÌý
Mr.Snider
Head Primary School Teacher and Grade 4AÌýHomeroom Teacher

All parents know that good sleep is important for their child’s health. This knowledge can easily be forgotten,Ìýthough, in our busy modern lifestyles. Good sleep, both of our own and that of our children, is often one of the first things to be neglected when we have too much to do. Recent scientific research is discovering that quality sleep is crucial to our overall physical,Ìýmental, and emotional health. For children, quality sleep may mean the difference between normal and abnormal development and learning.ÌýParents need to take sleep very seriously.ÌýMany people know that good sleep is necessary for our bodies and brains to rest and reset. Scientists are now discovering that sleep is needed for much more than just rest. It is during sleep that our brains sort through the day’s experiences and record the important ones as new memories. Sleep is thus essential to learning. Sleep is also when our brains rid themselves of waste chemicals. ÌýHuman growth hormone, which is crucial to a child’s physical development, is primary released during sleep.

Inadequate sleep has been linked to numerous physical and mental health issues. People who don’t sleep enough have a higher risk of obesity, diabetes, and depression. Inadequate sleep can lead to attention hyperactivity issues in children. Children who don’t sleep enough have difficulty regulating their emotions properly, which can lead to problems in many aspects of their lives. And, as any teacher can tell you, sleep deprived children simply don’t learn as well.

The National Sleep Foundation in the United States offers the following science-based recommendations for how much children should sleep. Preschoolers should get between 10 and 13 hours of sleep per day, children between the ages of 6 to 13 should get 9 to 11 hours of sleep per day, and teenagers should get 8 to 10 hours a day.

Besides getting enough sleep, children and parents should also practice good “sleep hygiene” to make getting to sleep easier. Electronics and televisions should be removed from the bedroom. Because the blue light emitted from the electronic devices interferes with the brains’ ability to fall asleep, children should not use any screens (tablets, phones, computers, TVs) at least 30 minutes before bed. Practices like meditation and mindfulness can help prepare children fro bedtime. Snacks before bedtime should be high protein (nuts, unsweetened yogurt, peanut butter, cheese and crackers) instead of high sugar. Finally, form a regular bedtime routine and stick to it.

Good sleep and good learning go hand in hand. Make getting good sleep a priority for both your children and yourself. More information about the importance of sleep can be found at https://sleepfoundation.org.Ìý

ÌýWhy would a hawk move to New York? What do plants eat? Where do dead leaves go?
These were a few of the inquiries that the fifth graders investigated over the past few weeks. TheseÌýinquiries took us on a tour of the web of life as we explored a handful of different ecosystems and how energy travels through each of them. In our mold terrariums, students observed how fungi decompose matter. Decomposers, they learned, play an important part in the web of life. They break down matter so that it can be recycled, and the energy cycle can start all over again.

Grade 3 classes have been working on the theme questions – What is Light? How Does Electricity Work? To align their project with their current theme, Grade 3 students created and performed a shadow puppet show this week. Students worked in groups and came up with various kinds of play. The plays ranged from fantasy to horror. The students worked hard to overcome their differences in creativity, organization, and teamwork to support each other throughout the process. Furthermore, students practiced different ways to maneuver the puppets against the light to create shadows which will collaborate with their story. It was a pleasure to watch such entertaining and creative plays. Well done Grade 3!

Mr. Will
Grade 5AÌýHomeroom Teacher
On September 15th, Grade 5 took their first ever field trip to Bangkok’s Metro Forest. This man-made forest was designed as an outdoor exhibition space that encourages environmental awareness. The students were taught about local forest ecology, and how Bangkok has beenÌýaffected by deforestation. After the students learned how the forest was intended to take on its own ecosystem, based on local tree species, the students walked through the forest on an elevated walkway. They had a guided tour through the forest and saw everything up and close, from up high. The fresh air and shade felt a world away from Sukhumvit Road!
