The Wells IB Literature and Performance course, one of our Group 1 hybrid language offerings as part of the IB Diploma Programme, recently got the opportunity to study with an exciting guest teacher, Ms.听Aarti Saikia, a professionally trained ballet, classical Indian, and Spanish flamenco dancer with years of experience working for the United Nations concerning human rights in several countries听including Italy, India, and Thailand. Ms. Saikia, also a听poet, led workshops with both IB Year 1 and Year 2 students wherein students experienced what it is to dramatize poetry through dramatic spoken word, and helped the classes craft improvised听poems of their own.
As part of the activity, Ms. Saikia shared how “Creative Expressionist” work can help heal through the arts and the creative process, including poetry and dance in expressive, improvised, and integrated styles–an endeavor she strives to use to improve the lives of those in the communities she works with. Students in each workshop were given unique insight into how the arts–especially poetry–can have a positive impact on the lives of those in our society.
Wells thanks Ms. Saikia for volunteering to share these unique skills and experiences!

CENTRAL WORLD 鈥 扣扣传媒 students continued their winning ways at the 3rd annual Asia Books Readers’ Theatre competition. This year, due to the floods, the final round was postponed two months. However, the chosen date was quite appropriate as it coincided with Thailand鈥檚 celebration of Children鈥檚 Day. And, despite only having a short week after Christmas Break to polish up their performances, our young Seahawks captured 1st Place in Division 4 (International Schools, ages 14 & up) and 2nd Place in Division 3 (International Schools, ages 13 & below). With more than 15 teams in each division, two Wells teams passed the preliminary round to make it to the final round held on Sunday, January 15.

In the older division, the Wells team comprised three returning members from last year鈥檚 championship team as well as two newcomers. Veterans Sonya Chawla (Gr. 10), Natalya Silva (Gr. 9), and Akhil Shanishetti (Gr. 9) were joined by Peter Choi (Gr. 8) and Andy Shin (Gr. 8) to form this year鈥檚 team, performing their rendition of The Talent Show by Jo Hodgkinson. Despite significant improvements in the competition, experience and strong theatrical training proved to be the game changer as Wells once again ended up at the top. An older, but less experienced team from RAIS came in 2nd.

In the younger division, the team of Cindy Shin (Gr. 6), Pavi Tak (Gr. 6) , Darshan Giri Naganathan (Gr. 6), and Asen Liu (Gr. 7) presented their theatrical rendition of the children鈥檚 picture book What the Ladybird Heard by Julia Donaldson. As defending champions from last year鈥檚 competition, the young Wells team faced tough competition with familiar foes hailing from Bangkok Patana. When the dust settled, Bangkok Patana, which placed 3rd last year, came up on top, with Wells placing 2nd. A team from Satit Kaset Bilingual School ended up in 3rd.

This is the third year that Wells has participated in the Asia Books competition, and the level of performances from all competitors continues to improve dramatically. Mr. Rhys Griffith, the head of Wells鈥 Fine Arts Department, and master of the theatrical arts, has taken charge of this event since Wells first entered the competition over two years ago.

Congratulations to all participants! More photos of the event can be seen on our official .

SIAM DISCOVERY 鈥 扣扣传媒 made a clean sweep as students captured 1st place in both the Primary School Division and Secondary School Division at the 2nd Annual Asia Books Readers’ Theatre Competition. In the Primary Division, the 鈥淔ive Yellow Rocks鈥 team of Cindy, Pavi, Charvi, Darshan and Samuel went up against six other finalist teams from various international schools and bilingual programs, presenting their theatrical rendition of the children鈥檚 picture book That Rabbit Belongs to Emily Brown by Cressida Cowell. The young Wells team took 1st place over the 2nd place team from Satit Kaset Bilingual School and the 3rd place team from Bangkok Pattana.

In the Secondary Division, two teams from Wells were selected to compete in the final round. However, in the end it was the 鈥淩oller Coaster Readers鈥 team of Sonya, Natalya, Bhagyasre and Akhil that captured the top prize with their rendition of The Gruffalo鈥檚 Child, based on the classic children鈥檚 Gruffalo series by Julia Donaldson. QSNCC, Klong Toey 鈥 After a busy day of performances, Wells added to its growing list of onstage achievements by capturing FIRST PLACE (along with a new IPHONE 4 worth B28,000!) at the Thailand International Education Expo (TIEE) Karaoke Singing Competition held on Saturday at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center. Akhil Shanishetti, Grade 8, took the stage with his rendition of 鈥淚鈥檓 Yours鈥 by Jason Mraz, impressing the judges with his showmanship and strong stage presence. Despite a number of impressive performances by 16 other singers, hailing from international schools across Bangkok, Akhil scored just enough points to edge out the competition.

Also taking the stage along with Akhil were Katria Clark (Gr. 7), Jaspriya Narula (Gr. 9), and Amira Lukens (Gr. 9).

Earlier in the day, Wells High School Glee Club also performed at the TIEE, then quickly headed to the IT Gateway at Siam Square for another performance sponsored by the Superstar Academy. The Glee Club opened their performance with a rendition of the pop song 鈥淒ynamite鈥 followed by the inspirational ballad 鈥淭he Climb,鈥 featuring soloist Marin Takahashi (Gr. 9).

BANGKOK 鈥 July 18 Update: In a fortunate twist of fate, recent Wells graduate Nattawat 鈥淭on鈥 Deewongkij (喔撪副喔愢抚喔编笗喔 鈥溹笗喙夃笝鈥 喔斷傅喔о竾喔佮复喔) received a call from the producers of last week Wednesday. The wildly popular Thai reality TV show, in its 7th season, recently has had to face an awkward situation when one of its twelve finalists, after posting unflattering remarks about Thailand鈥檚 Prime Minister on Facebook, was forced to quit the show. This opened the door for Ton to replace him as one of the six male finalists.

One month ago, Ton passed the initial hurdles to be named to the top 100 hopefuls. Two weeks ago, after living in the AF House under 24-hour surveillance, Ton made it through two more rounds, into the top 50 and down to the top 25, before being knocked off at the very end. This past Saturday night, at the first concert featuring the AF7 finalists, it was announced that a replacement would be joining the AF House the very next day. Then, a visibly excited Ton made his grand entrance on TV at 9:35pm Sunday evening, with hugs from the other eleven AF7 finalists welcoming him.

Following a week of training, viewable 24-hours-a-day on True Channel 60, Ton will perform in his first AF concert Saturday evening, July 24, televised on True Channel 7 live from Muang Thon Thani鈥檚 Thunderdome. Fans around the country will then have the opportunity to vote via SMS for their favorite AF7 finalist.

On behalf of the entire 扣扣传媒 community, we would like to congratulate Ton for representing us well. We encourage everyone to tune in this Saturday and, if so inclined, show support for our very own superstar by texting in your votes for lucky #13. Additionally, feel free to upload pictures, comments and videos on Ton’s to increase his “Fan Power” and show him the support of the Wells community.

Once again, CONGRATULATIONS TON 鈥 WE鈥橰E ALL ROOTING FOR YOU!!!

By: Mr. Philip Murray, Choir Director & Fine Arts Department Head

Once again the musical talent of Wells students was on public display at the Siam Paragon Christmas Carol Competition on November 21st.听 This year鈥檚 competition was for students in primary and middle schools, and Wells students from both Thong Lor and On Nut campuses competed.

This was a very special experience for many of our Primary students, as it was the first time that they had the experience to sing in a choir and participate in a choir competition.

The On Nut Choir was on form, singing two very different songs 鈥 the last one of which had students singing while working on an assembly line, packing toys into boxes and wishing the crowd a Merry Christmas at the end of the performance.听 While choirs from the On Nut campus have performed publicly before, this was the first time that students from their Primary School were involved.听 It was also a 鈥渕ilestone鈥 performance for students from the Thong Lor Campus, as it was the first public performance by their choir!听 Students were involved in every aspect of their performance 鈥 from singing to accompanying to even conducting the choir itself! They all did a great job and should be proud of themselves!

Both choirs did extremely well and while we didn鈥檛 come in first, everyone was happy and excited to have had the opportunity to perform for the crowds at Siam Paragon.

Be sure to catch future musical performances by Wells students, including on Thursday Dec. 3 at the Emporium and Sunday, January 9th at Central World.
