Parenting Styles Workshop | Wells Thong Lo Campus

On Friday 8th March, Wells Thong Lo hosted a ‘Parenting Styles’ workshop, welcoming parents of children across all ages; from nursery students, that are filled with wonder about the world around them through to high school students, where the parents are challenged with the task of ensuring that curiosity and wonder remains as their child makes life changing decisions about their future. No matter what age the child is, parenting is an art that develops with time and experience, changing form with each individual child.

Parenting Workshop, Wells Thong Lo

Ms. Camarin, Wells Early years and Primary School counselor, discussed the challenges faced in 21st century parenting and the different parenting styles that are adopted; authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, orneglectful. Authoritative has been highlighted in many studies as the most effective style; whereby effort is put into creating and maintaininga positive relationship with the child, reasoning is given for rules that are enforced with given consequences, whilst simultaneously taking the child’s feelings into consideration. Although this style is favoured, every child and every familial background is different and should be factored in, potentially changing the dynamic and what action or style is most suitable. At times, good parents cross multiple styles, adapting to their child and situation.

Parenting Workshop, Wells Thong Lo

Through open discussion, Wells leadership, teachers and Ms. Camarin discussed problems faced today by parents and teachers alike. There is a direct relationship between home and school, where parents and teachers are working towards the same or similar goals, with the child’s welfare and development at the heart of decision making. We recognize, address and appreciate the challenges faced by parents and are here to support and guide where we can. We value our students, families and aim to continuously build a stronger community.
Parenting Workshop, Wells Thong Lo
Thanks to all that attended and your valued input, and to Ms. Camarin and co for your tips and insight. Watch this space for more exciting workshops coming soon. We welcome input from our parents about future workshops. Please email any thoughts or ideas over to gona@wells-school.com.

Times Around the World
Mr. David – Grade 2A Homeroom Teacher

Recently we have been studying time in grade two. Using the mechanical gear clocks students have been exploring how the hands move around the clock face. Each student has make their own paper plate clocks showing times to the hour, quarter hour, half hour, and quarter till. We also practiced telling time to five minute increments. When problem solving students worked with class and train schedules to determine when future events will happen. We then decided to study time for International Day! Each student selected a country and city that they are interested in. On March 6th at 2:30 P.M. we looked up the time and date for each of those cities. We discovered that most places had a different time and that some places where just waking up. We also saw that some cities, such as Seattle, were still March 5th!

Primary School Sports Day 2018
Ms. Dana – Grade 5A Homeroom Teacher

Who will run the fastest? Who will pull the hardest? Who will balance the longest? These were the questions buzzing around ۿ۴ý on the Monday of Sports Day. Students from grade 1 to grade 5 worked together in their house teams to complete various feats of strength, speed, and athleticism. There were some disappointing defeats, but also moments of pride where students were able to pull together and accomplish something great. At the end of the day, everyone had a great time.

Measurement in Grade 4
Mr. Snider
Head of Primary and Grade 4A Homeroom Teacher
In math, class 4A has been exploring measurement. The textbook focuses on standard metric measurements (meters, grams, and liters), converting between units, and solving problems with these measurements. In order to enrich the unit, class 4A has been doing hands-on stations using the standard metric measurements, but then have gone way beyond this. The class has been using a wide variety of tools and instruments to measure all sorts of things, including temperature, humidity, decibel levels around the school, water purity using a TDS meter, water density, and volume with a variety of tools. The idea behind the stations is for students to learn all the different ways measurement affects and influences our lives, while having fun doing so.

Reading Olympics 2018
Mr. Steve – Grade 4B Homeroom Teacher
The primary school has been promoting March as our month of reading in an event called the Reading Olympics. Students were engaged with meaningful reading opportunities all month long to support a love for reading and to encourage more reading among students. For the first weekly event, students wore shirts with words and were instructed to ‘Read My Shirt’. Students also participated ina Relax and Read where students were invited to cozy up in the gymnasium with a blanket and pillow to enjoy their favorite book. Other events included a bookmark designing competition, a used book sale, an author workshop and a big Raz Kids challenge where grades competed to see who could read the most at home. What a fullyǴǰmonth of events! A huge congratulations to the following students for their win in the RAZ Kids reading competition as well as the bookmark competition.

Every month, Wells Thonglor holds forums with between parents and school administrators to discuss any pertinent matters and to receive concerns in an open manner.

At April’s Morning Coffee Talk, apart from the discussion on extra languages at Wells 51 (facilitated by headmaster Mr Lawrie), several issues were brought up during a Question and Answer forum.

An integral part of improving communication between school and parents is keeping issues transparent and open for discussion so that any critique is given/taken in a positive and constructive manner, and not to tear down and criticize.

As such, we sincerely thank the parents who attended April 5th’s Morning Coffee Talk and offered their ideas, opinions and suggestions constructively! We appreciate your participation and optimistic attitudes.

We hope to see more parents at the next Morning Coffee Talk! :)

ۿ۴ý (Thong Lor Campus) was turned into a place of feasting and celebration on Friday, September 18, 2009 during its first ever Parent-Teacher Mixer evening. The event was attended by more than 125 visitors, consisting of parents and friends, accompanied by children of all ages. There were also parents and visitors from kindergartens around the Sukhumvit area.

The atmosphere was lively and filled with activities that allowed parents the opportunity to get closer to the school, its educational philosophy, operational practices, and more importantly, dedicated staff. Parents also had the golden opportunity of interacting with other parents. The potluck was a big success as well – a variety of eastern and western dishes were brought in by parents and staff – there was ample food for everyone.

The event began with a short speech by the headmaster who emphasized that the school’s success depends on a healthy home-school relationship. He also stated that the best way to strengthen this relationship is to spend time with each other through discussions about children’s education, as well as understanding and moving toward the accomplishment of a collective vision that works for all. Since time immemorial, eating together has been one of the most effective ways to forge and maintain positive relationship with people. This is the reason why the school chose to organize such an event.

Many parents approached school staff toward the end of the program and expressed their gratitude for the event. The evening was immensely appreciated by all. Parents also requested for more such activities to enable and encourage them to actively participate in their children’s academic/schooling experiences. Having this goal met, it is clear that the Parent-Teacher Mixer was indeed a grand success!

Parent Orientation: Day 1 (August 20, 2009) – Thong Lor campus

Parents often wonder what kind of learning takes place in the classroom. They are eager to understand the personality of teachers, the philosophy behind teaching styles, and the rationale for covering certain types of contents. In short, parents appreciate it when the school opens its doors for them to come in, learn about, and understand how their children are educated.

Understanding this important need of parents, the school arranged for a different kind of parent orientation this year. After giving a brief update on new developments (WASC accreditation, emphasis on strengthening English language proficiency of students, commitment to “making Thailand our classroom,” etc.), parents were given ample time to interact with their homeroom teachers to gain insight into teaching and learning that go on in their children’s classes.

Teachers took this opportunity to share information (with parents) pertaining to what they teach, how they teach, how they assess learning, what classroom management techniques are used, etc. Both parties found the interaction to be valuable as they developed a better understanding of each other. It was also a good chance for teachers and parents to clarify expectations and bridge the gaps that exist in their definition/philosophy of education. It is hoped that this session would open more doors of opportunities for teachers and parents to work closely together for children’s well-being and academic success.

The school is committed to continue working with parents to ensure the success of every student. As the headmaster reiterated in his speech to parents, “thinking is the highest form of learning…” and ۿ۴ý works toward equipping its students with creative and critical thinking skills for now and future.
