K2 students at 扣扣传媒, Bang Na inquired about how we organize ourselves in our second unit. Our young explorers focused on systems that link communities and connect people. In this unit, they learned about the different roles people have in communities and explored how their individual roles function. Throughout our learning, our students developed a sense of responsibility and gained knowledge about how systems work in the real world. To make this connection real, our students and teachers decided to have a community role-play day.

The first part of our community helper day was to make connections with our school community. The students wanted to know how they could help. Our students worked together and held a community car wash day. It was a fun learning experience for our young learners, as they were able to make a tangible contribution to our school community, connect with the understanding of our unit, and learn practical skills.聽

The second part was a role-play activity where our students explored different roles members of the society play. They showed interest in several community roles, prompting these scenarios in our classroom setting. The students showed wonderful understanding about how communities are networks that need to work together in order to function well.

This experience was a valuable opportunity for our K2 students to understand this importance of community, whilst fostering creativity, social skills, and cooperation. It allowed them to explore community roles through hands-on experiences and play, making the concept come alive. By participating in this activity, students gained a deeper appreciation for those who serve their community and the importance of working together for the greater good.

The Grade 5 students from Wells Bang Na had an incredible visit to the Sustainability Expo 2023 this week. With the theme 鈥淕ood Balance, Better World鈥, the exhibition used the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to bring together charities, foundations and organizations from around Thailand.

For Grade 5, this was a unique opportunity to see a real expo that aimed to make the world a better place – something that they will also be doing in May, when they stage their PYP Exhibition. Using their devices, students took videos, photos, notes and recordings that will inspire their own booths, art installations and action projects throughout the year.

Throughout the visit, students explored different zones, which included an interactive kids鈥 zone, a market hall with sustainable goods, exhibition halls themed around 鈥淏etter Me鈥, 鈥淏etter Living鈥, 鈥淏etter Community鈥 and 鈥淏etter World鈥 and more. They visited booths by national and international organizations such as the United Nations and the Thailand Forestry Department.

Not only did they see inspirational art and interactive activities, but they also had chance to speak to experts in their chosen fields. Our Gender Equality group spent some time connecting with Khun Jay from the UNDP, and they also got the chance to hear a brief introduction by the UNHCR, which links to their current inquiry into migration.

At Wells Bang Na, we look forward to seeing how this field trip inspires their inquiries and the exhibition process, and we look forward to sharing further learning with you over the coming year.

Wells Bang Na students have been all around town visiting a variety of new places. Our teachers and students are thrilled to be able to learn off campus as it adds dimension to each unit of inquiry. Read all about our adventures at the new聽 places we visited!

Under the Stars with Grade 3 – Planetarium

The students thoroughly enjoyed the show at the planetarium, but they found the most joy in the science center. They were fascinated by the preserved reptiles, as well as the dinosaur section. They learnt about the planets, but also the myriad of constellations and their names. They also found out more about the northern lights and how they are formed. The Grade 3 students聽 have a deeper understanding of just how large the universe is! While we know many things about it, there is still so much more to discover.

Modern Art Fans, Grade 4 – Bangkok Art and Culture Center

Grade 4 enjoyed their visit to BACC. We are studying structures in our current unit and focusing on functionality and aesthetics. The students loved walking around looking at the different art exhibitions and really admired the design of the building. They learned that art can be interpreted in many different ways and that they each have their own unique style and taste in what they like. They also learned that it is ok to have a difference of opinion in what you find to be special or beautiful. The Bangkok Art and Cultural Center was a great place to visit and the class was able to make many connections between our unit on structures with their visit to the museum.

Active Learning at the Children鈥檚 Discovery Museum with K3

The K3 field trip to the Children鈥檚 Discovery Museum was an exceptional learning experience. The students had a great time exploring interactive and hands-on activities. K3 loved looking at different exhibits, and engaging with the world beyond our campus. One highlight was the interactive vegetable garden. Students enjoyed a coloring activity and watched their vegetables come to life in the interactive garden. Next, we visited the 鈥楧ino Detective鈥 park, which was the pinnacle of the trip for everyone. Most K3 students are highly interested in dinosaurs, so this was a popular spot.聽 K3 learned about the dinosaurs and participated in an outdoor fossil dig. Students were given tools to hunt for dinosaur fossils in the sand. After the fossil dig, the students enjoyed watching a short 4D cartoon. After hours of fresh and exciting learning experiences, the students had an opportunity to let off some energy in the outdoor activity zone, exploring a jungle adventure climbing frame and tree house and playing with slides, a tunnel, nets, and a suspension bridge. It was an exciting day for K3 and provided many opportunities for learning and reflection.

Grade 2 – The Coin Museum

Grade 2鈥檚 visit to The Coin Museum was a huge success. This exhibition, run by the Treasury Department, showed the history of currency from early trade through to mobile banking. Students particularly enjoyed embossing and stamping designs from around the world, and using interactive displays to learn about alloys used in coin manufacture. A highlight for the whole class was the 4D presentation at the start of the tour, which featured an artificial cave with moving paintings and a crackling campfire. Students came away with an increased appreciation of currency as an art form, considering how it expresses the cultures of those who create it. Money gives value to goods and services, but it also reflects the values of the people who use it.

Grade 1 – Museum Siam聽

Grade 1 had a great time during the field trip to Museum Siam.聽 Students were fascinated by the clever displays that in many cases involved hands-on activities to keep them engaged. Several elements from this trip tied directly into our current unit.聽 We saw more traditional toys that kids have played with in the past, rather than using iPads and video game systems.聽 Lithograph toys showed a contrast to what kids typically play with today.聽 Students were able to sit in more traditional desks and read old Thai textbooks and maps.聽 They saw old music boxes with CDs and cassette tapes.聽 Large cell phones, that never knew of the internet, were also on display.聽 It was a fun and educational adventure for all!

A father is the best example of a real-life hero. In Thailand, we celebrate Father’s Day every year on December 5th. On this day, we show our respect and gratitude to our father. At 扣扣传媒, we celebrate Father鈥檚 day in remembrance of our beloved King Bhumibol. The students of Wells Bang Na created personalized cards for their fathers. The Thai department and Music teachers created an exhibition about the wonderful things our King contributed to our lives, including music! In memory of King Bhumibol, the music teachers played songs that King Rama 9 composed, such as聽 鈥淟ove at 鈥淪undown鈥, 鈥淐andlelight鈥, 鈥淪till In My Mind鈥, 鈥淪weet Words鈥, and” Falling Rain鈥. Our students were very interested in the songs and impressed by King鈥檚 talent. After the exhibition, our students reflected on what they learned from the presentation. When asked how they would celebrate their fathers at home, many promised to tell them how important they are to them. Happy Father鈥檚 Day!聽

Written By Joshua Robertson, Grade 3 Homeroom Teacher

The Grade 3 students of Wells Bang Na Campus explored their first Unit Of Inquiry (UOI) over the past 6 weeks. Through delicate dissection and careful questioning, they managed to find out more than expected. They discovered something surprising about every one of us.

The class began their exploration with a gallery walk. They saw images of people both familiar and alien. And as inquiring minds are inclined to do, they found themselves asking questions. Who were these people before them and why were they important? Where did they come from? What were they known for? Were they walking among us or already at rest? What do they all have in common? With their minds awash with questions, it was time to unpack the central idea: Heroes are a reflection of our beliefs and values.聽

Through this process of unpacking, the grade 3鈥檚 clarified the central idea. The heroes were not superheroes. They were not exploring the characters of fiction, but ordinary, everyday people. With questions yet unanswered, they set about researching the people pasted to the walls around them. Brandishing iPads, books, and encyclopedias, they began researching. Some chose to learn more about familiar faces, while others explored the unknown. They were tasked with organizing their research into mind maps. Afterwards, the students created Seesaw posts to share what they had learned about their heroes. And while this activity excited the grade 3鈥檚, they weren鈥檛 finished, yet. More questions arose and, with it, the need to go further. Ideas were forming, but not yet clear.聽

What is a Hero?

While furthering their research, the students discovered something, or rather, someone. A man by the name of Salman Kunan. Mr. Kunan was of particular interest to everyone in the class. His heroic actions were not known around the world. He wasn鈥檛 Martin Luther King or Amelia Earhart. He was a local hero. But what did he do to have his name in Thai newspapers across the nation? To find out, they watched a documentary called The Cave. They learned that Mr. Kunan lost his life while helping to save the 12 boys trapped in Tham Luang cave. The students learned about Mr. Kunan’s death and they were impacted by the idea that this person could be someone that they knew. There was something special about Mr. Kunan鈥檚 story. He was someone they might have passed in a shopping mall or seen on the BTS. They came to realise that heroes are everywhere. They are not just present at momentous junctions in history, but also in everyday life and everyday situations.聽聽

With Mr. Kunan in mind, the students began to wonder if there might be other heroes whose actions were not to be found in history books. Young heroes tackling more current issues, both great and small. They continued their research with a renewed intensity. The grade 3s discovered many young heroes and connections with their own lives and experiences. It was after this foray into the world of young heroes that the students began thinking of taking action. Prince wanted to advocate for the endangered sea otter through the creation of an exciting comic book. Piper, Ete, and Tua wanted to inform others and prepared a presentation on ethical meat and farming to share with the grade 4s. Aadhya, Alina, Mook, and Vince put together an informative book to create awareness about the importance of recycling. Maya and Sun created a series of posters to share what they had learned about the PAWSBangkok foundation.聽

Save the Earth Skye Malik

What this magnificent group of students discovered through their journey was that everybody could be a hero. Our actions, big or small, can have an impact on the world around us. By striving to be knowledgeable and caring thinkers, we can change the world together, one action at a time.聽
