Honesty Matters: Best Practices for Wells International Middle School Students

The middle school students at ۿ۴ý Chonburi arrived at school early on the Saturday morning of January 22nd. Our middle school teachers held a one-day workshop on academic integrity, and most of our students attended. The aim was to foster honesty and ethical behavior in the students’ research and academic writing.

Paraphrasing Instead of Plagiarism

The workshop was divided into various components, including plagiarism, citations and referencing, time management, and digital citizenship, and the students were eager to get started. Firstly, our students discussed our school’s academic integrity policy and unpacked what it focused on. The students analyzed the forms of plagiarism and what the consequences are. Then, they learned about and practiced how to paraphrase.

Academic integrity

Finding References

After a break, the students delved into citations and referencing research. These techniques are valuable for future research and academic writing. Our middle school students are now better equipped to write quality papers. They are more prepared for their path to university.

Academic integrity

Digital Citizenship and Social Media

Lastly, our students spent their last hour solving scenarios about digital citizenship. Our students learned about keeping their information safe and private, being kind online and on social media, and how to protect themselves from the dangers of social media.

Academic integrity

DzԳܲDz

By instilling the principles of academic integrity, we are laying the foundation for a future generation of leaders. These students will approach challenges with integrity, contribute ethically to society, and serve as role models for others. Initiatives like these contribute to a brighter and more principled future. We aim to foster academic integrity into our school culture to build principled and responsible citizens at ۿ۴ý – Chonburi.

Due to the current Covid-19 situation, the Wells Community has had to transition to distance learning for the past two months. Despite the challenge, our high school teachers and students quickly transitioned and made the most of the situation, continuing to deliver quality lessons to students and ensure the connection to school remained strong. Our teachers have become very creative with their pedagogical instruction and integration of technology. Likewise, our students are developing many of the twenty-first century skills essential for their present and futures, including creativity, collaboration, technology literacy, adaptability and critical thinking.

Here are some of the highlights of what has been happening in our virtual classrooms in high school:

Notable Student Work & Projects

Through their various subjects, students were given opportunities to develop both content knowledge, as well as their video editing skills, such as Ms. Viessa’s IB Psychology classes, Ms. Sandy’s IB Economics classes, and Ms. Farhana’s Algebra II classes. In IB Psychology, Ms. Viessa and the Grade 12 students also put together a ‘Speaker Series’, where professional guest speakers visited the class Google Meets to share their knowledge about Psychology and the real world, as the seniors prepare for their next phase of life after high school. As an example, Mr. Jeff Harry, motivational speaker from , talked about the importance of creativity and play in the process of working towards goals. The student projects and videos can be accessed by clicking in the following links:

Expression through the Arts

In Mr. Ren’s Grade 10 classes, students were given a platform to express their ideas about the current pandemic through creative artwork.

Digital Fun

In high school, we also made time for fun in the digital world. The Student Council organized a virtual sports day, where students competed in virtual rock-paper-scissors, chess, Kahoot!, and more. They also organized a Spirit Week to boost morale and add some extra fun to online learning. We have also been able to have some guest speakers join us to share with our students and keep them inspired during these times.

This trip encouraged students to step out of their comfort zones, opened their eyes to new cultures and experience, and taught them skills in independence, communication, and responsibility. They ended the trip with many valuable memories, experiences, and skills that will hopefully last them a lifetime.

Special appreciation goes out to Mrs. Lee, chairwoman, for organizing the trip and itinerary, and to the chaperones for taking care of the students throughout the trip.

Last week (November 13 – 17), the High School Student Council hosted Spirit Week 2017, a weekdedicated to raising school morale through conducting inter-class competitions accompanied with a set of activities. Each day had a theme, starting with Pajama Day on Monday.

The following days included Triplet Day and Disney Day, where students had to dress up and impersonate their favorite Disney character. Thursday’s theme was used to promote raising awareness for men’s health with Movember and mustache-themed class photos.

The final day of Spirit Week found students representing their class colors and graduating years. One could feel the unity and enthusiasm through the halls of Wells as students worked together to complete their daily photo and video challenges aligned with their ESLRs related to communication and ICT use.

A special thanks goesto the High School Student Council for organizing Spirit Week, Photography Club for capturing the moments, and to all those who participated and showed their school spirit!

From October 16th to 28th, 12 Wells students attended a university level International High School Engineering Camp. The event was graciously hosted by National Taiwan University. Throughout the two week experience, students received lectures and hands on experience in fields such as Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Ocean Engineering. Students constructed miniature versions of solar panel operated cars and built small wooden bridges and ships as part of their exposure to the fields.

Along with the university immersion experience, NTU also provided cultural tours for our students. Our Wells participants visited various locations and sights in Taipei and Yilan such as the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall and the National Center for Traditional Arts. Stay tuned for the next round of applications for this program if you are interested in an opportunity to learn more about National Taiwan University or the field of engineering.

Academic Program Updates

IB Diploma Programme

Class of 2018 — Welcome back to Year 2 of the IB Diploma Programme at WIS. Our students have had a chance to reflect on their first year of the program over the summer, and have come back refreshed and ready to take on the challenges for this final year. Please note the following:

  • CAS Portfolios for all of our HS students should be in progress. Ask your students to see where they are in their progress and see the requirements on the websites (linked below). Celebrate their achievements so far!
  • Each student is at different stages of their Extended Essay, often referred to as the EE. For this graduating class, the IB has introduced a new element, which includes a Research Reflection Space, where the students can reflect on their learning process throughout the essay. They will be working closely with their chosen supervisor throughout the semester for reflection and progress check up, and will require encouragement and support from home to ensure they can meet their own deadlines.
  • Important deadlines for the assessments in each of your students classes can be found in the . Please work with your students to write down these deadlines and support them as the deadlines approach. These deadlines are firm. If they are unable to manage the deadlines, they must arrange a meeting with their teacher and the IB Coordinator to reschedule at least one week in advance of the deadline.
  • May Examination Session 2018 registration:
-Opened Friday, September 15th, 2017. Students were given the Registration Form and a IB Candidate Consent Form to take home and complete with parents/guardians.

In the last month, students have settled into their respective IB courses and are getting to know their teachers and the new requirements of the IB DP. Students attended an introduction to CAS session, and some are excited and already starting to plan out their CAS projects. Their first CAS interviews will be taking place in September, where they will share their personal action plans and self-development goals. In the coming months, students will begin the process for their Extended Essay or EE. Student support teams have been established in our first class meeting where students were encouraged to work in these teams to identify their own strengths and their peer’s strengths throughout this first semester as well as developing their IB Learner Profile and the corresponding ESLRs.

We look forward to working with you and your students to guide them through the challenges, encourage them to learn from failures, and celebrate achievements throughout the course of this rigorous program. For more information and details, please visit our various websites and links below.

Introducing AP Capstone Program at Wells!

What does it take to prepare for success in universities in the US? Wells is excited to introduce this new program offered by the AP to give high-performing students an opportunity to explore their interests, culminating in the form of a high-level research paper.
