Last month, Grade 5 students from ۿ۴ý Bang Na were able to connect with students in Japan at Okinawa International School. They met in order to observe presentations of their PYP exhibition progress. Our students at WISBN are currently working on their own exhibition projects. Observing other students explain their planning, research, and organization process positively impacted our students. Jayvinn from grade 5 mentioned that, “This experience inspired me to think about my own exhibition project.”

Our students were able to connect with students in Japan using Zoom. This exchange took place during the last week of online learning in January, 2021. The ability to take a virtual field trip to another school is a positive aspects of online learning. Through observing the students in Okinawa, our grade 5 students and teachers gained clarity on how to improve their own projects. They also saw how to share the exhibition projects with the greater community.

Kanade (grade 5 students) reflected, “Previously, I was nervous about my own project. But now, I feel confident about it because I know what to expect.” After the meeting, we received positive feedback from the students and PYP coordinator in Okinawa. They appreciated the questions asked by our students. They felt that they were very strong inquirers and thinkers.

Looking forward, our students are more equipped and excited to share their exhibition projects. Annie said, “I know what I need to do to improve my project now. I can add more pictures and explain my work more clearly because I know what it’s like to be in the audience.” Hank thought, “This experience gave me some good ideas on what to present.”

ۿ۴ý Bang Na will invite members of the community to participate in the Grade 5 exhibition in May 2021.

Grade 5 Field Trip

On October 17th, 2019, the Grade 5 class took a field trip to the National Science Museum in Pathum Thani. On this trip we were able to visit 2 out of the 3 buildings; the Science Building and the Information Technology Building.

Grade 5 had already completed a unit on ecosystems and biodiversity, and had moved on to studying different forms of energy. Therefore, we saw many examples of lesson material we had encountered in the classroom throughout the Science building. There were numerous different hands-on activities and demonstrations that allowed students to interact with science in action. Some relevant experiments involved electrical energy, light and sound, which we have been covering in class. These experiments helped students complete their scavenger-hunt style worksheets they were given at the start of the day.
The highlight of this trip was the Information Technology building. There were so many fun experiences there, like Virtual Reality goggles, virtual pizza making, kinetic sand combined with VR technology, and drivers ed in a model car. However, the real favorite was the Clay Car Race. Students were able to design race cars out of clay and a computer would scan these race cars and create virtual versions of them. The students were then able to watch these cars race, and the winner was the car that was designed most aerodynamically. The students enjoyed this activity so much because they were able to create something with their hands and immediately have it replicated and tested on the virtual race track. Though not exactly in line with our current unit, I think this provided an excellent and enjoyable learning experience.
Overall, the students seemed to really enjoy their experience at the National Science Museum!grade-5-t

Implementing Agency by Russell Coffin, Grade 5 Teacher
Our grade 5 classroom has a different feel to it this week as instructors return from a professional development course that convened at NIST over the weekend of the 21st of September. One of the key takeaways from this professional development seminar was the importance of personal student agencyin the classroom. Agency is the idea that learners should have the capacity to act on their own environment, I.E. control.A small example of agency might be choosing their own seating arrangement, or deciding if they want to do their school work in pen or pencil. Grade 5 is experimentingwith very high-engagement forms of agency, such as letting the students give input on their daily timetable of units, or decide how they want to engage with a writing assignment.During a unit on problem solving skills, learners were asked how they wanted to tackle developing their problem solving skill set. As seen in the photographs attached, students had a wide variety of perspectives on what “problem solving” looked like for them. Two students worked on the whiteboard doing brain teasers. Two other students worked on building a stable tower. One student worked on lighting light bulbs with batteries and wires, while yet another student decided to solve a large and intimidating puzzle.
This sort of agency in the classrooms gives students an increased sense of ownership over both the activity at hand and the results of that learning module. Experiments in increased agency are positive so far, and we look forward to seeing how else our students can leave their personal mark on the instruction of the day.

Essential Agreement

The fifth grade decided to take their whole school essential agreement poster show on the road when they asked to make skits to teach their younger peers about the school-wide policies. This month, the fifth grade will visit each class in the primary building to present two short skits. The skits explained the whole school essential agreement in language that all different levels could understand. “Providing an example is a good way to teach them” said Jenny, one of the students participating in the project who took it upon herself to create a scoring rubric for the project. “This is the sort of thing I wish we could do more”, said Chris, another student involved in the project.
