Grade 2 students have been exploring the solar system unit – one of the most exciting units students always look forward to learn! This space unit involves a number of interactive activities and fun experiments.��

Students have shown a great interest in learning about the history of the universe, particularly about the discovery of the Milky Way galaxy and how the Sun and the Moon were formed. They researched facts and information about the inner planets, outer planets, and also the dwarf planets. They were captivated by the explosion of stars and the appearance of the Asteroid Belt and Kuiper Belt.

To complement our learning, students created the solar system model painting to make a visual representation of the planets in our solar system as well as other celestial bodies in space. They enjoyed using their artistic skills in painting the planets and sprinkling glitter all around to add the finishing touches. Everyone’s final project turned out spectacular!

As part of their STEAM activity, students were given a challenge to design a space station using recyclables. After studying the purpose of the International Space Station and how astronauts live there, each child got creative with their ideas while making sure to include the main components of a space station such as modules and solar panels.

Students’ desire to become an astronaut when they grow up was further expressed in their writing project where each student chose a planet or a celestial object which they imagined and explored in their writing. Everyone got really creative with their entertaining stories. What a fabulous month of learning it was in Grade 2!

Grade��2��students at Wells Bang Na got excited about their new inquiry into the system of money with a field trip to the Royal Thai Mint. This is where all coins in the Kingdom are made. It was interesting to see the process from beginning to finish of how baht are made. We saw the history of the process as well. We learned how bartering in ancient times led to our modern money systems.

This brought up lots of questions for our inquirers! It was a fun day for all!�� The field trip helped students get excited for this new unit of “How we Organize ourselves”.

The grade 2 class at Wells Bang Na inquired into patterns around us that help us to understand our world, such as night/day, seasons and moon phases. Ms. Ellie’s class became scientists as they conducted experiments��to observe��these patterns and took daily journals to see what patterns they could notice in the sun and moon.

Star gazing Sleepover

To conclude this unit and encourage students to become independent, the whole class stayed after school on Friday, the night of the full moon, to observe and reflect on what they had learned. Students got to use a telescope to look closer at the moon. They also used star apps to find constellations and did a lot of looking at the sky, noticing that Venus was the first star they could see. They also had pizza, played games and read books in a tent! It was a very fun night! The grade 2 students are still talking about how exciting it was to spend the night with their��friends!

Learning About Thai Culture

In Grade 2, students have been learning about the various traditions and cultures in our classroom.�� As a culminating activity we made an in-depth study of Thai culture by first reviewing what they already knew and would like to learn about traditional Thailand. We then took a field trip to the Bangkokian Museum to learn firsthand what traditional Thai homes, furniture, and household items looked like.

Students were intrigued by washbasins, old medicine cabinets, mosquito netting, black and white photographs, and much more.�� They described typewriters as, “printers where you must press the buttons yourself.” They saw old postal stamps and described them as, “the things you can get at 7-11”.

Application of Knowledge

Upon returning from the trip we compared these older technologies and traditions against what is seen today by completing a Venn diagram. Students showed that long ago people used candles for light whereas today electricity fills this need. Sewing machine and knitting needles were used to make and repair clothing, where today most clothing is purchased at the store. Along with these observations came many questions and impressions. Students weren’t sure how the old alarm clock worked and felt that traditional Thai wood furniture must be very uncomfortable. The trip was a great opportunity for students to experience and reflect on the ways Thailand has changed over the years.

At Wells Bang Na campus, the Grade 2 and 3 students spent six weeks engaged in a unit of inquiry about heroes. The students were interested in becoming more knowledgeable on how heroes are a reflection of people’s perspectives, beliefs and societal values. We worked on several different projects within this unit; including a personalized book about notable people who are heroes.�� The students created a culminating project of their own design. This final project, which included comic strips, video interviews, puppet shows and posters, not only communicated the life of their personal hero, but also tasked the students with responsibility. The students selected their medium, balanced their time effectively, and built their confidence.�� The students presented their projects to teachers and peers. Upon completion the students offered their reflections on the unit.

“I like this unit because we got to draw and write about our heroes. It was challenging to research new people, but I really enjoyed it. You don’t have to be perfect, but you can try your best to help people and that makes you a hero.”��said Jason, grade 2.

“I had a fun time building my own project, even though it wasn’t easy.” Jayvinn, grade 3.

The second graders of �ۿ۴�ý Bang Na explored an inquiry unit on space. The focus of the unit was observable patterns related to ��the earth, moon and sun. The unit fell under the theme�� “How the World Works”. As soon as the class heard we would be looking towards space for answers;�� they were full of excitement, ready to share, and eager to learn more.

Key Concepts

During this unit, we took time to wonder about the form, causation and function of the moon. These two key concepts helped us discuss and analyze the moon’s purpose. We also explored the effects it has on the earth, and possible uses of it. Interestingly, the students realized they didn’t know why the moon has phases throughout the month. To help explain this pattern, the class made a 3D model of the earth and moon, then used a lamp to represent the sun. The students considered how the movement and light interact to create the phenomenon of moon phases. Additionally, the class watched and logged the moon’s appearance each evening. Each day, the second graders were actively pursuing information and asking questions to explain the changes they observed.

Student Projects

Throughout the unit, the students created projects of their own design. Each student chose a topic that interested them personally. Some students made models of the solar system, one made an A-Z book with space related terms, while another researched important events in the history of space exploration. The second graders visited other classes from K2 to grade four, sharing their knowledge and explaining their visual aids. Not only was this a fun way to learn more about space, but it helped each student develop their communication and presentation skills.

Field Trip to the Planetarium

Towards the end of the unit, the class visited the Planetarium and Science Center for Education. The students were amazed while watching the constellations, planets, and stars in in motion. They were fascinated to finally see the sun, moon and Earth from space. The children left the theater wide-eyed. When we returned to school, the students wrote about their experience at the Planetarium. It was wonderful to read that they wanted to go back and learn even more!������

During the Planetarium presentation, we learned about constellations and how they change throughout the night. We were also treated to a video that talked about different types of telescopes and what they help us see.

Afterwards, we explored the various exhibits in the museum, including taking a walk on the moon and riding a spaceship. The students have really enjoyed the solar system unit and it was nice for us to have an opportunity to build on their knowledge in a fun yet educational environment.
