At Wells Bang Na, our young inquirers are learning that some of the most powerful lessons come directly from the people around them. Guest speakers and first-hand interviews give our students opportunities to explore their units of inquiry through real voices, real experiences, and real perspectives.

This week, our Grade 1 learners met with Mr. Pete, an international businessman and traveler, as part of their exploration into community and relationships. The children asked simple but meaningful questions, and through the conversation they came to understand that listening to others and being helpful are key parts of building and maintaining relationships.

Meanwhile, Grade 5 learners took their inquiries into the digital world by interviewing Ms. Sunny, a prominent Thai influencer. She offered an honest look at the opportunities and challenges of being a public figure online. Students were fascinated to learn how social media can inspire and connect but also how it requires careful choices to protect privacy and balance personal well-being. Her candid answers encouraged our learners to think critically about their own online presence and what it means to be responsible digital citizens.

Through these conversations, our students aren鈥檛 just hearing about ideas in theory鈥攖hey are engaging with experts, asking meaningful questions, and forming their own conclusions. It鈥檚 a reminder that learning is not confined to the classroom; it happens wherever curiosity meets experience.

This week, Grade 5 students from Wells Bang Na had the opportunity to volunteer with Bangkok Community Help鈥檚 water treatment project in Khlong Toei. Working alongside staff from BCH, as well as their partners from jBio, the students participated by treating water in the reservoir and handing out bottles of 鈥淓M Water鈥 to local residents. This special mixture of microorganisms is administered regularly and reduces the levels of E. coli and coliform bacteria in the water.

Here at Wells Bang Na, taking meaningful action in the community is an essential part of our curriculum. This field trip was a powerful example of how the Primary Years Programme (PYP) allows students to connect their inquiries to real-world action. By stepping outside the school and actively engaging with communities in need, our students not only deepened their understanding of the issues faced by the Khlong Toei community but also developed empathy, problem-solving skills, and a sense of global responsibility.

Mr. Friso from Bangkok Community Help commented, 鈥淚t is so important to get young people involved in community action. You all have the chance to go to a wonderful school like Wells and get a wonderful education. Now it is our responsibility to help the people around us, because we have been given the opportunities that allow us to do so.鈥

Nandu, who has been researching water and clean sanitation, was particularly excited to be part of this project.

鈥淥bviously, as part of my research, I knew that there were slums and poor communities in Bangkok,鈥 he reflected. 鈥淏ut I didn鈥檛 know about their water access or why it is like that. Today, I got to learn about the history of the community and why they don鈥檛 have clean water. And, most importantly, I got to make change and not just talk about it.鈥

Vince, who is inquiring into poverty in Thailand, added, 鈥淭here are so many different aspects to living in poverty. I was surprised that the Khlong Toei community is built on the Port Authority鈥檚 land and the people don鈥檛 own it. I was also surprised at how fast fires can spread there. I was happy to help Bangkok Community Help because they are making a real difference.鈥

Throughout their day, the Grade 5s interacted with local residents with maturity and respect, using all of their Thai skills to support their volunteer work. We sincerely hope that today鈥檚 work inspires further projects, volunteering, and fundraising, and that these students help to shape a better future for the communities around them.

Wells Bang Na recently hosted its first in-person PYP Exhibition, an event that highlights the creativity, critical thinking, and collaborative efforts of the Grade 5 students. This exhibition is the culminating event of the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) and a chance for the entire school community to celebrate the year-long inquiries that the students have explored.

The theme that Grade 5 chose for this year’s exhibition was “Change the World, Save the World,” reflecting the students’ dedication to making a positive impact on the planet. Each group of students chose their own global issue and found ways to take action in the community. The themes this year included gender equality, sustainable and responsible energy use, and protecting marine ecosystems.

Throughout the course of these extended projects, students undertook research that included speaking to experts in their respective fields. Groups were fortunate enough to speak to oceanographers from around the world, the Maltese commissioner for gender equality, and one group even had a video interview with a U.S Senator!

The resulting actions included a successful family fitness event at Nong Bon Park, a resource pack to support teaching in Grade 3, a YouTube channel, and collecting pledges from visitors. Each group also wrote letters to decision-makers in Thailand and abroad to encourage change on a national and international scale.

During the exhibition week, students displayed their research and action projects, alongside interactive elements, artworks and creative performances. The students also presented elements in Thai and Mandarin, highlighting the importance of multilingualism in the PYP programme.

The event was well attended by students from different Wells campuses, as well as visitors from D-Prep International School. The students received wonderful feedback about the dedication, passion and skills they demonstrated. We are all incredibly proud of these Grade 5 students and wish them every success as they continue their academic journey.
