Recently, the Grade 1 students from ۿ۴ý Thonglor embarked on an enriching journey to the Children’s Museum, nestled close to the vibrant Chatuchak Market in Bangkok. This educational escapade wasn’t just a day out; it was a hands-on experience in sustainability, environmental conservation, and artistic expression.

From the moment they stepped into the museum, the students were immersed in a world of learning and discovery. Guided by enthusiastic educators, they delved into the intricate concepts of sustainability and environmental stewardship. Through interactive exhibits and engaging discussions, the young minds grasped the significance of preserving our planet for future generations.

One highlight of the trip was the artistic workshop, where students unleashed their creativity using a unique technique. Armed with tin foil and markers, they let their imaginations run wild, transforming simple materials into stunning artworks. This hands-on activity not only fostered their artistic skills but also instilled a sense of resourcefulness and innovation.

But the learning didn’t stop there. The students were in for a real treat as they embarked on a fossil-digging adventure with their friends. With shovels in hand and excitement in their hearts, they unearthed ancient treasures, uncovering the mysteries of prehistoric life. This immersive experience sparked curiosity and ignited a passion for science and exploration among the young adventurers.

On Friday, February 23rd, the ۿ۴ý Chonburi campus students spent an exciting morning at the local fire station. This was a super special day because the Wells K1 students were all able to see where firefighters work and learn all about their important jobs.

Our Kindergarten 1 students climbed into the school vans, buckled up and took the short trip to the fire station. As they got there, the firefighters greeted them with big smiles. The firefighters showed our students around the station, and they got to see the big fire truck.

The little students learned about all the different equipment firefighters use and got to try on some hats and practice holding some equipment. Our students were so excited and eager to take turns trying new things. It was so exciting when the students held onto the water hose and watched the water spray out. The kindergarteners were brave enough to try all the new experiences on that day.

Wells Bang Na students have been all around town visiting a variety of new places. Our teachers and students are thrilled to be able to learn off campus as it adds dimension to each unit of inquiry. Read all about our adventures at the new places we visited!

Under the Stars with Grade 3 – Planetarium

The students thoroughly enjoyed the show at the planetarium, but they found the most joy in the science center. They were fascinated by the preserved reptiles, as well as the dinosaur section. They learnt about the planets, but also the myriad of constellations and their names. They also found out more about the northern lights and how they are formed. The Grade 3 students have a deeper understanding of just how large the universe is! While we know many things about it, there is still so much more to discover.

Modern Art Fans, Grade 4 – Bangkok Art and Culture Center

Grade 4 enjoyed their visit to BACC. We are studying structures in our current unit and focusing on functionality and aesthetics. The students loved walking around looking at the different art exhibitions and really admired the design of the building. They learned that art can be interpreted in many different ways and that they each have their own unique style and taste in what they like. They also learned that it is ok to have a difference of opinion in what you find to be special or beautiful. The Bangkok Art and Cultural Center was a great place to visit and the class was able to make many connections between our unit on structures with their visit to the museum.

Active Learning at the Children’s Discovery Museum with K3

The K3 field trip to the Children’s Discovery Museum was an exceptional learning experience. The students had a great time exploring interactive and hands-on activities. K3 loved looking at different exhibits, and engaging with the world beyond our campus. One highlight was the interactive vegetable garden. Students enjoyed a coloring activity and watched their vegetables come to life in the interactive garden. Next, we visited the ‘Dino Detective’ park, which was the pinnacle of the trip for everyone. Most K3 students are highly interested in dinosaurs, so this was a popular spot. K3 learned about the dinosaurs and participated in an outdoor fossil dig. Students were given tools to hunt for dinosaur fossils in the sand. After the fossil dig, the students enjoyed watching a short 4D cartoon. After hours of fresh and exciting learning experiences, the students had an opportunity to let off some energy in the outdoor activity zone, exploring a jungle adventure climbing frame and tree house and playing with slides, a tunnel, nets, and a suspension bridge. It was an exciting day for K3 and provided many opportunities for learning and reflection.

Grade 2 – The Coin Museum

Grade 2’s visit to The Coin Museum was a huge success. This exhibition, run by the Treasury Department, showed the history of currency from early trade through to mobile banking. Students particularly enjoyed embossing and stamping designs from around the world, and using interactive displays to learn about alloys used in coin manufacture. A highlight for the whole class was the 4D presentation at the start of the tour, which featured an artificial cave with moving paintings and a crackling campfire. Students came away with an increased appreciation of currency as an art form, considering how it expresses the cultures of those who create it. Money gives value to goods and services, but it also reflects the values of the people who use it.

Grade 1 – Museum Siam

Grade 1 had a great time during the field trip to Museum Siam. Students were fascinated by the clever displays that in many cases involved hands-on activities to keep them engaged. Several elements from this trip tied directly into our current unit. We saw more traditional toys that kids have played with in the past, rather than using iPads and video game systems. Lithograph toys showed a contrast to what kids typically play with today. Students were able to sit in more traditional desks and read old Thai textbooks and maps. They saw old music boxes with CDs and cassette tapes. Large cell phones, that never knew of the internet, were also on display. It was a fun and educational adventure for all!

On 30th September , we welcomed a great number of parents from all year levels, on to campus to join our Parent Workshop.

Homeroom teachers presented a short demo/parent workshop, and provided all the necessary information you will need to ensure this academic year is a success.

Research shows that when a partnership approach between parents and the school is evident, children’s work habits, attitudes about school and grades improve. They demonstrate better social skills, fewer behavioral problems and a greater ability to adapt to situations and get along.

Throughout this academic year, we are planning a variety of parent workshops based around ‘learning with your child.’ This provides opportunities for our parents to obtain an in-depth understanding of all aspects of the school, in particular the academic programme.

ASL Field Trip to YimSoo Cafe and Setsatian School for the Deaf

The Wells Sign Language Club took a memorable trip on the 14th of February. The trip started off with the YimSoo cafe, a cafe that hires employees with hearing disabilities, hence the only language they communicate in is sign language. This was great practice and experience for the Sign Club members since we have been preparing for this kind of interaction for months. The Sign Club also had the opportunity to talk to the owner of the cafe, aiding the members in the process of understanding the motivation it took to start a business in Thai culture that’s friendly for the hearing disabled.

Afterwards, the Sign Club visited the Setsatian School for the Deaf, a visit both the students at the school and the club members enjoyed. The members played various games and activities, and interacted with the children in sign. It was definitely an experience the members will remember and look forward to a similar experience again in the near future.

tudent Reflections

“When my club members and I reached the Yimsoo Cafe, I immediately noticed that it was a quiet and peaceful environment. I didn’t know what to do because I thought the workers could only speak Thai Sign Language. I was wrong, as there was a worker who could speak both ASL and TSL. I couldn’t talk to her at first, because I was nervous for some reason. Then I saw how friendly she was talking to Ms. Viessa and another club member. Soon enough, I had the chance to introduce myself!

Everyone in Setsatian School does exactly the same things hearing people do, except they do more. We all know there are some successful deaf people in our midst, so we can’t just assume all deaf people are disabled and hopeless. I don’t know how to explain more of this experience, I didn’t want it to end. I wouldn’t know what it’s like to be deaf, but I could only imagine. I’m looking forward to being fluent in this ASL. I want to continue and hopefully be part of the deaf community.”

–Justin, Class of 2021 (Leader)

ASL

“In ASL class, at Setsatian School, the seniors were learning to fingerspell short words, and we also had a chance to introduce ourselves to the class. I was so impressed by the teacher’s facial expressions along with Ms. Viessa’s narration. Before we went back to Wells, I walked past a group of hearing seniors from that class, and he said the word ‘thank you’ to me. Right at that moment, I promised myself that I would never forget this day and would come to the Saturday class one day.”

–Pach, Class of 2020

20200214_105821

“The reason why we went to Yimsoo Cafe was that some workers at Yimsoo Cafe are deaf and we found out that Yimsoo Cafe hires deaf workers, too. When we first entered the cafe, the place was quiet and well decorated. After we ordered drinks, some of our club members tried to have a conversation by using sign language with workers. Later, we met the owner of Yimsoo Cafe and I recognized him because the logo of YImsoo Cafe was a drawing of him. He was blind but I could see him facing his face to us, which looked like he could see.”

–Sandy, Class of 2020

IMG_1113

“During the time in Setsatian school, we enjoyed the time we played with the kids who studied in kindergarten. Their attitude was very active and curious about everything, which is the same with a normal kid. It wasn’t the same as what people think. They thought those muted students would be negative and hopeless. However, they were very active and energetic when we arrived at the school, and although they can’t speak properly like us, they have enough confidence to face different kinds of problems.”

–Gordon, Class of 2021

ASL

“Before joining Sign Club, I essentially had no idea whatsoever about Sign Language. The only things I knew were that people who were deaf use it and you use your hands in order to communicate quickly. To my surprise, there wasn’t actually a single, universal Sign Language but instead, like our everyday speaking languages, many different variants such as ASL (American Sign Language) and TSL (Thai Sign Language). One of the workers there knew both ASL and TSL and it was incredibly astonishing to see them communicate with one of our leaders. After about an hour, when we were about to leave the cafe, I asked the owner for more information about this business (If this was a family business, if his family supported his decision in the beginning, how their supply of pure coffee beans were different from the rest, etc.).

–Dan, Class of 2021

ASL

“We met children and teachers at a library in the school. I think around 20 children came to the library with teachers. Teachers were talking with children using sign language. Each of the club members introduced their sign names. The children tried to remember all the sign names and they would repeat the sign three or four times. It was so cute. This was my first time communicating with deaf children, but they welcomed us and communicated with us kindly. And I found my stereotype of deaf people was not correct. It changed.”

–Yuna, Class of 2021

ASL

“The Yim-soo cafe hires employees who are hearing impaired and the best part about this cafe was when we got to communicate with some of the employees through ASL. Some of our club members were ecstatic when one of the employees knew ASL. When the day was finally over, I understood that language isn’t just about the words and letters. Language is universal and means of communication can be born from numerous kinds of expression. It’s just so creative and incredible to see how humans can interact with each other in various ways.”

–Wadi, Class of 2021

ASL

Special Thanks

Wells ASL Club would like to extend our appreciation and gratitude to the owner of YimSoo Cafe and Setsatian School for the Deaf for giving us a warm welcome and helping us gain first-hand knowledge and experience in the deaf community. We look forward to continued future collaboration!

Grade2students at Wells Bang Na got excited about their new inquiry into the system of money with a field trip to the Royal Thai Mint. This is where all coins in the Kingdom are made. It was interesting to see the process from beginning to finish of how baht are made. We saw the history of the process as well. We learned how bartering in ancient times led to our modern money systems.

A Trip to Toyota Ban Pho Factory & Chewa Pavanet Biotope

On Monday, January 20, 2020, teachers and students departed from Wells early in the morning for their visit to Toyota Ban Pho Factory and Chewa Pavanet Biotope. A joint trip with grade 12 Business Management (BM) students and grade 11 Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) students aimed to give insight into one of the top car-making companies in the world, from their production line to their Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, including the 60 rai Biotope forest at Ban Pho.

Student Reflections

The following excerpts from students’ reflections post trip, as well as the photos, show how important these trips are for students in experiencing the real-world application of the theories and concepts discussed in class.

Toyota Factory

For ESS students, their focus was on understanding the aspects of the company from lenses of the sustainability compass, Nature, Economy, Society and Well-being. For BM students, their focus was on operations, but also were open to understanding other aspects of a large company including human relations and leadership.

Toyota Factory

“My family also uses a Toyota car; it was really great to know about the actions and aims from the company we bought the car from. Another take away was that there are very limited times that we get to see all the [sustainability] lenses incorporated… and it was great to clearly see and understand all the perspectives of the sustainability compass through this trip.” -Shradha, ESS

“Many people from outside the company may not see or know what goes on in the factory — that is why i found it a great learning experience. I was surprised with how clean the factory is, as I always viewed factories to be dirty with poor working conditions. Overall, I feel trips like this should happen again to educate [about] sustainability through the business.” -Justin, ESS

Toyota Factory field trip

“It was fun – we got to explore and see a lot of environmentally friendly stuff. … Asking Toyota employees in a Q&A was good…they answered questions [about] shifts, resources, and about carbon emissions.” –Kevin, ESS

Overall, it was a great experience to have the opportunity to visit the biggest automotive manufacturer in Asia Pacific and to be able to see the operation system in a real world industry, while keeping mindful with the environmental impact like carbon dioxide emissions. –Ivy, BM

Toyota Factory

“I have always thought factories would emit the most amount of greenhouse gasses and would not care about the environment, but today I saw and learned that car factories are working hard to decline the amount of GHG they emit by creating eco forests and making hybrid cars.” -SeungEun, ESS

_20200120_211932

“Receiving the opportunity to explore the production process of Toyota company was an incredible experience. Not only getting the chance to gain primary source and first hand experience with the assembly but get to understand the working environment and notice the culture in the business…this experience has made me see the bigger image of how every section of the business relates to each other. For instance, adapting the whole business for a new product will affect HR, Finance, Marketing, Production and Operation in various ways.” –Zarina, BM

Field trip to Toyota was very surprising to me as I’ve never been to a car factory before. Until today, I’ve never thought about how difficult and complex it is to manufacture a car and I’ve ridden a car for granted without thinking much about the process behind the production. By observing the whole process at the assembly shop, I’ve realized how much work and effort are required to produce one car….Overall, the trip was very conducive to my business education as I’ve learned how the company actually deals with its operations, human resources, and marketing via CSR: hands-on experiences are best in learning. Thank you so much Ms. Lee for giving this opportunity for our education!

K9 Club at CHSAThai Stray Animal Shelter – Service Trip

December 8-10, 2019

IMG_5996

Although being fairly new, the Wells K9 Club came together once again to organize the annual service trip to visit the lively animals at, who desperately need our support. This shelter is located in Saraburi, and the 3-day overnight trip took place from December 8 to 10, 2019. For these 3 days, we accommodated our team at the Had Song Kwae Resort near the shelter, making transportation for the 37 people easy. Once we had arrived at the shelter, we had a tour of the entire shelter while playing and meeting the dogs, cats, pigs, and a monkey. The next day, everybody got into work mode. We were big in number, so we divided ourselves into groups and shifts where we helped the shelter plant trees, trim plants, and moved heavy objects to organize the place. K9 Club continued the work and finished the final touches on the third day.

K9 Service Trip

The ultimate goal and focus of this trip was to provide our love and support to the 2000+ animals taking residence at the shelter. Considering they don’t get a lot of visitors, one of the most pressing concerns for the owner was both raising awareness about the mistreatment of the animals before they were brought to the shelter, as well as attempting to show the animals that they are loved and cared for. Together with this, we also lent a hand with some tedious gardening work that helped the environment the animals were in.

K9 Service Trip

K9 Service Trip

Additionally, another one of our bigger goals was to help advertise the shelter in order to increase the donations they receive, as well as give them a voice on a larger platform. In order to accomplish this, our team created a promotional video in which the entire shelter is shown, together with the work we did there. In order to raise as much money as we could to give the shelter during this trip, K9 Club hosted a series of events at Wells. This included making smoothies, selling shirts made with our logo, as well as having movie nights. All of the profit from the events as well as our past earnings were successfully donated to the CHSAthai Stray Animal Shelter.

K9 Service Trip

The days spent with the animals went by quickly, and it was time to say goodbye. By the end of the third day, the K9 members and chaperones thanked the owner and staff of the shelter for sharing with our club an unforgettable experience that both reminded us of the reason we made this club, as well as motivated us to continue our hard work. The owner of the CHSAthai Stray Animal Shelter was extremely appreciative of everyone’s effort and dedication. It was then time to head back to Bangkok.
