On Monday, March 18th, 2024, we departed from Wells early in the morning for our second annual visit to Toyota Ban Pho Plant. This trip was designed for Grade 12 students who are studying operations management in their 2nd year of Business Management (BM) studies, and aimed to give insight into one of the top car-making companies in the world production line.

Toyota Ban Pho Plant

During this time, BM senior students have been learning about the various aspects of lean manufacturing, inspired by Toyota. This trip exposed students to the complexities of operating a business in an era of groundbreaking innovations and changes in human resource management in a globalized environment; students were able to make connections between what they study and the real world.

Student Reflections

The following excerpts from students’ reflections post trip, as well as the photos, show how important these trips are for students in experiencing the real-world application of the theories and concepts discussed in class:

“Overall, this trip was quite beneficial as I got to make many connections with the things that we have learned in BM class. Not only that, but it was quite fun to see the idea of lean manufacturing and quality control methods in real life after hearing about them. The most important thing that I learned was that as the world is developing more and more things are going to be automated, even the simpler things like moving one part from one area to another or flipping the frame of the car upside down.”

-Franny

Toyota Ban Pho Plant

“I also saw how sustainability was implemented into the factory work. Toyota has grass fields around their factory to improve the environment and they also reuse the water that was used to check the car windows. We all were also able to identify defects which was really cool as it connects to what we are learning in class.”

-Arjan

“This trip indeed helped my learning. As I watched the production line, I was reminded of various concepts about lean production we learned in class. When I saw some colorful posters to inform workers about Toyota’s mission, or when I saw the wall of hall of fame, I was reminded of a lot about what I researched for my university entrance exam interview, about what companies like Toyota do to motivate Thai workers. From now on, whenever I learn about operation management in business management, I feel like I will right away think of the scenery I saw in the factory today, which would also be helpful for my learning in the university as well.”

-Risa

Toyota Ban Pho Plant

“I would say that observing the factory and being able to discuss and explain things with and to my friends while we were walking through it helped enhance my own understanding of what was going on and the BM connections.”

-Sameer

Toyota Ban Pho Plant

“I felt that this field trip was a good experience because we got to learn about Toyota’s operations while connecting it with the BM tools and theories that we have been learning for the past two years. The most memorable experience during the field trip was seeing the long conveyor belt/tunnel of cars being tested on. This was the most memorable experience to me because seeing the large amount of cars being worked on looked cool.”

-Jayden

“It was interesting to see that I was able to spot some similarities between the video we watched in class about Kaizen and during the tour. For example, the tools needed for production were placed in specific areas or kept in specific compartments which makes it easier for the employees to navigate the tools and minimizes the time wasted on finding the tools…This experience has made me realize that the concepts that we have learnt in class are important and correlate to the real world.”

-Ati

“As the tour guide continued to talk about their methods of production, I had these moments where I knew exactly what they were talking about which helped me to brush up on a few terms. This trip also allowed me to see an actual real life business operate like it does daily and I think that I was also a little thankful as working such long shifts must be very tiring for the workers, as well as working during the hot summers must be even worse”.

“This was probably one of the most insightful field trips ever. It was super cool to see Toyota and how they operate. I never would have thought it takes like 90 seconds for some processes and that Toyota Thailand exports back to Japan despite Toyota being a Japanese company…Witnessing the efficiency and precision of Toyota’s operations firsthand was eye-opening, and it showed the importance of continuous improvement and lean principles in maximizing productivity.”

-Shivam

“Walking through the factory, I was amazed by the size and efficiency of the operation. Watching the workers and machines working together so seamlessly was very impressive. Despite learning a lot during the trip, it also left me with many questions. I found myself wondering about topics like supply chain management and the role of technology in the manufacturing process. I realized there’s still so much more to learn about how companies like Toyota operate.”

-Riyan

Monday-November 27-2023
Happy Loy Krathong Day! The spirit of this vibrant festival came alive at ۿ۴ý as our students adorned themselves in traditional Thai attire, embracing the rich cultural heritage of one of Thailand’s grandest celebrations.
The festivities kicked off with a heartfelt speech about Loy Krathong delivered by our insightful Grade 1 students. Their words set the tone for a day filled with cultural immersion and joyous celebration. Following this, our talented students graced the stage with a captivating Loy Krathong dance performance, drawing everyone into the beauty of this traditional Thai festival. The joy was contagious, and soon, students and staff joined in, dancing together in unison, creating a lively and festive atmosphere.
But the celebration didn’t stop there. Various stations were set up to engage everyone in the richness of Loy Krathong traditions. Students had the opportunity to learn the intricate art of crafting Krathong from lotus leaves, a hands-on experience that connected them to the cultural roots of the festival.
A special note of gratitude goes out to all the parents who actively participated, contributing to the success of this special occasion. Your involvement made Loy Krathong Day at ۿ۴ý a truly memorable and enriching experience for everyone.
We look forward to more opportunities to celebrate and embrace the diverse cultural tapestry that makes our school community so special.

Our exciting Summer Fun Program has come to an end, leaving behind a trail of wonderful memories and unforgettable experiences. Over the past few weeks, participants from Nursery to Grade 8 were treated to a delightful array of activities and adventures. From exciting outdoor games that brought out their inner adventurers, to creative arts and crafts sessions that nurtured their artistic talents, there was never a dull moment.

Chonburi Summer Fun

We celebrated the richness of culture and diversity, taking our participants on a fascinating journey of exploration. With a focus on embracing different traditions and customs, we engaged in cultural workshops, where children’s activities and perspectives foster understanding and respect among the group. Our middle school group even tried their skills at making ravioli.

Chonburi Summer Fun

Chonburi Summer Fun

As we delved into the wonders of nature, we embarked on an adventurous exploration of various habitats. Our young learners discovered the unique ecosystems and the incredible creatures that call these habitats home. Through hands-on activities, such as scavenger hunts outside and observing small creatures, they gained an appreciation for the delicate balance of nature and the importance of preserving our environment. Our talented and passionate team of instructors made sure that each day was filled with joy, laughter, and learning.

Chonburi Summer Fun

As we bid farewell to this year’s Summer Fun Program, we cherish the lasting memories created during our exploration of culture, habitats, and the enchanting world under the sea. It is our hope that these experiences have inspired a sense of wonder and curiosity for the world around us in each young heart that took part in our program. We also hope that our students built strong friendships with new and old friends and got to know their new teachers better.

Chonburi Summer Fun

We’re already excitedly planning for the next summer, where we hope to create even more magical moments for everyone involved! Don’t forget to join us next June-July for another eventful and exciting summer program.

Songkran is Thailand’s most famous festival and a favorite here at Wells Thong Lor. Every year our school community works together to make it a success and this year was no exception. To mark the beginning of the traditional Thai New Year Wells students from all over the globe paid respect to and celebrated Thai culture. They performed traditional Thai dances before participating in the water ceremony, where students wished their teachers a happy Songkran in the traditional way by pouring water and jasmine petals over their hands. Songkran is a time to cleanse and pay respects but also to let loose in wild water fights. The support staff at Wells Thong Lor worked extremely hard in transforming our school playground into a water park. The students and teachers made their way around a variety of events including the ‘slip n slide’, ‘pool games, and ‘water slide’, not forgetting the ‘ܲ԰’ where students got the chance to dunk their teacher, this proved to be a favorite. Thank you to all our students, parents, teachers, and support staff at Wells Thong Lor! What a fantastically fun Songkran full of smiles, laughter, and a lot of water! Wishing all of our families a wonderful and safe holiday. We will see you on Monday 17th April.

Wells Bang Na students have been all around town visiting a variety of new places. Our teachers and students are thrilled to be able to learn off campus as it adds dimension to each unit of inquiry. Read all about our adventures at the new places we visited!

Under the Stars with Grade 3 – Planetarium

The students thoroughly enjoyed the show at the planetarium, but they found the most joy in the science center. They were fascinated by the preserved reptiles, as well as the dinosaur section. They learnt about the planets, but also the myriad of constellations and their names. They also found out more about the northern lights and how they are formed. The Grade 3 students have a deeper understanding of just how large the universe is! While we know many things about it, there is still so much more to discover.

Modern Art Fans, Grade 4 – Bangkok Art and Culture Center

Grade 4 enjoyed their visit to BACC. We are studying structures in our current unit and focusing on functionality and aesthetics. The students loved walking around looking at the different art exhibitions and really admired the design of the building. They learned that art can be interpreted in many different ways and that they each have their own unique style and taste in what they like. They also learned that it is ok to have a difference of opinion in what you find to be special or beautiful. The Bangkok Art and Cultural Center was a great place to visit and the class was able to make many connections between our unit on structures with their visit to the museum.

Active Learning at the Children’s Discovery Museum with K3

The K3 field trip to the Children’s Discovery Museum was an exceptional learning experience. The students had a great time exploring interactive and hands-on activities. K3 loved looking at different exhibits, and engaging with the world beyond our campus. One highlight was the interactive vegetable garden. Students enjoyed a coloring activity and watched their vegetables come to life in the interactive garden. Next, we visited the ‘Dino Detective’ park, which was the pinnacle of the trip for everyone. Most K3 students are highly interested in dinosaurs, so this was a popular spot. K3 learned about the dinosaurs and participated in an outdoor fossil dig. Students were given tools to hunt for dinosaur fossils in the sand. After the fossil dig, the students enjoyed watching a short 4D cartoon. After hours of fresh and exciting learning experiences, the students had an opportunity to let off some energy in the outdoor activity zone, exploring a jungle adventure climbing frame and tree house and playing with slides, a tunnel, nets, and a suspension bridge. It was an exciting day for K3 and provided many opportunities for learning and reflection.

Grade 2 – The Coin Museum

Grade 2’s visit to The Coin Museum was a huge success. This exhibition, run by the Treasury Department, showed the history of currency from early trade through to mobile banking. Students particularly enjoyed embossing and stamping designs from around the world, and using interactive displays to learn about alloys used in coin manufacture. A highlight for the whole class was the 4D presentation at the start of the tour, which featured an artificial cave with moving paintings and a crackling campfire. Students came away with an increased appreciation of currency as an art form, considering how it expresses the cultures of those who create it. Money gives value to goods and services, but it also reflects the values of the people who use it.

Grade 1 – Museum Siam

Grade 1 had a great time during the field trip to Museum Siam. Students were fascinated by the clever displays that in many cases involved hands-on activities to keep them engaged. Several elements from this trip tied directly into our current unit. We saw more traditional toys that kids have played with in the past, rather than using iPads and video game systems. Lithograph toys showed a contrast to what kids typically play with today. Students were able to sit in more traditional desks and read old Thai textbooks and maps. They saw old music boxes with CDs and cassette tapes. Large cell phones, that never knew of the internet, were also on display. It was a fun and educational adventure for all!

Using money is an important skill we need in our everyday life. Grade 2B students are aware of that too and they were very excited to learn that the month of February was all about money. They already knew something about digital currencies used in games, or about coins and bills. In our classes they had a chance to learn about the history of banks, credit/debit cards and mobile banking. They learned about dollars and used their knowledge to solve different mathematical problems. However, they did not have that much experience touching or using actual money. Thanks to other Wells teachers, we collected more than 8 international currencies for the Grade 2B to explore. The students had a chance to explore more than 8 international currencies from all around the world. They could touch them, compare them and check them for differences and hidden secret pictures. They also recreated a real-life market where they role-played customers and market vendors and used actual Thai baht coins to shop and sell items they found in the classroom. February was certainly a month rich in learning and fun!
