IB Diploma Programme (IB DP) candidates of the class of 2021, Hrithi Bhattacharya and Seung Eun Lee, created story books as part of the end of their Environmental Systems and Societies class here at Wells On Nut campus. As students aiming to change the world one student at a time, both IB DP seniors chose to focus on an environmental issue they thought most important to share with others, as part of developing their global citizenship and responsibility to make a positive impact on the younger generations.

IB ESS

Both Hrithi and Seung Eun created a story book to share with the Wells Bang Na campus and their younger peer learners. This gave an opportunity for intergenerational learning, and empowered these IB DP candidates and Wells graduates (#Class of 2021) to not only share their messages, but also learn and be inspired by the questions and work of these future Wells graduates and current IB Primary Years Program (IB PYP) students.

IB ESS

On the last day as seniors, Friday May 21, 2021, the IB DP class of 2021 graduate Hrithi joined Wells Bang Na Campus Grades 3, 4 and 5 to share the story book she wrote and designed followed by a Q&A session.

IB ESS

The Q&A session that followed gave an opportunity for the IB Primary Year students to ask their questions. Not only that, but since this was their first time making story books it was helpful that the younger students could give feedback on how the storybook might be improved. This feedback was insightful and showed the critical thinking and evaluation skills developing in these early learners!

Seung Eun’s story book was drawn by hand, and . She wrote and drew two chapters of a book that follows a girl and her stuffed animal through two journeys. We are excited to see where this character’s next adventure will be, and what important environmental issues we will learn about along the way!

ESS students test soil quality at Wells Bang Na Farm

Project-based Learning with Environmental Systems and Societies in collaboration with Wells Bang Na Campus

In September, the grade 11 and 12 students of Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) course collaborated with Wells Bang Na campus to investigate the soil quality of their farm. Each year, Bang Na students plant various crops with their teachers at the farm next to Wells kindergarten building with varying success in productivity. Presented with the problem of improving crop productivity, Wells On Nut Campus students prepared an investigation into the qualities of soil to determine appropriate steps that may be taken at the Bang Na campus farm.

The collaboration was led by grade 12 students, who designed the investigation as preparation for their IB Internal Assessment (IA) under their instructor Mr. Chase, after an initial visit to the Bang Na farm in early September. Grade 11 ESS students undertook the investigation in four teams to collect soil samples throughout the various crop beds and carry out soil tests in the lab. Soil samples were also collected and will be returned to the Biology and Chemistry labs for further analysis. For the final step, a presentation will be created to inform the Bang Na students and teachers of the findings and suggestions for how the Bang Na campus farm will be able to  improve crop productivity. We will look forward to sharing that news in a future post!

Guest Speaker, Dr. Chapagain

On September 26th, we hosted a special member of our Wells community and guest speaker from USAid, Dr. Chapagain to come and educate our high school students about his work.  Dr. Chapagain works with , an organization that works in Southeast Asia to promote environmentally friendly practices, policies, changes and economic development. Although his lecture focused on the environmental aspects of his work, it was also connected to other subjects such as science, economics and business. The talk also gave our students perspectives on potential career options in this field, as well as businesses that promote sustainability.

Eldridge Cleaver once said, “There is no more neutrality in the world. You either have to be part of the solution, or you’re going to be part of the problem.” Dr. Chapagain discussed how USAid focuses on supporting businesses to create solutions to the environmental crises the world is currently faced with. He spoke about the realities of sustainable land use and predictions for future realities of population growth and food production in the Asia-Pacific region, and how these continue to contribute to current environmental issues, such as industrial agriculture, deforestation, and greenhouse gas emissions.
One opportunity to reduce greenhouse gases in Asia is to contribute to economic growth through improvement in sustainable land use. Dr. Chapagain engaged the students in an activity to spark their critical thinking skills and encourage them to think about potential solutions to these larger global issues. He also introduced them to the idea of community forests, which help contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by making sustainable forest management a reality.
