Class of 2018

On Friday evening, June 1, ۿ۴ý’s 2018 Commencement Exercises saw its senior class walk through the halls officially for very last time as Wells students. At 6pm, our graduates, like the eight graduating classes before them, marched (briskly) to Elgar’s “Pomp & Circumstance” on a 500-meter path circling each floor before making their grand entrance at the gymnasium, in front of family, friends, and Wells community members.

The ceremony started with the high school glee club, minus its senior members, singing the King’s Anthem, followed by welcome addresses by our Chairman, Dr. Yao-Lang Chang, and Head of School, Mr. Ray de la Pena.

Class of 2018

An annual tradition continued with Student Body President and class valedictorian Purvaansh Lohiya (Puru) delivering a final farewell speech. Puru has been a student at Wells since middle school. He has traveled the world throughout his middle and high school career, serving as an ambassador for Wells as a leader in all facets of student life – from academics to athletics, community service and school leadership. After being accepted to a number of top universities in the U.S., Puru has decided to attend one of the top and most recognizable schools in America, the University of California at Berkeley.

Following a video tribute to the Class of 2018, the final speaker of the night, delivering a powerful and inspirational Keynote Address, was Ms. Natalie Glebova, 2005 Miss Universe and co-founder of EMPOWERED – a personal and professional skills development program for high school and college students based here in Bangkok.

Awards were also presented at the ceremonies to recognize three outstanding graduates.

Receiving this year’s Director’s Award for the top graduating male was, unsurprisingly, Puru Lohiya who previously delivered the valedictorian’s speech.

Also receiving awards at the ceremony were Sarick Chapagain, the recipient of the Head of School’s Award for a top female student. Sarick will be attending Ryerson University in Canada in the fall.

Yen Ting (Willy) Li was the recipient of the Chairman’s Award, a special award given to the graduate that most exemplifies the spirit of ۿ۴ý. Willy will be moving back to his home to attend a university in Taiwan.

Class of 2018

As a farewell to the graduates from their younger peers, a performance was staged by members of the high school glee club, singing “From Now On” and “A Million Dreams” from the hit musical “The Greatest Showman”. Both selections carry important messages of hopes and dreams appropriate for this graduating class.

The evening ended with the conferring of diplomas to the forty-eight members of the graduating class, followed by the traditional tassel-switch and cap toss.

Class of 2018

Congratulations to all graduates – YOU WILL BE MISSED!

At the end of May, after finishing up their IB exams and final assessments, twenty three of the members of the senior Class of 2018 attended the senior trip, a week long trip and cruise tour around various European countries and cities.

Their first destination was Barcelona, where the students embarked on the Norwegian Epic cruise, their home for the next week. The cruise made stops in Milan, Rome, Livorno, Cannes, and Palma de Majorca — with a final destination back in Barcelona.

The students toured around these famous cities, seeing all kinds of historical sights and creating many memorable experiences, including exploring the ruins of Pompeii, hiking up Mount Vesuvius, attending mass and receiving a blessing from Pope Francis at the Vatican, visiting the Colosseum and leaning tower of Pisa, a quick trip to Monaco during the Grand Prix, and exploring the charming island of Majorca.

The final day consisted of a walking tour in Barcelona, taking in the beautiful sights, visiting Sagrada Familia, and of course, eating a famous Spanish dish, paella!

The seniors had quite the remarkable adventure to celebrate the end of their high school journeys, which ended on a very positive note.

We wish them the best of luck as they embark on their next adventure to university and beyond. Although they will be away from Wells, we hope that Wells will always be a part of them…changing the world, one student at a time!

Last week (November 13 – 17), the High School Student Council hosted Spirit Week 2017, a week dedicated to raising school morale through conducting inter-class competitions accompanied with a set of activities. Each day had a theme, starting with Pajama Day on Monday.

The following days included Triplet Day and Disney Day, where students had to dress up and impersonate their favorite Disney character. Thursday’s theme was used to promote raising awareness for men’s health with Movember and mustache-themed class photos.

The final day of Spirit Week found students representing their class colors and graduating years. One could feel the unity and enthusiasm through the halls of Wells as students worked together to complete their daily photo and video challenges aligned with their ESLRs related to communication and ICT use.

A special thanks goes to the High School Student Council for organizing Spirit Week, Photography Club for capturing the moments, and to all those who participated and showed their school spirit!
