The parents of our Taiwanese and Chinese students prepared a dumpling cooking station so that everyone could learn how to make delicious jiÇŽozi! Not only were these dumplings delicious and filling, learning how to prepare dumplings by hand reminded our parents, teachers and students that there is great joy in cooking together.

An important aspect of every Lunar New Year celebration is the story of Nian. Our teachers used props and illustrations to bring the mythical creature Nian to life! This story is a powerful reminder that fear can be conquered through knowledge and understanding. In this legend, the villagers must protect themselves from Nian’s destruction. By working together as a community, the villagers overcome the beast. The story of Nian reminds us that we are stronger and more supported when we work together.

The highlight of this celebration was the Lion dance and firecrackers! Every year, the highschool students perform live percussion while the lion entertains the students and gobbles up oranges from their hands. This performance has great significance in Chinese culture, representing good luck and prosperity in the new year.

Wells Thong Lo had a joyous pre –Chinese New Year celebration on 23rdÌýJanuary 2020.ÌýIt was so wonderful to see our school community come together during our Chinese New Year Celebration.ÌýThank you to all parents, students, teachers and staff members who took part in making this Lunar New Year event a success.ÌýOur kids are truly lucky to have a strong community behind them.

ThisÌýyear, the Lunar New Year falls on Saturday, January 25thÌýand it is the year of the RAT. The Lunar New Year is a holiday celebrated by many Asian countries based on theÌýLunar calendar. Each year is represented by an animal according to the 12 year Chinese zodiac.ÌýThe Chinese New Year can also be called “Guonian” which means the passing of the old year to the new one. This festival emphasizes the importance of family ties.

The celebration started withÌýChinese New Year song, dance and performance. The children were then introduced to Chinese New Year traditions and customs eg. festive decorations, the preparations of the reunion dinner, and various snacks eaten during the festival season.ÌýAll the kids worked very hard practicing during the week withÌýthe Mandarin department.ÌýStudents were pleasantly surprised by theÌýunexpected entry as our school staff made their appearance as the Wells lion dance troupe, dancing on stilts.

Lion Dance is a traditional art form that incorporates physical training commonly associated with martial arts and esthetic expressions. The lion dance is an excellent example of Chinese folk culture, which has spread across the world with Chinese immigration.ÌýWe ended our celebration with fun games and activities by our teachers and staff.

We hope everyone enjoyed the different dance performances, tasty Chinese snacks as well as the special performance by one of our parents.ÌýAnd of course our appreciation goes out to parent teams that came to set up, serve and cleanup.

Xin Nian Kuai Le (Happy New Year), everyone!
