The Seahawk Sports fall season officially is underway with the basketball and volleyball teams playing their first matches of the year.

In basketball, 扣扣传媒 teams reasserted themselves as major contenders for the league championships with a very strong start, as four out of five teams scored wins against various TISAC opponents.

On Monday, the Senior Girls team traveled to Bangkok Prep to open their season. Despite the expectedly hostile crowd, the Lady Seahawks cruised to a 31-11 win riding on strong defense and balanced scoring led by freshman center Marin Takahashi with 10 points.

Across town, the Senior Boys faced St. Stephen鈥檚 in a much more evenly matched game. Going up against a significantly taller opponent, Wells was able to overcome sloppy shooting in the first half to pull away at the end and win 30-24, let by the scoring of junior point guard Tanapon 鈥淏oss鈥 Phuripichet.

Also on Monday, the U11 co-ed team opened up their play against Bangkok Prep. Despite having several players who were participating in an organized basketball game for the first time, the youngest members of the Seahawk basketball program put up a good fight, but just couldn鈥檛 get the ball to fall in the basket, losing by a score of 22-6.

The U13 teams continued the action on Tuesday with both the U13 Boys and U13 Girls traveling to Charter International School. The host school put up little resistance as both teams came out ahead with lopsided victories 鈥 24-5 for the boys, and 22-13 for the girls.

In its inaugural year as an official Seahawk sport, both JV Girls Volleyball and JV Boys Volleyball teams started off an ambitious schedule with games against three of the larger, well-established international schools from BISAC: Ruamrudee International School and Harrow International School for the girls, and New International School Thailand (NIST) for the boys.

On Tuesday, the JV Girls team played the first official sports match in the new coliseum, hosting the Lady Phoenix from Ruamrudee International School. With just barely three months of training, the much less experienced Lady Seahawks were expectedly nervous, succumbing to the visiting team 3-0. Thursday鈥檚 visit to Harrow International School started out with more of the same as Wells鈥 girls struggled to score for the first two games. However, a line-up change by Harrow gave Wells a chance to build up their confidence in a more evenly matched game, thus resulting in their first game win in the young program鈥檚 history. Finally, with the match on the line, the hosting Harrow team put in their big players to cruise to a final game victory to seal the match at 3 games to 1.

On the other side of the coin, the JV Boys Volleyball team made a big opening statement by taking on the much more experienced Falcons of NIST. Playing for their first time ever, the young Seahawks were noticeably nervous at first, dropping both games 1 & 2 by the score of 25-23 and 25-21. However, the overconfident Falcon squad played their bench in game 3, allowing Wells to gain just enough confidence to overcome their nervous start, and to beat the Falcons 26-24. In game 4, the Falcons began mixing up their team a bit, but to no avail as the Seahawks cruised to a 25-16 win, knotting up the match at two games each, and forcing a 15-point tie-breaker set. In that final game, the score see-sawed back and forth until a late surge gave NIST quadruple match-point at 14-10. However, not wanting to disappoint the large contingent of Seahawk supporters in the stands, the JV boys ran off six straight points behind the consistent-under-pressure serving of freshman setter Praat 鈥淭an鈥 Sukriket, stunning their hosts 16-14, to win the very first match for the Wells Volleyball Program.

Next week is light week in sports with a friendly basketball game versus BCIS and a couple of league basketball games versus Bangkok Prep. At the end of the week, the Under 15鈥橞oys and Under 15 Girls, both TISAC defending champions, travel to Khao Yai to participate in the 12-team St. Stephen鈥檚 Invitational Basketball Tournament.

GO SEAHAWKS!!!

Bangna 鈥 It was an auspicious start to the week-long series of TISAC badminton tourneys for the Seahawk badminton team. In just its second year in the conference, the Under 11s team captured the boys singles and mixed doubles titles, and placed 2nd in boys doubles, accumulating a total of 74 team points en route to earning the overall team title.

Finn Dardarananda, grade 3, brought home his second boys singles title in as many years. Finn was flawless in pool play, blanking opponents from St. Andrew鈥檚, St. Stephen鈥檚, and Charter, to earn a spot in the championship rounds. In the semi-finals, host school Concordian couldn鈥檛 take advantage of their home court advantage, as Finn once again cruised 2-0. The final match was just a rematch against his pool鈥檚 runner-up finisher from St. Andrew鈥檚, where Finn was able to cap of his perfect record with a 2-0 championship win.

Pawan and Darshan, both grade 4, paired off for the mixed doubles competition, where they also cruised to a perfect record with wins over familiar foes from St. Andrew鈥檚, St. Stephen鈥檚, and Charter. However, the championship round presented two new challengers, the first from Kessinee, who the mixed pair easily disposed of 2-0, followed by our British neighbors from Bangkok Prep in the championship game. Like Finn, Pawan and Darshan easily handled the challenge, beating the prepsters 2-0.

In the boys doubles, twins Yash and Shre, grade 4, nearly earned a trifecta for their school. After going undefeated in pool play, once again against St. Andy鈥檚 (2-1), St. Steph (2-0), and Charter (2-0), the brothers easily advanced to the final match by defeating Regents, 2-0. However, the host Dragons of Concordian wouldn鈥檛 be denied their lone title, as Yash and Shre dropped the championship game, 0-2, to settle for second place.

Also representing Wells were Nikara (girls singles), who advanced as far as the semi-final match, and Vivi and Hazina (girls doubles).

Go Seahawks!

Under 15 teams pick up a pair of victories over ASB

On Nut 鈥 The Under 15 Girls Team remain unstoppable as they pick up their third win in as many tries, soundly defeating the Lady Eagles of American School Bangkok 鈥 Sukhumvit Campus (ASB) 49-7. This time, however, ASB seemed to enter the game on a much more level playing field with the Lady Seahawks, compared to previous opponents Charter International School and Bangkok Christian International School. Nonetheless, as the Wells signature defense continues to baffle opponents, its offense continues to improve in leaps and bounds.

While keeping ASB scoreless for nearly the entire first half, Wells amassed 28 points 鈥 mostly from fast-break opportunities due to a very successful swarming defense that allowed just 7 points for the entire game. Additionally, shooting was well distributed with three players scoring in double figures (Ruchika 鈥 15 points, Kanny Smith 鈥 14 points, and Marin Takahashi 鈥 12 points).

The second game of the doubleheader was arguably the most exciting game of the season so far. Despite an obvious height disadvantage, the Wells Under 15 Boys team took part in a clinic of precision passing, quick defensive hands, and well-distributed shot selection.

Leading by only two, 8-6, at the end of the first quarter, the Seahawks really began to click in the second quarter. Behind a series of steals leading to easy layups by Kevin (gr. 8), and a pair of three-pointers by forward Harjas Anandsongvit (gr. 9), the Seahawks built a 25-15 lead by halftime. This lead proved to be enough as the Hawks matched the visiting team point-for-point as it tried, to no avail, to claw back into the game. However, when the dust settled, the boys from Wells came out on top, 45-36.

Scoring in double figures for the boys were Jim (gr. 9) with 16 points, Kevin with 11 points, and Harjas with 10 points.

The TISAC schedule continues in two weeks as the U15 teams take on Bangkok Prep on October 14. GO SEAHAWKS!

CLEAN SWEEP! /wells-on-nut/athletics/clean-sweep/ /wells-on-nut/athletics/clean-sweep/#comments Thu, 01 Oct 2009 04:54:12 +0000 http://wells.ac.th/?p=1594 On Nut 鈥 Wells youngest group of athletes received a strong boost of confidence Wednesday afternoon at the expense of three teams representing Charter International School. What started out as a festive atmosphere gradually turned sullen as the games progressed, marred by an injury along with what was perceived as a merciless pummeling of an obviously less experienced and less skilled team.

In the opener, the U11鈥檚 team jumped ahead to an early lead, scoring all of the first quarter鈥檚 points to open a lead of 20-2 by halftime. For the rest of the game, the outcome was never in question as virtually all of the teams 14 players contributed to the final score of 44-8. Leading all players was Tristen (grade 5) with 8 points and Oscar (grade 4) with 6 points.

Three Seahawk teams win big against visiting Charter International School

Things got uglier for the visiting team, as the Seahawk U13 Girls scored quickly and often. Point guard Kanny Smith benefited from a strong defensive team effort, scoring layup after layup to single-handedly amass a whopping 36 points for the game. Unable to penetrate the Seahawk zone defense, Charter did not score until the game was impossibly out of reach. At the end of just the first quarter, Wells led 32-0. And, despite the coaches being advised otherwise, the Seahawks continued to deliver a pounding, resulting in the embarrassing score of 70-6. This leads us to the impression that someone is in dire need to repeat to themselves: 鈥淛ust because you can, doesn鈥檛 mean you should.鈥

The final game of the day provided more of the same. Led by the trio of Ray (7), Angelo (6) and Reo (6), the U13 Boys built up a lead of 12-0 in the first quarter and didn鈥檛 let up throughout the game. However, the final score of 35-2 was the closest margin of the day. Leading the boys were both Ray and Reo with 10 points each, and Angelo with 8 points.

TISAC basketball play continues in two weeks (October 14) when Wells takes on teams from Keerapat International School, Rasami International School and Bangkok Prep.
