This year, 扣扣传媒 Bang Na organized a donation drive for a local foundation called Place of Grace.聽

Families from the school donated stationary gifts that could be distributed to children at their annual Christmas party. Most of the gifts were donated by families from the school community. Some teachers and other staff members contributed gifts, also. By the end of the gift drive, more than 200 gifts had been collected!

Wells Bang Na community also focused on collecting donations of dry food items for Place of Grace鈥檚 food bank. 鈥淔ood is something we should always share and I’m so happy we can give to these families鈥 said Ms. Nan. “It made me feel sad to know some kids don’t always have food. I am glad that we could help them out. We should do this again”, though Jason from Grade 4.

On December 16th, representatives of Wells Bang Na school delivered gifts and food donations to the Place of Grace Foundation. 鈥淚t was wonderful to see an organization that brings the community together and brings joy to children,鈥 mentioned Ms. Ellie, Grade 2 Teacher.

Annie, from Grade 5 reflected on the project and said 鈥淚t feels good to give to people, especially if you don鈥檛 know them鈥.聽

In the future there will be more opportunities for Wells students and families to come together in support of this community. Mr. Paul, the Chinese teacher said 鈥淲hen the time is right, we hope to see the kids and spend time with them. We are excited to do more activities with the children!鈥.聽

扣扣传媒 Bang Na campus would like to thank our whole community for contributing to this cause! We were able to go above and beyond our goal of 130 gifts.

Grade 2 Bake Sale | Thong Lo Campus

On Friday, March 22nd, the students of Grade 2A and 2B held a bake sale 聽for all of the students in Thong Lor. As we are beginning our new theme of money, we decided to let Grade 2 lead the day and see how much money they can raise for charity, for the Camillian Home. 聽The students(and parents!) very kindly donated treats for the students to sell to the rest of the school. Throughout the day they rotated around and took turns in selling their treats to each class. They were also able to purchase treats during their own snack time.

By the end of the day, almost everything was sold out and the students were amazed with the big bag of money they had! They eagerly waited until the following Tuesday to be able to count it.

On Tuesday morning, Grade 2B counted it first and had to keep it a secret from Grade 2A to see if we counted the same amount! Note by note and coin by coin, the students counted the money in small groups. We made one large addition sum on the board and the students had to work it out. Finally, each class compared their findings and we counted 4,963 baht in total. 聽The students were so pleased with the amount and teachers very proud of all their hard work. Well done Grade 2.

A global economy barely pulling itself from nose dive. Religious and cultural conflicts spreading from nation to nation. Poverty rates hovering near record highs. To an average teenage student, these issues鈥攁nd many more鈥攈ave unfortunately become a part of daily life. Continually experiencing a world in flux, they may all too easily become apathetic, unaware of the stark lives others lead. Seeking to infuse a greater passion within its students, Wells has gradually incorporated more and more community service programs into its curriculum. The school鈥檚 ESLRs鈥攚hich ask students to reflect, critique and evaluate issues, and communicate across cultures鈥攖hus increasingly ground their education in real life subjects.

The basis for this learning is typically first delivered in the classroom, particularly at the high school level. Dr. Del Dime鈥檚 Issues in Society course, aimed at upper level students interested in pursuing advocacy and service, fulfills that purpose. Earlier this year, the class welcomed guest speaker Cecilia Jimenez. Originally from the Philippines, Ms. Jimenez now delivers capacity-building training around Asia and works as a consultant, facilitating the growth of numerous government projects. This work has frequently allied her with international NGOs such as Amnesty International, the International Federation of Human Rights Leagues (FIDH), and the Association for the Prevention of Torture. She has furthermore contributed to several peer-reviewed publications and training manuals on the UN Human Rights system, human rights and migration, smuggling of human beings, prevention of torture, women in armed conflict situations, and engagement of non-state actors.

Discussing human rights worldwide in line with the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights (UNDHR)鈥攖he basis for the Issues in Society course鈥擬s. Jimenez asked the students their views of the different articles written in the UNDHR and which they thought were the most important. While numerous answers were offered, she stressed that Article 1 of the UNDHR serves as the foundation of all subsequent articles:

All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.

According to Ms. Jimenez, the first two articles refer to equality and non-discrimination, while the others fall under economic, social and cultural rights, or civil and political rights. Interdependent and indivisible, equality and non-discrimination are essential in guiding nations toward the adoption of human rights. With that concept in mind, she fielded queries related to free speech, suicide, abuse and current issues such as the prosecution of Julian Assange. Armed with new knowledge and fervor, the Wells students prepared themselves to employ their new knowledge outside the school walls.

In addition to inviting guests such as Ms. Jimenez, Wells has taken strides toward contributing to the welfare of the surrounding community. Over the past year, it has conducted projects in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity, the Bangkok ServICE Conference, the Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin and others. By relating classroom content and skills directly to such projects, students have gained a much greater appreciation for the need for a service mentality. “The smallest good deed is better than the grandest good intention.” 鈥 Duguet

Students, parents and staff at 扣扣传媒 constantly work together toward building a community that is perceptive of challenges faced by those less fortunate. The community responds to these by proactively engaging in activities that leave indelible impressions in the lives of the ones it affects. Wells community would like to encourage others to join hands in this endeavor.

Reported by Beer, Grade 12

My teacher – Mr. Philip – and I went to the Duang Prateep Foundation to get more information for my advocacy research, and we also brought milk and school supplies for the children. The Duang Prateep Foundation is a foundation was organized by Ms. Prateep. This foundation helps people in the Klong Toey community. For example, they give children who live in聽poor communities a chance to have an education, take care of children’s basic needs, support families from those poor areas to develop in a positive way, and work with other charity organizations to support the community and help it become stronger.

We went inside Klong Toey鈥檚 zones 1-3 to visit. There is a narrow footpath and track full of houses. Many of the families trade in front these houses. Some of the children do not go to school. They work with their families or play. A river is underneath them with many empty places that are full of garbage. Although the community is very poor and doesn鈥檛 have a lot of what my friends and I have, the people are friendly. I feel I am lucky, and I am starting to question why others are forced to have so many difficulties in their lives.

I learned a lot in this experience, and it makes me want to help change things. We are very lucky in our lives and we need to give back to our community. We can donate things to help or even better, we can help by teaching the people and children in poor communities. Helping them helps us understand other people more and become better people ourselves.
