The 扣扣传媒 basketball program was busy this past week, participating in six end-of-season basketball tournaments and reaching the final game in all but two of them 鈥 more than any other TISAC school 鈥 which resulted in two championships and two runner-up finishes.

The Under 15 Boys team added to their list of achievements with another impressive performance on Tuesday at Bangkok Prep. Though undefeated in pool play, the Seahawks did face a stiff challenge from the Eagles of ASB, winning on a buzzer-beating basket to win by just two points. In the championship game, also against ASB, the final outcome was still in question halfway through the 2nd period when Wells surged ahead behind two consecutive scores by (including a three-pointer) by freshman reserve Thapadit 鈥淥xygen鈥 Suksakorn. With a bit of breathing room, Wells鈥 signature pressure-defense was able to suppress any ASB, holding on for the team鈥檚 second tournament trophy of the season.

Wells’ second championship came two days later, in the friendly confines of Wells gymnasium, as the Senior Boys gave Wells its first-ever tournament trophy at the senior level. In round-robin pool play, Wells was dominated by the Lions from BCIS. However, convincing wins over teams from Bangkok Prep, St. Stephen鈥檚 and KIS gave the Senior Seahawks one final chance to redeem themselves against the defending TISAC-champion Lions. Refusing to squander such an opportunity, the Seahawks tightened their defensive stance, subduing the potent Lion offense and forcing a low-scoring game. BCIS was able to power its way through to put Wells in a hole by as much as 5 points late in the 2nd half. However, the Seahawks capitalized on several costly turnovers and eventually overtook the Lions to take a 3 point lead with less than one minute to play. Then, once again, Wells鈥 full-court press proved to be the winning strategy, as it prevented BCIS from crossing mid-court for most of the final minute of the game.

Wells鈥 Girls Basketball Program also performed admirably, reaching the championship games in both the Under 13s and Under 15s divisions. However, fatigue took its toll in both cases with the Lady Seahawks settling for two 2nd Place finishes.

The Under 11s team also played this week, winning its first 3 games, but falling in its final 3 games, including the semi-final and consolation final games to finish in 4th Place. And the Under 13 Boys played on Wednesday, falling to both the eventual champions from KIS and the tournament runner-up from BCIS.

The fall basketball season concludes with league championship games versus group winners in each division. Wells teams won their groups for the Under 13 Boys, Under 15 Boys, Under 15 Girls, and Senior Boys. Wells Senior Girls team had already clinched the single-group league championship two weeks ago.

A busy two weeks of Seahawk Sports began with the Senior Girls continuing to have their way with fellow TISAC rivals, followed by the debut of two of last year鈥檚 defending TISAC champions: the U15 Girls and U15 Boys teams.

On Wednesday, September 29, the Senior Girls welcomed the Lady Lions from Bangkok Christian International School (BCIS) for Wells鈥 first home game of the year. The game started out as a defensive battle with neither team able to capitalize on the other鈥檚 turnovers. However, as the game progressed, the Lady Seahawks were able to pull away and eventually rout their visitors, 25-9.

The debuts of both defending championship teams took place at TISAC-rival Bangkok Prep on Thursday afternoon, September 30. Despite the expected hostile environment both teams were able to walk away with blowout wins.

Action continued for both U15 teams as the boys and girls traveled to Khao Yai for the St. Stephen鈥檚 Khao Yai Basketball Invitational from Friday, October 1, through Sunday, October 3. Facing several 鈥渂ig name鈥 BISAC schools, our boys captured the tournament championship by going 5-1 overall, with a thrilling 24-22 overtime victory of the Harrow Lions in the final game. Our girls also were relatively successful, placing 3rd, with losses only to BISAC powerhouses TCIS and Shrewsbury.

TISAC play continued on Wednesday, October 6, with our Senior Boys team blowing out Bangkok Prep 46-20 to remain undefeated at 3-0. The blowouts continued with strong wins for our Senior Girls team versus Keerapat, 42-22, and our Under 13 Boys team blowing out St. Andrew鈥檚 35-9. The lone loss for this period was from our Under 13 Girls team, which lost a hard-fought defensive game to St. Andrew鈥檚, 18-12.

The upcoming week will be dominated by volleyball games, with the JV Boys Volleyball Team taking on NIST in their first home game in the new Wells Colosseum. NIST visits the campus hoping to avenge an earlier loss to Wells on the Falcon鈥檚 home court. The boys continue play on Thursday when they travel to Ruamrudee in Minburi. The JV Girls Volleyball Team will also see some action on Tuesday against ASB in Bangna. In basketball, both the U13 Boys and U13 Girls will be traveling to Bangkok Prep on Thursday.

GO SEAHAWKS!!!

Under 15 teams pick up a pair of victories over ASB

On Nut 鈥 The Under 15 Girls Team remain unstoppable as they pick up their third win in as many tries, soundly defeating the Lady Eagles of American School Bangkok 鈥 Sukhumvit Campus (ASB) 49-7. This time, however, ASB seemed to enter the game on a much more level playing field with the Lady Seahawks, compared to previous opponents Charter International School and Bangkok Christian International School. Nonetheless, as the Wells signature defense continues to baffle opponents, its offense continues to improve in leaps and bounds.

While keeping ASB scoreless for nearly the entire first half, Wells amassed 28 points 鈥 mostly from fast-break opportunities due to a very successful swarming defense that allowed just 7 points for the entire game. Additionally, shooting was well distributed with three players scoring in double figures (Ruchika 鈥 15 points, Kanny Smith 鈥 14 points, and Marin Takahashi 鈥 12 points).

The second game of the doubleheader was arguably the most exciting game of the season so far. Despite an obvious height disadvantage, the Wells Under 15 Boys team took part in a clinic of precision passing, quick defensive hands, and well-distributed shot selection.

Leading by only two, 8-6, at the end of the first quarter, the Seahawks really began to click in the second quarter. Behind a series of steals leading to easy layups by Kevin (gr. 8), and a pair of three-pointers by forward Harjas Anandsongvit (gr. 9), the Seahawks built a 25-15 lead by halftime. This lead proved to be enough as the Hawks matched the visiting team point-for-point as it tried, to no avail, to claw back into the game. However, when the dust settled, the boys from Wells came out on top, 45-36.

Scoring in double figures for the boys were Jim (gr. 9) with 16 points, Kevin with 11 points, and Harjas with 10 points.

The TISAC schedule continues in two weeks as the U15 teams take on Bangkok Prep on October 14. GO SEAHAWKS!

Under 13 and 15 Girls teams garner wins vs BCIS, 23-2 and 32-15

On Nut 鈥 The Lady Seahawks continue their winning ways with two more routs against the teams from Bangkok Christian International School (BCIS) Tuesday afternoon. Following in the footsteps of their senior counterparts, Wells鈥 youngest all-girls team dominated from start to finish in the first game of the double header, led by point guard Kanny鈥檚 12 points. Wells nearly blanked BCIS in a game marred by fouls due to Wells鈥 sometimes overly aggressive defense. After the dust settled, the Under 13 Girls team ran away with a 23-2 victory.

The second game of the doubleheader, at first, seemed show promise as the first real challenge as Wells led by just 4 points after the first quarter. However, by the end of the game, it was more of the same as the Under聽 15 Girls team easily beat BCIS 32-15.

On the boys’ end, it was a completely different story. Despite a bit of controversy regarding player eligibility, two games were played at BCIS with both Wells boys teams being soundly defeated. Better luck next time!

Sophomore Gunita Anandsongvit leads all scorers in 29-4 rout!

On Nut 鈥 The 扣扣传媒 Lady Seahawks started off their 2009 campaign with a bang, demolishing the visiting Lions from Bangkok Christian International School (BCIS) by a score of 29-4. Despite a slow start, Wells鈥 suffocating defense held BCIS scoreless for more than three quarters 鈥 the Lions first points coming midway through the final quarter, when the game was already far beyond their reach. Sophomore Gunita Anandsongvit was the steadiest performer, scoring in each quarter to amass a game-high 9 points, followed by Seniors Amp with 8 points and Kieren Yeh with 5 points.

In other games of the day, the Under 11s team was unable to use height to its advantage as the shorter, but much quicker, Lions took control of the game early and beat the young Seahawks 30-12. And in the later game held at BCIS, the Wells Senior Boys found out why the Lions are the defending TISAC Champions. Despite a strong effort by point guards Boss (gr 10) and 聽Jim (9), the Seahawks succumbed to their experienced opponents 50-19.

Today, the first week of the season continues with the Under 13 and Under 15 Boys heading to BCIS, while the Under 13 and Under 15 Girls play at home. Games at both sites begin at 3:00pm.
