On Sunday, October 8, 24 of the Wells MUN Club members traveled to Bangkok Patana School for Bangkok’s largest local MUN Conference, BKKMUN. The 25th session of the Bangkok MUN Conference, while being a milestone in itself, it was also a milestone for our school. With over 400 participants, Bangkok MUN was the largest MUN conference ever attended by our students. Delegates from WIS debated on issues ranging from economic disparities to the Rohingya refugee crisis, addressing the current challenges the UN faces. We were also very proud to have four chairs among our delegation, who skillfully facilitated debate in the various committees of the conference. With many of our delegates coming from the lower ranks of high school for this conference, the WISMUN Club seems to have a bright future and will continue to have a strong presence at the annual BKKMUN Conference!

Ekamai 鈥 For the second time this month, the Wells girls volleyball program challenged the bigger schools of BISAC, facing Ruamrudee, Harrow, and host EIS at the 2012 Ekamai International School Varsity Girls Volleyball Invitational Tournament on Sunday. Coming off a gold medal performance by the junior varsity team just two weeks prior, a very young varsity team nearly accomplished the improbable. The Lady Seahawks powered their way through pool play, defeating Ekamai Varsity 2-0 (25-12, 25-23), Ekamai JV 2-1 (25-23, 17-25, 15-12), and Ruamrudee 2-0 (25-23, 25-23), but dropping a match against Harrow 0-2 (20-25, 16-25). Nonetheless, based on winning records and head-to-head tiebreakers, Wells ended up at the top after pool play, earning them a spot in the championship match against pool-play runner-up Ruamrudee.

In the championship game, however, the Seahawks鈥 youth and inexperience became apparent as the confident and experienced Phoenix from Ruamrudee took advantage of nervous miscues and free balls to win in straight sets, 2-0 (25-19, 25-22), giving RIS the gold and leaving Wells with the silver.

With the Lady Seahawk varsity team made up largely of members of the under 15 and junior varsity teams, the future is certainly looking bright for Wells鈥 volleyball program. A member of TISAC, the Seahawks have been competing regularly with the larger schools outside of the conference, as no other team in TISAC currently has a formal volleyball program. The school hopes to change this as it plans to host, on a trial basis, the first TISAC volleyball tournament later in the school year.

Go Seahawks!

Bang Na 鈥 The Seahawk Volleyball Program took a giant leap forward in earning the respect of Bangkok鈥檚 premiere international school athletic programs, garnering a rare championship sweep at the 2012 Bangkok Patana U17 Volleyball Invitational this weekend. Both the boys and girls teams brought home the gold, despite representing the smallest school in a tournament field that included some of the top schools in Bangkok, including host school Bangkok Patana, 扣扣传媒, Ruamrudee International School, International Community School, NIST, and the American School of Bangkok.

In the boys tourney, Wells had an early start, facing NIST in their first match. Starting out strong, the Seahawks were able to withstand several Falcon surges to win in straight sets, 2-0 (25-22, 25-18). The Seahawks were able to carry their intensity through to the second match, soundly defeating the Phoenix from Ruamrudee, 2-0 (25-16, 25-16), and securing a berth in the play-offs.

In the semi-finals, the boys faced their toughest challenge to that point, facing the Panthers of ISB. After a series of lead changes in game 1, the game was tied at 23-23 before Wells was able to pull away to win by two, 25-23. With that close game serving as a wake-up call, the Seahawks roared back to life, taking game two 25-13, and earning a spot in the championship game against NIST who defeated ICS, 2-0, in the other semi-final match up.

Having already defeated NIST in pool play, Wells had the confidence needed to build an insurmountable lead early in game 1 of the championship match, leading to a lopsided 25-10 win for the Seahawks. However, the Falcons refused to give up, putting up a fight in game two to make it a bit closer. Nonetheless, the hunger for their first championship was much too strong as the Seahawks held on for a 25-21 win, earning gold for the school鈥檚 volleyball program for the first time in its short history.

Not to be upstaged by the boys, the Lady Seahawks were also able to make it to the play-offs with a big win over Bangkok Patana, 2-0 (25-12, 25-8), and a split-set win over NIST, 2-1 (25-18, 21-25, 17-15).

However, the girls had a much tougher road ahead of them. In the semi-finals, Wells found itself backed against the wall as the Lady Panthers of ISB took charge of the match at the onset, winning game 1 easily 25-18. However, the Lady Seahawks refused to submit, dominating the second game 25-11 and moving on the finals with a win in the tie-breaker, 15-12.

As in the semi-final match, Wells put themselves in a hole in the finals, dropping game 1 to NIST, 22-25, and falling behind early in game 2. However, with the sideline urging them on, the girls stormed back to steal game two, 25-22. With everything on the line, both teams traded points with the lead see-sawing back and forth for most of the game. However, a late run of strong serving allowed the Seahawks to prevail, giving Wells a sweep of the tourney championships.

A member of TISAC, Wells Seahawks has been competing regularly with the larger schools as no other team in the conference currently has a formal volleyball program. The school hopes to change this as it plans to host, on a trial basis, the first TISAC volleyball tournament later in the school year. More photos of the tournament can be viewed on our .

On Nut 鈥 Seahawk volleyball teams opened up the 2011-2012 sports season undefeated with wins over traditional BISAC powerhouses Bangkok Patana, NIST and Thai-Chinese International School.

On Wednesday, August 31, both the U17 Boys and U17 Girls teams were in action against the Tigers of BPS. Playing on their home court, the Lady Seahawks were at first noticeably intimidated by the much taller visiting team. However, it didn鈥檛 take long for them to realize that the teams were much more evenly matched than they had initially thought. Behind the steady setting of Kanny Smith (Class of 2014) and Pleng (Class of 2016), and with the consistent all-around play of Marin Takahashi (Class of 2014), the girls conquered the visiting Lady Tigers, 3-1.

While the girls took care of business at home, the boys team travelled to BPS in Bangna for their first match of the season. With a returning team virtually intact after last year鈥檚 charter season, the Seahawks proved they deserved to play with the 鈥渂ig boys鈥, powering their way through games 1 and 2 behind the surprisingly consistent jump serves of Joon Young Lee (Class of 2013), power spikes of Kevin Han (Class of 2014) and monster blocks of Matthew Seo (Class of 2015). After a minor letdown in game 3, the team regrouped to cruise to a win in game 4 to win the match 3-1.

For their second match in as many weeks, the U17 Boys team stayed home to take on the Falcons of New International School Thailand (NIST). Despite playing on their home court for the first time this year, there was no sign of nervousness as the Seahawks jumped to quick leads in the first two games and cruised to a 2-0 lead. However, like their previous match, the team experienced a letdown through most of game 3. However, toward the end of that game, the team shook it off to force a deuce situation at 24-24. Despite eventually losing game 3 by a score of 24-26, the momentum had shifted to Wells鈥 side leading to an easy win in game 4, sealing the match for the Seahawks, 3-1.

The U17 Boys continued their streak by taking a break from their age bracket to test themselves against a higher age bracket when they visited Thai Chinese International School (TCIS) to take on their U19 Boys team on Monday, September 12. The age difference seemed to have intimidated the younger Seahawks as they dropped the first game 22-25. However, after a few 鈥渟trong鈥 words of encouragement from the coaching staff, the boys regained their confidence, ultimately blowing away the Wolves in three straight games, 25-11, 25-22, and 25-11, for a final 3-1 win. The victory pushed Wells鈥 record to 3-0 for the season.

Next up for the U17 Boys will be the EIS Varsity Boys Volleyball Invitational on Sunday, September 25.
