Seahawks win back-to-back-to-back championships at both ISB invitational and AISAA league tournaments

It鈥檚 been three years since the host Panthers from the 扣扣传媒 (ISB) has won its own tournament, beating Wells in 2016 in the Seahawk鈥檚 debut in the championship match. Since then, Wells has reached AND won the championship match each year, against two different international schools from Singapore 鈥 United World College East (UWCE) in 2017 and Stamford American International School (SAIS) in 2018.

However, after ISB went undefeated in their pool, and earned a spot in the finals after a win against Bangkok Pattana School (BPS) in the semi-finals, urged on by a boisterous crowd screaming, 鈥淭his is OUR house!鈥 — the hungry Panthers were poised to reclaim the throne.

But our Seahawks would have NO SUCH THING!

With just one senior, the young Seahawks showed the mental maturity and emotional fortitude to stave off stiff challenges in pool play, beating ICS Bangkok, 2-0 (25-20, 25-10); SAIS, 2-1 (25-13, 24-26, 17-15); and BPS, 2-1 (23-25, 25-18, 15-11). They then survived a tough semi-final match-up against another Singapore school, United World College Dover (UWCD), beating them 2-1 (18-25, 25-23, 15-13).

In the end, Wells had just a bit more energy, a bit more depth on the bench, and a bit more heart to outlast ISB, winning 2-0 (26-24, 27-25) in two nail-biting, overtime sets, to complete the 鈥渢hree-peat鈥 championship run.

The Seahawks were led by tri-captains Insee Akarapan (c/o 2020), Corey Beer (c/o 2021), and Perth Vichitchoti (c/o 2021). Other members of the squad include Pat Pinsrisirirath, Kohyo Miyajima, Ronnie Kwok, Justin Omland, and Phurin Kosumapinun (c/o 2021); and MJ Caunan, Jr., Kendrick Acda, Herb Udompholvanich, Gabriel Xumsai Na Ayudhaya, Shiva Chandnani, and Time Phatigulsate (c/o 2022). Head Coach – Ray de la Pena and Asst. Coach – Rhyll Catangcatang.

AISAA Champions

In the second tournament, held all day Sunday, a condensed version of the varsity boys squad took on other AISAA teams, as well as a few visiting teams. Pool play turned out to be a cakewalk as Wells easily beat Berkeley International School, 2-0 (25-22, 25-12); King Mongkut International Demonstration School (KMIDS), 2-0 (25-9, 25-10); KIS, 2-0 (25-16, 25-23); and the International School of the Eastern Seaboard (ISE), 2-0 (25-17, 25-14). In the knock-out matches, Wells beat Ekamai International School (EIS), 2-0 (25-12, 25-14) and, finally, KIS, 2-0 (25-14, 25-9) to repeat as champions. Wells also won the AISAA Tournament championships in 2017 and 2018.

Lady Seahawks also in action over weekend

Also, playing in the tournaments were the Wells varsity girls who played hard and showed much improvement since the beginning of the season. In pool play of the ISB tournament, the Lady Seahawks won two matches; first to ICS Bangkok, 2-1; then International School of Ho Chi Minh City (ISHCMC) from Vietnam. The girls ended the tournament in 4th place.

At the AISAA tournament, the girls went 3-1 in pool play, but fell in the semi-finals to Concordian. The girls ended in 3rd place.

Both teams now have over a month to prepare for their final tournaments of the season against member schools of the ASEAN Schools Athletic Conference (ASAC), coming up at the beginning in November.

In yet another role as David, Wells varsity boys volleyball team faced another Goliath international schools, and, for the second year in a row, our Seahawks came out victorious, going undefeated after beating Stamford American International School (SAIS) from Singapore in the championship match of the 扣扣传媒 (ISB) Panther Invitational Volleyball Tournament held this past weekend.

The tournament, which ran over two days, featured international schools from Thailand and other Southeast Asia countries including Singapore and Vietnam.

On Friday, pool play began with wins against International Community School Bangkok, 2-0 (25-22, 25-15) and United World College Dover from Singapore, 2-0 (25-10, 25-18). The winning streak continued on Saturday against Saigon South International School from Vietnam, 2-0 (25-22, 25-12) putting us in 1st place in Pool A.

For the semi-finals, our boys faced host ISB, who placed 2nd in Pool B, winning 2-0 (25-21, 25-22), including a dramatic come-from-behind win in set 2.

Finally, the championship match turned out to be the most challenging with both Wells and SAIS going undefeated through their respective semi-final matches. However, after splitting the first two sets, the Seahawks proved too much for the Lions, cruising to a win in the tie-breaker for the championship trophy, 2-1 (25-21, 18-25, 15-5).

In the second tournament, held all day Sunday, a condensed version of the varsity boys squad took on other AISAA league teams, as well as visiting teams from Chonburi and Cambodia. Pool play turned out to be a cakewalk as Wells easily beat AISAA teams from Berkeley International School, 2-0 (25-10, 25-9) and Mahidol University International Demonstration School (MUIDS), 2-0 (25-5, 25-5), followed by a win against the International School of the Eastern Seaboard (ISE), 2-0 (25-23, 25-7). In the knock-out matches, Wells beat Logos International School from Cambodia, 2-0 (25-8, 25-15) and, finally, Ekamai International School, 2-0 (25-7, 25-19) to repeat as champions.

Also, playing in the tournaments were the Wells varsity girls who played hard, winning two matches, both against International School Ho Chi Minh City (ISHCMC), to place 7th at the ISB tournament. At the AISAA tournament, the girls went undefeated in pool play, but fell in the semi-finals to the eventual champions from Logos International School. The girls ended in 3rd place with a win against East-West International School from Cambodia.

Both teams continue the season with two more major tournaments, one in Malaysia and one in Vietnam, coming up through November.

The varsity volleyball season came to a close this past week with Wells teams ending on a very positive note with both girls and boys winning their respective AISAA varsity volleyball championship tournaments.

VARSITY GIRLS WIN AISAA VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP

In the inaugural girls volleyball tournament of the Asia Interscholastic Athletic Association (AISAA), the Wells varsity girls volleyball team came up on top in a field of seven schools, bringing home the school鈥檚 first girls championship trophy of the year.

In pool play, Wells came out strong, cruising to victories over fellow AISAA members Berkeley, 2-0 (25-7, 25-9), and Mahidol, 2-0 (25-8, 25-8). Their toughest competition in their pool was visiting Logos International School from Cambodia, also winning in straight sets, 2-0 (25-10, 27-25).

Entering the play-offs with momentum and confidence on their side, our Lady Seahawks stormed through the brackets, beating AISAA members Ekamai in the quarter-final match, 2-0 (25-13, 25-15) and Concordian in the semi-final match, 2-0 (25-14, 25-19).

In the championship game, Wells faced another team from Cambodia, East West International School (EWIC). Though clearly deserving to be in the finals, EWIC couldn鈥檛 match the confidence and consistent play of our girls as Wells won in straight sets, 2-0 (25-20, 25-22).

VARSITY BOYS WIN FINAL TOURNAMENT OF VOLLEYBALL SEASON

Wells varsity boys team capped off the most successful season in the program鈥檚 7-year history with its fourth championship trophy, winning the inaugural AISAA Boys Varsity Volleyball Tournament on Thursday, October 19. With the wins, the Seahawks ended the season with a 26-1 record, with a single loss coming against an adult team at the ISKL Twin Towers Invitational in Malaysia.

The eight-team tournament was also the largest tournament ever hosted by Wells with five AISAA teams and three visiting teams from around the region.

In pool play, Wells came out strong, with victories over visiting Logos International School (Cambodia), 2-0 (25-9, 25-10), followed by straight-set wins against fellow AISAA members Mahidol University International College, 2-0 (25-12, 15-10), and Ekamai International School, 2-0 (25-17, 25-7).

As the winner of the pool, our boys earned a spot in the semi-finals of the championship bracket, facing the Eagles, an up-and-coming program from Bangkok Advent School. Despite a strong, scrappy defense, the eagles were no match for Wells power offense as the Seahawks prevailed, 2-0 (25-16, 25-7).

In the championship game, Wells had a chance to reassert its dominance with a rematch against Ekamai, the third meeting between the two teams in a little over a week. Despite the long day, the outcome was no different with Wells winning the championship, 2-0 (25-15, 25-11).

Other schools participating in the tournament included fellow AISAA schools Concordian International School and Berkeley International School (Bangkok, Thailand), as well as another visiting school, International School Eastern Seaboard, Pattaya, Chonburi (ISE) from Chonburi.

Along with volleyball matches, the tournament allowed us to recognize two of our programs graduating seniors who played their final games with the team: Matter Kwanlertchit and Ping Ping Praepant (Ping Ping Liu).

Also representing Wells were Juniors, Sean Ogden, Finn Dardarananda, Ryosuke Toda, Yuta Nishio, Jira Trinetkamol, and Sunand Sethi; Sophomores, Possawat Akarapan and Pew Apithanangsiri; Freshman, Perth Vichitchoti; and coach, Ray de la Pena.
