Teaching a Robot New Tricks

As a provocation for the unit, “Where We Are in Place and Time”, Grade 5 did not expect the surprise waiting for them in the classroom on Monday, August 17th, 2020. The students sat down to find the accouterments for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich displayed at the front of the room. Mr. Russell moved robotically around the room. Then, he introduced himself as the latest and greatest in robotic technology.

The challenge presented was for the students to take an everyday task then break it down into instructions for the robot to execute. Hilarity ensued when, while following the instructions given for drinking a glass of water, the robot simply put the whole glass into its mouth. The instruction read simply, “put the glass into your mouth”, while the following instruction read “drink the water.”

This activity illustrated that the majority of our communication is implied, and why the words we choose are important. One person instructs another person to put something “on that shelf over there” when knowing that said shelf is actually a bookcase. The same is not true for a computer or robot, which only does exactly what it is told. It cannot understand what one meant to tell it. Students quickly understood the activity, then began to refine their instructions.

Eventually, an algorithm, or ready made solution to a problem, was designed. This allowed the students to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Each student robot completed their sandwich making task successfully. Thankfully, enjoying the sandwiches themselves wasn’t bound by any robotic instructions.

The central idea of this unit is language has been used throughout history to record experiences. In this activity, the students explored how we express ourselves implicitly without thinking about the meaning of the words.

Dear Wells Teachers,

Whether you are a teacher, assistant teacher, office staff, general affairs staff we are all part of a very important job of educating and giving our students the vital knowledge to live and be successful.

As adults, we ALL need appreciation for what we do, so I want to assure you that here at Wells all of you are APPRECIATED for all that you do like the  extra things; those extra hours you work to ensure learning and to help our students to be successful.

Thank you so much for all the hard work and energy you put into your job. When visitors walk through our hallways, they see children learning, working, smiling and laughing. Test scores have now become a way of life in the world of education, but it’s vital that we not lose the wonderful moments and memories that happen each and every day. Those memories are because of you and your dedication.

My greatest appreciation this year has been working with a staff of teachers that is committed to unity. I am continuously impressed with the amount of time and energy the staff at Wells puts into making sure all students at Wells are successful! They are an incredibly talented group of teachers who want nothing but the best for our students and families.

Thank you for everything you do each and every day that make Wells such a “Great Place To Grow!”

Next our students honored our teachers. The grade 5 students gave speeches about their teacher, Mr. Russell. After that, our students gave the teachers miniature flower baskets. Our Bang Na Parent Teacher Organization also gave the teachers silicon coffee cups. They know teachers need their coffee!

Our first grade teacher, Ms. Sunee, gave a comical presentation about the roles of a teacher. These roles include, but are not limited to: a fitness trainer, a choreographer, an artist, a mom and dad, an entertainer, a counselor, a designer and an engineer! Teachers truly do wear many hats! Wells Bang Na would like to thank our passionate and dedicated teachers.

The grade 1’s have been studying about “Neighbors” and “Communities” which happens to coincide with our Christmas around the world theme. To end our unit we did a S.T.E.A.M project to show and  guide our students on how to become a global citizen.

Students were broken up into 5 groups which represented different communities and or countries. Their objective was to build the longest chain using only 2 pieces of paper, rulers, scissors, a limited amount of tape, and teamwork.

During the project a lot of different behaviors were exhibited from all groups. We saw groups sharing, helping, stealing, sabotaging, and cheating. Then this became a lesson within a lesson to show students appropriate and not appropriate behaviors in society.

At the end of our lesson some students felt great about how they worked together in their groups. And some thought of ways to do better next time. We then had them think about … what if all communities or countries came together and helped one another build the chain what would happen?

Wells Bang Na K3 Visits Suan Luang

K3A and K3A went on a fun trip to Rama 9 Park. At the park they played on the big playground and house-like structure. They also toured the entire park on a trolley. On the ride they saw how the park was blooming with beautiful flowers and plants that the grounds staff had been working hard preparing for the Father’s Day celebration. They also saw markets selling plants and food,Japanese and Chinese gardens, the lake, and many other sights. After a relaxing lunch on the lawn K3 spent a little more time on the playground before returning to school.

Wells Thong Lo | K2 Cultural Cuisine Celebration

Written by: Ms. Meg – K2C Homeroom Teacher

K2 students spent three exciting weeks learning about “Cultural Awareness.” They explored the languages, flags, holidays, and food of many different countries around the world. Students enjoyed sharing stories and traditions from their own culture with their classmates. The theme culminated in a Cultural Cuisine Celebration! Students brought in food from their country, and we had a delicious banquet. There were food and drinks from many different countries, including China, India, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Wales. It was a wonderful sensory exploration to finish this fascinating theme and celebrate the many cultures that make up our Wells community.
